style="height:5px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer">

On December 18th, students from Marist Brothers US schools, including Central Catholic High School (Massachusetts), Mount St. Michael Academy (The Bronx), Archbishop Molloy High School, and Christopher Columbus High School (Miami), joined students from the Sister Shirley Kolmer Memorial Catholic School from the new Marist Brothers school in Liberia for an international virtual gathering of Marist young people.

Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85, US Provincial, was recently in Liberia for the opening of the new Marist-owned school located in the city of Gardnersville. The new school in Liberia was made possible in large part through charitable collections conducted by Marist students through school fundraisers. A Marist Brothers school is also under construction in Madagascar, with students once again playing a big role in making it a reality through their charity.

Marist students had such a tremendous impact in getting the school in Liberia built, that Br. Dan and the Marist Brothers decided to virtually connect USA students with some of the new Liberian students. The virtual call began with Br. Dan welcoming everyone and making a few introductions. This was followed by students from each school asking and answering questions, with discussions centering on the Marist Charism, the Advent season, and more. The meeting ended with the praying of the Memorare.

“This was an important moment for the US Province,” said Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81. “The Marist Institute in Rome has paved the way to create a truly global network of schools. It is so exciting to connect international students who share the same values and who are inspired by the same stories and pivotal moments of St. Marcellin and the Marist Brothers.” President Karsten continued, “It is clear that the Marist Charism crosses borders, highlighting different cultural points of view with a shared Marist heart.”

You can watch the virtual meeting via the video player below. Dan and all the students who participated in this historic meeting!

<figure class="wp-block-embed living out the Marist spirituality inherited from St. Marcellin Champagnat. All Marists of Champagnat seek to grow in communion, following Mary’s example of making Jesus known and loved in our world, and to support each other through continual formation experiences.

Just before 2024 came to a close, a group of Marists of Champagnat volunteered at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan. This opportunity involved staffing the church’s indoor and takeaway meal services at their Welcome Table soup kitchen. The volunteers – which included President Richard Karsten ’81, Mrs. Kathy Karsten P ’09 ’12 ’13, social studies teacher Ms. Abbey Hipkin, and Br. Rob Dittus ’15 representing the Molloy community – started their day with Mass, then moved over to the soup kitchen. Together, the volunteers plated meals on the serving line, transported meal bags, and distributed hot coffee to all guests. The Marists of Champagnat also assisted with clean-up at the end of the day. An estimated 1,000+ meals were served!

President Karsten shares, “Part of committing to living as a Marist of Champagnat is to serve those in need. The St. Francis Xavier mission is an impactful way to connect directly with those in our community who need help. It was wonderful to provide this service while teaming up with our New York / New Jersey area Marists of Champagnat.”

MARISTS OF CHAMPAGNAT – MORE INFO

Stanner Athletes of the Week for 12/16 – 12/22: Sophomore swimmer Niley Jones ’27 scored 20 points in her events to help secure the team wins for this week in December. Joining in the celebration were current players, coaches, and Stanner supporters, making for a very special day for Molloy’s girls basketball program. It was an honor host our basketball alumnae as they reconnected, reminisced, and helped honor the incredible journey of girls basketball that began over two decades ago. Willie passed away at his Harlem residence, where he lived for over 40 years.

Willie Hall, known to many as “Kid Kangaroo,” began his hoops career for the Varsity team at St. Ann’s Academy. He started out as a freshman on the team, but rose through the ranks over the years to eventually captain his squad while blossoming into one of St. Ann’s/Molloy’s greatest rebounders. He had the ability to play anywhere on the court, boasted an unbeatable jump shot, and could score from every conceivable angle. Willie was so good that he was recognized in “Dell Sports” magazine as one of the top ten high school players in New York City from 1957-1958. With Willie’s contributions, the Stanners went an undefeated 60-0 under coach Lou Carnesecca ’43 during Willie’s senior year. He would continue is athletic excellence after Molloy, attending nearby St. John’s University. While at St. John’s, Willie would once again find himself on an undefeated squad, playing for an elite Johnnie’s freshman team in 1959.

Later in life, Willie would work in the legal field. He spent many years as an Associate Senior Junvenile Counselor at the Department of Juvenile Justice. In 2013, Willie was inducted into the Basketball Old-Timers of America Hall of Fame. Speaking about this honor, Willie said, “I had so many good people behind me like Coach Carnesecca, Jack Curran…I had so many good people in my life that made the world a better place for me and a lot of other people. And I love that to this day.” Willie was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame on September 16, 2015.

Please join us in prayer for Willie Hall and his loved ones during their time of mourning.

With deep sadness, the Marist Brothers announce the sudden death of Brother Luis Carlos Gutiérrez, Vicar General of the Marist Institute.
