The Michael J. Cawley Memorial Foundation invites the Molloy community to its 23rd Annual Benefit in memory of the late Firefighter Michael J. Cawley ’87<\/strong>. Proceeds from this event support Molloy students through the gift of scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Molloy, Michael was an active student, participating in retreats at Esopus, volunteering at summer special camps, and serving as a retreat leader. His dedication to service and retreats earned him a St. Marcellin Champagnat Service Award at <\/a>graduation. After college, Michael remained drawn to the ideals of service and leadership, leading him to pursue a career with the FDNY. He primarily worked with Ladder Company 136 in Queens with time also served in Engine Companies 35 and 286.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 11, 2001, Michael bravely joined his FDNY brethren, boarding a Rescue 4 fire truck bound for lower Manhattan in response to the terror attack \u2013 this despite being relieved of duty earlier that morning. Michael unfortunately did not survive the events of that day. He is remembered for his kindness, selflessness, and friendship. Michael is forever honored in Molloy’s Stanner Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molloy and the Michael J. Cawley Memorial Foundation carry on Michael’s legacy through an annual Named Scholarship, The Firefighter Michael J. Cawley Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship has helped many deserving students to attend Molloy, affording them the opportunity to enjoy the enriching environment and service and retreat programs that Michael once loved. Molloy Celebrates Beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Prayer Service<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 5th, Molloy celebrated Ash Wednesday by holding a prayer service for all students, faculty, and staff. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, which is the 40-day preparatory period before Easter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ash Wednesday acts as a reminder of our need for reconciliation with God. The season of Lent is a time for connecting with God and growing closer to Him. In a message to the US Province, Provincial Br. Dan O\u2019Riordan<\/strong> \u201985 shared, \u201cAsh Wednesday is the beginning of a time allowing each of us to embrace the Gospel and not only mark our foreheads with ashes in the sign of the cross, but also to be true witnesses to others and recognizing how we are all called to be a modern Simon in helping others to carry their crosses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happy Pi Day \u03c0! March 14th is an annual celebration of Pi, a limitless mathematical constant beginning with the digits 3.14 that measures the ratio of a circle\u2019s circumference to its diameter. As an exercise to illustrate the infinite nature of Pi, students in Ms. Pizzo\u2019s, Ms. Jones\u2019s, and Ms. Keyes\u2019s math classes graphed and decorated a total of 486 digits of Pi! The digits have since been hung along the third floor hallway, extending from one end of the building to the other!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a full team effort by the Math Department, beginning with the students first plotting coordinate points and designing the digits. Ms. Jones then ordered each of the 486 digits that were created, followed by Ms. Pizzo decorating the hallway. \u201cWe are so happy with how this project turned out,\u201d said Ms. Pizzo, who serves as Molloy\u2019s Math Department Chairperson. \u201cThe project was fun and gives the students some tangible idea about the concept of an irrational number \u2013 non-terminating and non-repeating.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 8th, over 400 families from the incoming 9th Grade class visited Molloy for the Freshman Welcome Event! Students from the Class of 2029 and their families had the chance to visit an array of tables representing different departments, including Academics, Admissions, Freshman Camp, Finance, Athletics, and more! Additionally, the incoming freshmen took their ID pictures, had the chance to purchase apparel, and enjoyed some delicious snacks! Welcome, Class of 2029, to the Molloy family! On March 10th, 13 members of Molloy\u2019s STEAM Club took a field trip to the Intrepid Museum! The group had the opportunity to explore the Hangar and Flight Decks of the USS Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that has since been decommissioned and repurposed as a museum dedicated to honoring various sea, air, and space innovations and accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Club moderator and Physics teacher Mr. Chris Autera \u201816<\/strong> shared, \u201cWe saw eyewitness artifacts from Armed Forces members who served in WWII and the Vietnam War. In a \u2018hands-on\u2019 exhibit, students were able to explore models of various aircrafts, sit in pilot’s areas, and see what life was like for the service people on board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Flight Deck, students took a close look at many different types of aircrafts used throughout the 20th century, as well as some views of Manhattan and New Jersey. In an indoor exhibit, they walked underneath and around the Space Shuttle Enterprise, a first-of-its-kind prototype from the 1970s, which paved the way for the orbital flights of later shuttles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Autera exclaimed, \u201cThis engaging trip brought in all five key components of \u2018STEAM\u2019 (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and the students enjoyed our time at the Intrepid!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teams and clubs at Molloy have the opportunity to participate in group retreats after school, run by our wonderful Campus Ministers. On February 25th, the boys varsity lacrosse team took part in their first ever athletic team retreat. The theme of the retreat was “Unity” and how our Marist pillars can support us as members of a family\/team. The afternoon was filled with prayer, team building experiences, and reflections on the importance of fostering unity on and off the <\/a>lacrosse field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 27th, the boys varsity baseball team took part in their first ever athletic team retreat. The theme for this retreat was “Family and Being Selfless,” and the team spent time in prayer, participated in team building challenges, and reflected on how they can collectively create a team culture where the focus is not necessarily on the individual, but rather on the team and the idea of family. Team members walked away with a better understanding of what it means to be a team, as well as how the Marist pillars can support them in their endeavors as student athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 3rd, members of the Molloy Baking Club gathered to take part in a retreat with the theme “Gathered Around the Table: Social Comfort in an Environment of Warmth, Food and Caring.