Open House is the perfect opportunity for elementary school students and their families to visit Molloy, tour our six acre campus, and learn about the Catholic Marist tradition of excellence that began in 1892. Guests will have the opportunity to meet students, administrators, teachers and coaches, receive information about Molloy’s competitive curriculum, enjoy musical and dance performances by talented Stanner club and band members, and see why Molloy has built a strong reputation as a top-tier learning environment.

ALUMNI! If you are planning to visit this Sunday’s Open House we encourage you to stop by room 124 and say hello to the staff at the Stanner Alumni Center. A member of the staff will be available to give you a personal tour if requested as well as answer any questions you may have. We will also have all yearbooks handy in case you’d like to experience a blast from the past! Alumni who are scheduled to volunteer during the Open House are also encouraged to stop by room 124 and say hello. It should be a busy day, and we look forward to sharing a portion of it with our alumni.

Any questions about the Open House should be sent to admissions@molloyhs.org.

Alumni, Faculty, Parents Celebrate Molloy Oktoberfest

The Stanner Alumni Center was pleased last Friday to host alumni, faculty, and parents for our third annual Molloy Oktoberfest. A casual evening serving all members of the Stanner community (ages 21+), Oktoberfest treats guests to Bavarian food, music and décor, as well as craft beer and good company. A raffle drawing saw three lucky winners take home some t-shirts and Oktoberfest steins, while those who stayed late caught the first few innings of Mets vs. Dodgers. Special Oktoberfest t-shirts were also donated by Alumni Development Director Craig Katinas ’93, who could not attend the event due to his participation in the Chicago Marathon (see alumni updates). John is the President of Mangan Group Architects, a full-service architectural firm based in Takoma Park, Maryland. The firm specializes in remodels, additions, custom new construction, and small commercial projects. “There are certain popular majors that many students study in college, but architectural design is not often at the top of the list,” said John. “Part of the reason I wanted to speak to students at Molloy is to encourage them to think about this line of work, because we really do need more architects.” (Pictured L-R: John Mangan ’82, Admissions Director Leslie Poole-Petit, President Richard Karsten ’81, and art teacher Glen DaGrossa)

John discussed the logistical side of the business as well as the creative side. “Building size, zoning regulations, basic structural support, and emergency exits are all part of the planning phase,” explained John, who displayed examples of Computer Aided Design (CAD) modeling to show how concepts are created for and pitched to clients. During a Q&A session, John shared that young people shouldn’t be intimidated by the math and calculus often associated with architectural design. “There are many different specialized jobs within the industry. Think of it as a way to broaden your mind and think in the abstract.” John also stressed the importance of applying for internships as a way to get one’s foot in the door. John had one more treat in store for students: an Oculus Rift kit. The “Rift” is a virtual reality display that fits on a user’s head. The School of Choral Studies is administered by the New York State Education Department. Seventy students with exceptional vocal talent were selected, last school year, through a rigorous statewide audition process. They gathered in Fredonia, New York for the four-week program during July 2015. David and the other students spent at least eight hours daily in choral rehearsals, classes, and performances. The program was designed to provide intense choral singing experience covering a wide variety of music literature. The aim of this State program is to increase musical sensitivity and vocal production. Students were also coached according to individual needs in voice development.

This summer’s chorus was under the direction of Dr. Hugh Ferguson Floyd and a staff of outstanding artist/teachers. The chorus performed two major concerts and participated in ensemble presentations as well as solo recitals. I may have not hit the time I wanted, but I had the best time running it,” said Craig. Aside from the marathon festivities, Craig also caught up with one of his classmates living in Chicago. “It was wonderful to catch up with Alan Grgurovic ’93 and his wife Sara to hear about all the wonderful things they’re involved with. It really goes to show Molloy does create good citizens making a difference in their communities.” Overall the trip to Chicago was a blessing. “I’m extremely grateful to so many people, but in particular Dan McGrath ’01 and Rob Votruba who are my quasi coaches.” (Pictured above: Craig with Olympian Deena Kastor)

Ben Joson ’10 is motivated – there’s no question about that. The young Stanner, who served as the popular President of Undergraduate Student Government at Hunter College in recent years, has drawn on that experience and since taken on a huge challenge in 2015. Ben is a Global Youth Ambassador for A World at School, an international campaign with headquarters in London, New York, Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Since 2013, A World at School has recruited over 500 Global Youth Ambassadors like Ben with the common goal of ensuring every child’s basic right to go to school. The organization works to accomplish this through sharing stories, engaging governments, championing progress, and bringing people together to spread the word.

“59 million children are still left without a primary school education – even though world leaders promised in 2000 to make sure every child would be able to realize their human right to a basic quality education,” explained Ben. A World at School has seen its recent web and social media campaign #UpForSchool trend to the tune of 10 million supporters. Among them is recording artist Shakira, who joined Ben and other Global Youth Ambassadors as well as Gordon Brown of the United Nations (Special Envoy for Global Education) at an event to release a petition book containing signatures from around the world. “This is the largest education petition in the world, and it represents our voice,” said Ben. “Every additional person who stands up for the 59 million children left without education will help make sure they’re not forgotten.” Congratulations to Ben on working toward this wonderful goal.
