Ron Marcellin Scholarship Dinner" width="300" height="242" />On January 17th, the Molloy community gathered to honor the legacy of a great man while supporting the scholarship in his name. The Br. Ron Marcellin Scholarship Dinner is an annual fundraising event that raises money to provide students in need the opportunity to attend Molloy. This year’s event was a great success, as alumni, faculty, and friends raised over $50,000. These funds will directly impact tuition costs for two incoming freshmen this fall as well as future students. The newest recipients have experienced extraordinary personal circumstances, but the generosity of our community has helped to lessen that burden while creating an opportunity for both to enjoy the benefits of a Stanner education beginning in fall 2016. More than 20 students have been helped by the Br. Ron Marcellin Memorial Scholarship since it was established over two decades ago.

“What started out with just a few dedicated people many years ago has now grown into an annual community event supported by countless alumni, friends, and family,” said Craig Katinas ’93, Alumni Development Director and longstanding member of the Br. Ron Committee. “We’ve been fortunate in recent years, including 2016, to have past scholarship recipients come and volunteer at the event to help this scholarship grow, in turn helping more deserving students receive the Stanner experience. It has also been amazing to see the overwhelming support in donations for Br. Ron’s scholarship throughout the year on top of what was raised at the event.” (Pictured: Dr. James Lynch ’83 and President Richard Karsten ’81)

The event included a delicious dinner buffet and beverages provided by our generous hosts, Trinity Restaurant & Bar in Floral Park. In this role, James manages and oversees all web content, which includes editorial, photo, video, and social media posts. He landed at FOX Sports after pursuing a range of other opportunities. Facebook and Twitter were still in their relative infancy when he graduated from Hofstra University with a degree in Journalism. His initial goal was to be an NFL beat writer, which led him to internships at Newsday and Jetsinsider.com. He later took advantage of opportunities at the Queens Tribune, NY Daily News (where he worked with Mike Wursthorn ’05), The Daily (a now defunct iPad magazine), and MSN. He learned a great deal from each of these experiences earlier in his career, which prepared him for an even bigger challenge at FOX Sports. “I didn’t end up covering one NFL team in print like I originally wanted to, but now I’m now covering every NFL team on the web, which is great. It’s about adaptability. You never know where life will take you, but you stay prepared for whatever comes up.” (Screen capture courtesy of FOX Sports)

As the lead NFL editor for foxsports.com/nfl, James has made a tangible impact on the way the website reaches its audience. “We’ve grown our base of followers and increased engagement since I took on the lead role. For example, we’ve seen traffic on the FOX Sports NFL Facebook page increase from roughly 250k followers to over 1.2 million in a 15 month span. We consider what people are looking for now, today, in 2016. Getting people to click, read, and care about your social media posts is not an easy task since the web is already so saturated. Our Facebook page is just one slice of the pie, but it’s something I’ve overseen and I am proud of our success.” James and his team have been busy during the playoffs and are gearing up for the Super Bowl this weekend.

In addition to his web work, James teaches as an adjunct Journalism professor at Hofstra. “I taught there from 2007 to 2010, but I decided to return in 2015. I love teaching journalism, giving students guidance, and helping them progress and grow. It’s a different kind of gratification.”

James believes much of his success stems from the lessons he learned at Molloy. “One of the great lessons I learned was when I backed out of an opportunity to join the Varsity B golf team. Thanks to advice from Mr. Niklaus afterward I realized that that is something I can’t afford to do throughout my life. That was an important lesson for me.” This was just one experience that left James with a lasting impression. “Molloy is one of the most important parts of my life. It gave me a lot of structure. It taught me to be organized, accountable, and prompt. It instilled morals and values in me. I carry these lessons with me now, and I can honestly say they shaped me both personally and professionally.” James also benefited from Peer Groups. “Br. James Norton was so helpful to me, and he has remained a positive influence throughout my life. I cherish the school and enjoy going back to visit. Some of my best friends are my Stanner classmates, and I try to see them whenever possible. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without attending Molloy. I hope to one day share my professional insights with students, or help in any other way I can.”

Jim Sheehan Talks Wine, Quality & Bargains

When: Thursday, February 11th, 2016 | 6:30pm

Where: Archbishop Molloy High School

Who: Alumni, Parents & Friends (Ages 21+)

Admission: $50 per person (Limited seating)

Contact: Joe Sommo ’03 | jsommo@molloyhs.org

REGISTER ONLINE

This event has limited seating, so please don’t wait to register online this weekend! What began in 1987 as a small outing featuring less than 15 golfers has since grown into one of the premier Catholic high school outings in New York City. Last year, over 330 golfers teed up for Molloy’s scholarship program – an astounding, humbling number to say the least. Each year we extend the invitation to support our students through this outing, and each year the Stanner family responds in many ways. Some register to play golf, others purchase raffle tickets, sponsor journal ads, or simply make a donation to the event. Any way you choose to support the Stanner Golf Classic will directly impact the lives of students and families in need. Scholarships are awarded to students each year and help lessen financial burdens and or ease the stress of extraordinary circumstances that can make enrolling at Molloy more difficult.

This year’s outing will be hosted at North Hills Country Club and Plandome Country Club, whom we’ve established wonderful relationships with over the years.
