Ron Marcellin Scholarship Dinner to be held on Sunday, January 17th, 2016. This dinner, which is hosted by our friends at community favorite Trinity Bar & Restaurant in Floral Park, pays tribute to the memory of Br. Ron Marcellin, one of the most caring and influential figures in Molloy’s history. Br. Ron’s faith, passion for education and music, and care of each individual student inspired all who knew him. In fact, those who knew him continue to be inspired by him. The Brother Ronald Marcellin committee has hosted this event annually in hopes of raising money to help future Stanners in Br. Ron’s name. Funds raised by this event will directly benefit students in need, giving them the opportunities they need to succeed as the leaders of tomorrow. A 50/50 raffle and live auction will be among the festivities while dinner, beverages, and great company are also included. 50/50 raffle tickets will be available for purchase during the event or in advance by emailing ckatinas@molloyhs.org. Please spread the word to your classmates! We hope to have another full house on January 17th as we celebrate Br. Ron and introduce a whole new generation of Stanners to his wonderful legacy.

Alum’s Artwork Featured in Children’s Book

Joanne Raptis ’11 is a senior at Barnard College. She is pursuing a degree in Psychology with hopes to study clinical psychology in the future. “The work would place me with adults with depression, mood and anxiety disorders,” explained Joanne. In the meantime she is enjoying her time at Barnard. Though she is not as involved with theater and song as she was at Molloy, she does enjoy dancing with a focus on ballet and swing dancing. “It’s just something fun. Ballet and swing contrast nicely. The former is focused inward, while swing is very loose and social.” In addition to dance, Joanne has honed her artistic skills. She was asked to join three classmates to paint a permanent mural in Barnard’s student life building. The theme: celebrating campus life.

After completing the mural, Joanne was approached about an even bigger project – on a smaller canvas. The author of a book series for children stumbled on Joanne’s personal website and was impressed by her art portfolio, particularly the featured cartoon drawings. The author contacted Joanne and the two quickly struck up a working relationship. Joanne was commissioned to create the original artwork for the first of a new seven book series. “I actually work really well with the author. I have plenty of artistic freedom and look forward to her suggestions and feedback,” said Joanne. “In general our styles are well aligned. We have a similar idea of what the book should look like.” The book, titled My Dream For You is Happiness, is a children’s story that features content that is geared toward all audiences. “For example, one page in the book reads ‘my dream for you is happiness’ and shows the different ways happiness can manifest itself. Another idea in the book is you don’t have to be tall, or any certain ethnicity, or be a certain age; everyone can find happiness. The author wants you to read the book to someone you really care about and let them know they can find happiness no matter who they are.” Joanne says work will begin on the second book soon. “It is a challenge to complete the work around my college courses, but I enjoy it.” For more information on the book series you can visit www.mydreamforyou.org or click here for more info on Joanne and her portfolio.
