Molloy is excited to see its newest group of Stanners bring their passions and talents to Manton Street this fall. Before then, there will be a few events along the way that we hope will help our freshman class get further acclimated with their new school. The following day, the group assisted with restocking the food pantry, which serves over 1,500 people weekly. That afternoon was spent serving at the Lazarus House soup kitchen, eventually ending the day by dropping off toys for children on behalf of Project Bethlehem. After two full days of service and reflection, the group celebrated a Christmas prayer service with our friends at Central Catholic High School, a fellow Marist school. Deirdre and Chris represent Molloy in the CHSAA’s Captains Club, a league-wide group with members from each Catholic high school in Queens and Brooklyn. Club members attend meetings to discuss league policies and make recommendations to help keep the Catholic in the CHSAA. Deirdre is part of the club’s media relations team, while Chris has been working with peers at other schools to draft a formal mission statement for the Captains Club.

Earlier this school year, Deirdre and Chris launched two initiatives that would be celebrated by the CHSAA. First, they introduced a document called Code of Conduct, which outlines standards of fair play, sportsmanship, and respectful competition. Their second initiative was creating a prayer that teams can use prior to games. The Code of Conduct and pre-game prayer were designed as posters and can be printed and hung in gymnasiums around the league. More recently, Deirdre and Chris attended a luncheon sponsored by the CHSAA to honor their contributions and receive some insight from guest speakers and league officials.

At Molloy, Deirdre and Chris are part of the Sports Management Club, which has made great strides in improving Molloy’s ability to promote and report on all of its athletic teams. Club members create promotional flyers and graphics (including the bowling image in the preceding story), write game recaps and athlete spotlights, provide photography and video at games, and contribute frequent content to the wonderful @molloyhs_athletics Instagram account. Deirdre and Chris are leaders in the club and do a great job working with their classmates to get all the exciting sports news out to the public. The Beehive highly encourages readers to click the button below to visit the Instagram page and see their great work in action.

Congratulations Deirdre and Chris and keep up the good work!

MORE SPORTS NEWS ON INSTAGRAM

Happy 99th Birthday, Coach Lou Carnesecca!

On January 5th, the legendary Lou Carnesecca ’43 celebrated his 99th birthday! We think of his service in the U.S. Coast Guard (Pacific Theatre Operations) during World War II, and his coaching career at St. Ann’s Academy and Molloy. At Molloy, Coach Carnesecca helped lead the Stanners to an undefeated City Champion season in 1957-58 before passing the baton to Jack Curran the following season. share two sports reunions that took place in the last two weeks! First, on Friday, December 29th, former members of the varsity swim teams joined in the fun of the current team’s annual Relay Carnival 🏊🏼‍♀️. Every year during Christmas break practice, the team competes in wacky relays. Our alumni took first place in the competition! Clarence was an exceptional basketball player at Molloy and was part of its undefeated 1957-58 varsity team, playing under Coach Lou Carnesecca ’43. After graduating from Molloy, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp, serving for six years before leaving to attend Long Island University on a basketball scholarship. He earned a degree in accounting and later worked as a Certified Public Accountant. Clarence had a wonderful career, becoming one of the first African Americans to be a partner in a major accounting firm, Oppenheim, Appel and Dixon. He later opened his own consulting firm, Clarence Davis Enterprises, through which he served businesses ranging from television studios and sod farms to the American Red Cross. In the late 1980s, Clarence generously supported Molloy as the Ralph DeChiaro Center for the Arts was first constructed. Today, this extension houses Molloy’s Chemistry Lab, Biology Lab, and Theater. Clarence’s name resides on a plaque on the front of Molloy’s stage as an acknowledgment of his kindness and generosity. Please join Molloy in praying for Clarence and his loved ones. | Click Here for More Information

We were recently informed of the passing of Robert James “Gil” Gillanders ’56 on November 7, 2023.
