The evening will feature a guest speaker, hors d’oeuvres and other refreshments, and networking opportunities with other Stanners. Our speaker is Michael Manley, a Venable partner with an impressive business resume as well as experience as an in-house lawyer and outside counsel. He basically became my guidance counselor and helped me deal with the things all teenagers deal with,” said Steve. After graduating from Molloy, Steve remained friends with Br. Pat. “I continued to ask him questions, seek his opinion, and let him know how much I appreciated him being there for me. You could say I picked his brain my entire life. He was always amenable. To have someone like that in your life is a very special thing, and I think that is the kind of influence he had on many, many people.”

The goals of the Brother Patrick Hogan Fund are:

Grant a four-year scholarship of $2,000 per year to one student in the incoming Freshman class. As the fund grows, it is our hope to see increased amounts awarded to deserving students. Qualifications for the scholarship include financial need, strong academic standing, and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Award a $1,000 grant will be awarded annually to a junior/senior or alumnus/na who has previously participated in service programs to remain connected and involved with future opportunities with the Saint Marcellin Champagnat Service Society.

Mr. & Mrs. Matteini have also announced a special gift match challenge in support of the Brother Patrick Hogan Fund. Gifts made to the fund through August 31st will be matched dollar for dollar by Mr. & Mrs. Matteini, meaning your gift of $1 becomes $2. Your gift of $25 becomes $50. Your gift of $250 becomes $500. The Matteini family will match up to $100,000! This class has accomplished truly remarkable things together, but perhaps none are more memorable than the over $89 million in college scholarships they were awarded. “Our students are enjoying the benefits of a more strategic focus on college prep,” said President Richard Karsten ’81. “We’ve increased personal outreach at the admissions and administrative level, we’ve met directly with school leadership, we’ve established strong alumni connections, and we’ve brought our kids to campuses all over the northeast. We’ve also brought college representatives and early admission days here to Molloy. For me, Molloy offered the promise of a new start…but I began high school shy and quiet. Later, I became involved with Esopus, and by leading groups there I became more confident. My experiences – our experiences – allowed us to open up.” Justin later stated the importance of being uncomfortable sometimes. “It’s how we develop and grow. This [being uncomfortable] is probably the most significant phase in a cycle that has been present in every major advancement in our lives. At each stage we leave familiar surroundings…but though the future may be scary, we can rest assured that we will be able to handle it because of the strong base Molloy has given each of us.”

Valedictorian Ewa Gerlak ’15 also addressed the crowd during the commencement ceremony. “Looking back, we can’t give all the credit to textbooks. Who we have become results from our teachers, family, friends, and our own conscious choices. Our teachers are a rare kind. They taught us with such fervor and dedication – as if they think we are the answer to the world’s problems. They have always supported us, and never criticized us for far-fetched ideas and opinions.” She continued, “As we start the next phase of our lives, we must remember to maintain perspective. We shouldn’t worry about the small things. If we stress over meaningless things, our lives will not be centered around what truly matters: doing what we love…We are future doctors, engineers, authors, teachers, counselors, athletes, and politicians.
