A message from incoming President Richard Karsten, Class of ’81:
Greetings, Stanner alumni, family, friends, faculty and colleagues. I am pleased to introduce to you the next step in our efforts to best communicate with our extended Stanner family, a new interactive newsletter we’re calling “THE BEEHIVE.” Think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a bi-monthly opportunity to stay in touch with what’s happening in the Molloy community – announcements about upcoming events, a showcasing of the latest programs offered at school, and news about notable achievements by current Molloy students, faculty, and alums in the community at large.
In keeping with our alma mater’s over-arching motto Not for school but for life, let me take this opportunity to reiterate that while the faculty get to guide their students for four years, here at the Alumni Center, we take responsibility for you for the rest of your lives…
In my new capacity as school president, I hear a terrific “Stanner story” every day. Quite simply, Archbishop Molloy High School/St. Ann’s Academy would mean nothing in the community were it not for the example set by our alumni going forward, whether that means a career in service, business, health care, law enforcement, etc. Pick any field – odds are there’s a Stanner excelling in it!
We hope that you’ll think of “THE BEEHIVE” as a two-way communication. We want to hear about your Stanner stories, your notable achievements, birth announcements, impromptu reunion gatherings, and much more. We want to hear about how your Molloy experiences have shaped your view of the world today, how much a part of your daily lives they might be. More than an online newsletter, we hope “THE BEEHIVE” will become a dialogue, a conversation…
Matt Rizzotti ’04 Visits Molloy
Matt Rizzotti ’04, one of baseball’s top prospects currently with a minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies organization, visited Molloy to chat with the Alumni Center staff and numerous faculty members. Matt updated everyone on his stellar season in the minors, where he compiled 144 hits, 17 home runs, 76 Runs batted in and a .343 batting average across three levels of competition. Matt visited coach Jack Curran on Molloy’s baseball field to help provide instruction during team practice. Matt is looking forward to an intense workout schedule in the offseason to sharpen his skills even further and perhaps get that all important call to the big show, Major League Baseball.
Around the School
September 7, 2010 marked the beginning of another ambitious academic year at Archbishop Molloy High School. The freshman class was the first to get acquainted as they stored their books in their lockers for the first time…after some trouble with their combinations of course. In the following days the sophomores began their time as “wise fools,” the juniors looked forward to their most challenging academic year to date, and the seniors took on their roles as mentors for all the underclassmen. The road to success is never easy, but it is important for our seniors to step forward as leaders and provide an example that can make the road more inviting.
Elsewhere, Br. James Vagan has been busy running the school bookstore. The line for books, clothing, and supplies almost runs out to Manton Street early in the year, but Br. James is unwavering as he mans his post. Our faculty, administration and student volunteers did a wonderful job organizing textbook distribution, homeroom assignments and athletic tryouts during the first weeks of the school year. It takes a lot of preparation to run the show, and it’s important to recognize all the hard work that goes into making sure our students have the best chance to succeed this
year and beyond. Thank you to everyone that helped kick off the school year with a bang.
Sports Updates
Athletic Director Mike McCleary has been coordinating the upcoming athletic year. Molloy has over 30 teams encompassing 13 different sports, all of which are very competitive and have many talented men and women participating throughout the school year. Teams have been in operation since late August as initial tryouts were held, formal practices and seasons have begun, and hopes are high for every team. In the upcoming season the girls’ varsity and junior varsity soccer teams will be defending division titles while the boys’ varsity soccer team will be defending their city championship.
Speaking of the defending city champion boys’ varsity soccer team, they have begun their season with a respectable 3-3 record, while the boys’ junior varsity soccer team is still undefeated at 3-0. The girls’ varsity soccer team began at 3-1 while junior varsity earned a 2-0-1 opening record. As mentioned earlier, both are defending NSCHSAA “A” Champions. Elsewhere the varsity volleyball team is 2-1. The above right photo of the varsity team was featured in the Forest Hills Times as the “Angle of the Week.” The junior varsity team started off at 3-0. The girls’ tennis team got off to a great start at 1-0 while the varsity baseball team earned a great 3-1 start. Junior varsity baseball tryouts are still being held. In Cross Country Running, junior Kathleen Woods ’12 set a new School Record with a time of 15.56.9. Congratulations, Kathleen. Good luck to all of Molloy’s athletes and coaches!
