Stanners and guests celebrated Mass together in Molloy’s chapel, and afterward gathered for a delicious buffet breakfast. Alumni reminisced about the days at St. Ann’s, thumbed through yearbooks, and reconnected with other Stanners who have become familiar faces after attending several recent breakfasts.

We heard many great stories that morning. John Burke ’57 was flipping through newspapers from the St. Ann’s archives and found a photo of his father, John Burke Sr. ’18. Yes, John’s father was a graduate of St. Ann’s from the Class of 1918! He was on the 1917-18 Varsity basketball team, who were the “Champions of Catholic High Schools of Greater New York” that year. John Jr. was also an accomplished athlete at St. Ann’s on the track & field team. John Howley ’48 informed us that his grandson would be attending Molloy this fall, continuing the tradition of Stanners in their family. Tom Sarosy ’63 assembled his classmates from the Class of 1963 for the breakfast as well. Tom, along with Frank Fitzpatrick, Ernest Liebre, Damon Pouyat, and Stephen Surman (pictured above with President Karsten) are among a group of alumni who went to St. Ann’s Academy’s grammar school and Molloy for a total of 12 years together between both schools. Ed Gaughran ’52, who attended the breakfast with his son, Dan, was excited to come back to Molloy and catch up with classmates Joseph Curley ’52 and James Ginty ’52. made a ton of news the past two years with his amazing stats while pitching for St. John’s University, was rewarded for all of his hard work. Tom was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2016 First Year Player Draft. He was selected in the 4th round as the 123rd overall pick – an incredible achievement when considering that some of baseball’s greatest players have been selected in much later rounds (Hall of Famer Mike Piazza was famously drafted in the 62nd round). During the 2015-16 season, Tom posted a 7-3 record as a reliever with an amazing 1.17 ERA, 8 saves, and only 24 hits and 7 runs allowed in 53.2 innings pitched. He struck out 71 and walked 19. (Photo by St. John’s Athletics)

Last year, Tom was drafted by the Mets in the 15th round, however at after some consideration he decided to return to St. John’s to complete his senior year. This time, with his degree firmly in hand, Tom opted to sign his Twins contract and take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Tom has already reported to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, a minor league affiliate of the Twins. Tom had only recorded 2.1 innings at the time of this publication, but he is slated to add to that total and pitch for the remainder of the minor league season. Coach Curran would be proud!
