Stanners held up flags representing their cultural heritages, all while playing music and cheering as they passed each homeroom. While basketball and baseball have been the dominant pro-athletic tracks, this school year a star athlete in another sport is emerging: swimmer Sean Green \u201825.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A junior at Molloy, Sean has been swimming since he was about nine years old. \u201cI started swimming because of my family,\u201d shares Sean, with his grandpa, dad, sister, and aunt all sharing a love for the sport. Sean continued swimming at Molloy, joining the varsity swim team in just his freshman year, while simultaneously swimming for his club team, the Long Island Aquatic Club.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sean\u2019s dedication to the sport both in and out of Molloy has earned him various awards, accolades, and titles. He currently holds the Molloy school record in the 200 free, and is rated number three in the country overall in his age group, but rated number one in the 400 Individual Medley (IM). Sean is the current 18 and under national champion in the 400 IM, and last year he was the 18 and under national champion in the 800 free. I have a great relationship with all of them, we communicate really well, and I think that\u2019s helped me,\u201d shares Sean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just this past weekend, Sean competed at A Champs, winning the 200 free and breaking his own school record by three seconds! He also broke the 500 record in the city, state, and federation, all of which were records set a decade ago, as well as the 23 year old school record by a whole seven seconds! At the end of the meet, Sean was awarded the Vinny Harkins MVP Award, making this a spectacular personal best!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Heather Green-Wresch, Executive Director of Enrollment Management, head coach of Molloy\u2019s boys and girls swim teams, and Sean\u2019s aunt, is extremely proud of his accomplishments. \u201cI am so proud to watch Sean swim,\u201d says Ms. Green-Wresch. \u201cHe has such wonderful school spirit and is always helping and cheering his teammates on. I cannot wait to see what great things he will accomplish in the future!\u201d Although still a junior, Sean has already committed to swimming at the University of Georgia in 2025, and was awarded a full-tuition scholarship. Congratulations, Sean! Chaperoned by <strong>Mr. Joe Touzin<\/strong>, Computer Science &amp; Engineering students toured the school\u2019s campus and learned about the future of air travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While on the trip, Stanners were introduced to Joby, a startup company that creates electronic aerospace vehicles. The company is working on a vehicle called the eVTOL, a large drone that will act as an air taxi, meant to compete with ground travel. Those in attendance even had the chance to experience a flight simulator! Mr. Touzin thought the trip was \u201ca unique opportunity to dive deep into the aviation, engineering, and tech fields,\u201d and students<strong> Ayden Montalvo \u201824<\/strong> and <strong>Morgan Stuart \u201824<\/strong> thought it was simply \u201cexhilarating\u201d and \u201cinsightful!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Westen Lipin \u201826<\/strong> shares, \u201cThe hangar was probably my favorite part of the indoor tour, as viewing the boxer engines set in the aircraft with the hydromatic propeller pitch controllers exposed was an amazing sight.\u201d He continues, \u201cSeeing the engine display outside of the building was another highlight of my day. Mr. Nyahuma has gathered statues and sculptures from West Africa, including pieces from native tribes spanning across Ghana and Egypt. He also has more modern works of African-American art, some of which came from the Birmingham Museum in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what inspired Mr. Nyahuma to collect such artifacts, he responded, \u201cWhen you become a collector it\u2019s never on purpose. You see something, you feel smitten, you like it, you get it. And the next thing you know, you\u2019ve started to collect things. It\u2019s like an evolution.\u201d However, Mr. Nyahuma says the main inspiration behind his collection is wanting to understand and embrace culture. Molloy\u2019s D&amp;I consultant <strong>Dr. Alice Prince<\/strong> commented on the exhibit, stating, \u201cI think regardless of it being Black History Month, I believe it is so important for us to embrace culture. This exhibit is amazing and we are also going to be procuring more cultural exhibits in the future.\u201d She believes that cultural exhibits like Mr. Nyahuma&#8217;s are impactful for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classes were flowing in and out of the exhibit throughout the day. Mr. Nyahuma shared with students the significance of culture and tradition, as well as the importance of understanding personal history and the roots of where we all come from. In February at the Milrose Games, the team of <strong>Maria Badalamenti \u201825<\/strong>, <strong>Eva Gonzalez \u201824<\/strong>, <strong>Camille Munoz \u201825<\/strong>, and <strong>Jenna Wright \u201824<\/strong> won the CHSAA 4x400m Relay with a time of 4:06.17. This broke Molloy\u2019s school record set back in 2010 by over 4 seconds! Milrose Games is a prestigious annual Track and Field event that showcases many incredible student-athletes from across the country, and we are proud of our students for doing so well in such a setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Intersectional Championships on February 17th, the girls overall team placed second. Jenna Wright broke the Molloy record in the 300m, qualifying her for the National Championships. She held this record for just over one minute, when Eva Gonzalez set the new record at 41.86 seconds. Eva also placed second in the 600m, qualifying her for the NY State and National Championships. The goal of the collaboration was to highlight our amazing alumni, give current students a chance to see a glimpse into their near futures as college students and professionals, as well as increase belonging at our school. Alumni <strong>Sydney Bryant \u201819<\/strong>, <strong>Keren Elmore \u201822<\/strong>, <strong>Benedict Harvey \u201814<\/strong>, <strong>Autumn Hill \u201822<\/strong>, and <strong>Rob Lewis \u201817<\/strong> took time out of their busy schedules to speak to Stanners about their academic and professional careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panel member career paths ranged from Speech-Pathology and Audiology to Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace.