Faculty Updates
Coach Jack Curran’s Birthday
Legendary Molloy baseball and basketball Coach Jack Curran celebrated his 80th birthday on September 6, 2010. Numerous alumni, faculty and friends including Kevin Joyce ’69, Joe Smith, Rich Rodgers ’65 and Molloy Athletic Director Mike McCleary gathered at a local restaurant to reminisce and treat coach to a good time in honor of the milestone occasion. Jack, a Stanner Hall of Famer, has been coaching at Archbishop Molloy for over 50 years and is the winningest coach in New York State history. He has been an inspiration for his entire life and has led the way in shaping Stanners into successful athletes and individuals. Thank you, Coach, for all your hard work and dedication to the future of our students. Happy Birthday!
Mr. Lipset Retires
The 2009-2010 school campaign marked the end of over 40 years of teaching at Archbishop Molloy for Mr. Mark Lipset. During his tenure, which spans roughly 75% of the history of Molloy, Mr. Lipset taught Biology, Chemistry, Chemistry Honors, and Health. He resided as the Health Education Coordinator and led after school activities as the Intramurals Director and part of the Referees Association. He was also a big contributor to The Stanner and to the production of the Blue and White yearbook. Although he has ended his time at Molloy, he continues to teach part time at Nassau Community College. According to John Diorio, Mark Lipset “is a great teacher, has one of the driest senses of humor around, and is an extremely talented artist as well. He taught at Molloy for over 40 years and always worked extremely hard.” Thank you, Mr. Lipset, for your legendary service to Molloy.
Alumni Team Up
Over the summer Frank Gambino ’74 and Hall of Fame Stanner Ray Mascolo ’73 teamed up to make a music video for America’s Homeless Vets. Ray has been working to help the homeless veterans on Long Island. Frank provided his musical talents in creating the song and lyrics. The music video can be found on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yohs6viGXb8. To help this cause or for more information please contact Dr. Ray Mascolo at: CPTmasc14@aol.com
Molloy students learn early on that there is no room for a lazy attitude. Upon graduation Stanners are prepared and motivated, ready for the next step in their young academic careers. In the case of Dorina Lleshi ’08, it has been quite a natural transition. Dorina recently visited the Alumni Center and shared stories about her recent independent study in Ghana. Currently attending Cooper Union, Dorina was inspired by her professor, Mr. Toby Cumberbutch, to travel to Jirapa, Ghana for 8 weeks for an “energy audit.” Dorina recorded data on the current use of fire wood for energy. Knowing current trends in the usage of fire wood helps to determine how much energy could be available in the future in Jirapa, located in northern Ghana. In groups of two she traveled the city talking to families and getting direct testimonials. Dorina studied specific energy usage in rainy and dry seasons as well because they are one of the most important variables that affect her group’s research. Dorina also reminisced about the World Cup tournament as Ghana defeated the United States while she was there. She described it as quite a big nparty. Dorina credits Mr. Sheehan as her biggest inspiration at Molloy, saying “he told me to go out and sit in the uncomfortable” as a way to experience the real world at large. She also mentioned Ms. Mary Pat Gannon, and Mr. Chris DeSarno as examples that hard work does pay off. Dorina also recognized Br. Regis, who she described as “the ears” for her words, while he himself offered “words of wisdom.” Dorina is pursuing a major in chemical engineering and a bio-medical engineering minor. She hopes to a bio-engineering Masters; that is if she doesn’t go to med school.
Archbishop Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81 recently bumped into former W.O.Y.C. dock master Jack Nolty ’48 at an Oakdale community kid’s fishing contest. Jack shared stories with Ryan Karsten ’13 about Esopus and playing ice hockey with Br. Aquinas on the frozen pond. Jack reminisced about summers at Esopus where Br. Linus made him responsible for “puttying” the hundreds of window panes in the mansion. Jack was excited about an upcoming trip with his son-in-law to Green Bay for a football game.
Mike Baxter ’02 made his Major League Baseball debut on September 7th, 2010 for the San Diego Padres against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made a pop up out to the second baseman in his first at bat, which was a pinch hitting appearance in the 4th inning. In 2010, Mike compiled 145 hits, 18 home runs, 72 runs batted in, and a .301 batting average for San Diego’s minor league affiliate, AAA Portland. He was officially placed on the San Diego Padres 25 man roster on September 8th. Mike became part of a select group of Stanners to break into the Major Leagues, including former pitcher Xavier “Mr. X” Rescigno ’30.
Edward Braunstein ’99 recently won the nomination to run for the District 26 seat in Queens, currently owned by Ann Carrozza. Ed, a newcomer to the political game, received 37 percent of the vote. The 26th District includes Bayside, Little Neck, Douglaston, Bay Terrace, Whitestone, and East Flushing. Congratulations to Ed, and good luck in the race for the seat.
Michael G. Miller ’79 won the primary for the 38th Assembly District. Mike received 77 percent of the vote as he defeated Nick Comaianni in a landslide. The 38th Assembly District represents sections of southwestern Queens. Congratulations to Mike.