\u201d Guest speaker and AMHS Board Member, Mrs. Nan Doherty<\/strong>, joined participants and shared about her love of baking, how she embraces Marist hospitality, and how she brings God’s love to her community through the gift of baking. Stanners were inspired by the connections between their love of baking and our shared Marist values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, members of the Class of 2025 put on an amazing Senior Show! The show, Law & Order: The Molloy Trials, was written, choreographed, and performed entirely by seniors for their fellow classmates. Each Stanner involved either played a student or member of Molloy\u2019s faculty, making the audience laugh from beginning to end! Thank you to all of the seniors that participated in this fun tradition, and thank you to Director Ms. Shannon Winters \u201806<\/strong> for her dedication to our theater productions. Bowling<\/strong> – Congratulations to MJ Sim \u201827<\/strong> on winning the CHSAA New York State Bowling Championship! MJ shot 232, 206, 213, 237 and 215, which placed him 2nd in the step ladder round. In the playoff round, MJ defeated the #3 contender by a score of 269 to 258. MJ moved on to play the #1 contender in the finals and defeated him by a score of 262 to 171 to win his second New York State Championship! Three other Stanners bowled in the State Championship. Sofia Tolentino \u201827<\/strong> shot 183, 161, 196, 171 and 174, which landed her 5th in the step ladder round. She finished in 5th place overall. Anthony Rella \u201827<\/strong> finished in 8th place overall. Nico Tolentino \u201825<\/strong> finished in 23rd place overall. Congratulations to our New York State Bowling contenders! Basketball <\/strong>– Congratulations to our JV Basketball Team on winning the CHSAA City Championship! The game, against St. Peter\u2019s High School of Staten Island, was played at Molloy on March 1st. At halftime, Stanners had a 36 to 22 lead over St. Peter\u2019s. With great defense, great shots, and great rebounding, Molloy was able to defeat St. Peter\u2019s and win the City Championship by a score of 69 to 45!
Andrew Koumoullos \u201828<\/strong> scored 22 points, TJ Elor \u201828<\/strong> scored 13 points, and Syncere Ferguson \u201827 scored 13 points! Top scorers for the season were Andrew Koumoullos, TJ Elor, and Mike Nembhard \u201828. Congratulations to all of the players for their hard work and dedication this season, and congratulations to Head Coach Chris Murphy \u201887<\/strong>, Assistant Coaches Lamar Parker \u201895 and Timmy White \u201801, and Athletic Director Mr. Mike McCleary<\/strong>. Swimming<\/strong> – Sean Green ’25<\/strong> won both of his events at the State Championships on March 8th! He now has the state, federation, pool, city, and school records in the 200 Free and 500 Free. He was also voted Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet!<\/td><\/tr>
Outdoor Track & Field<\/strong> – At the Eastern State Championships on March 8th, Travis Hui ’28<\/strong> placed 5th in Pole Vault (13′.0″), Antonio Hernandez ’25<\/strong> placed 2nd in High Jump (6’4″), and Camille Munoz ’25<\/strong> placed 6th in High Jump (5’0″). Camille was also named one of the CHSAA Sportsmanship Award Winners for 2024-25!<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

On March 3rd, Molloy welcomed back alumnus Professor Al Beer \u201867<\/strong> from St. John\u2019s University to present to students in our math classes! Professor Beer spoke about the fields of Actuarial Science and Risk Management, describing the different applications of each. He explained that actuaries manage risk in a variety of fields and within the scope of important worldwide issues, such as climate change, cyber crime, pension plans, and insurance policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Beer was accompanied by recent alumna Angelina Vereshchagina \u201824<\/strong>, a first year Actuarial Science student at SJU who spoke to students about her journey into choosing her school and major. She shared that she loves math and knew that SJU\u2019s Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science has one of the best programs in the country! It was a perfect fit for Angelina, who encouraged fellow Stanners to consider this path among their options in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you to Professor Beer and Angelina for taking the time to visit Molloy and give Stanners an insight on St. John\u2019s and this interesting career choice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to St. John’s Men’s Basketball, who recently captured their first Big East Regular Season Championship in 40 years! Among the Stanners who were in attendance to celebrate this milestone achievement were SJU Board of Trustees member Jim Shannon ’83<\/strong> and SJU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed Kull ’99<\/strong>. It is incredible that this achievement occurred just months into Ed’s first year in his new role at SJU. Pictured above are Jim and Ed on the court after the big win earlier this month. Stanner sighting! Michael O\u2019Toole ’24<\/strong> was recently spotlighted in the Marist Young Adult e-newsletter. A freshman at Scranton University, Michael shared that becoming more involved in the Marist Young Adult community has been “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.” He shared that being involved with MYA has provided him the opportunity to “connect with individuals from all over the world while further enriching my faith in a supportive environment. There is no family like our Marist family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He devoted 40 years of his career to teaching special education, positively impacting countless students and colleagues. We are saddened to share the passing of Dr. John “Doc” Doherty, PhD, ’65<\/strong> on February 9, 2025. A graduate of Marist College, John served the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for 20 years, retiring as Captain of Detectives. After this, he returned to Marist College, where he served as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice as well as Department Chair. He retired from Marist after 28 years, and was known to often say that he was lucky to have two careers that he “absolutely loved.” Please keep John and his loved ones in your prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
