Stanners Named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Yoojin Chang \u201826<\/strong>, Michael McConville \u201826<\/strong>, Shane Mochwart \u201826<\/strong>, and Yosef Naser \u201826<\/strong> on being named Commended Students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise, shown by their performances on the 2024 PSAT\/NMSQT. \u201cThose being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,\u201d commented a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are excited for all that lies ahead for our students and support them as they continue striving for academic success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lay Marist Leadership Embodying the Mission of Faith & Presence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

At the September meeting of the Christopher Columbus High School Board (a fellow Marist school), Lay Marist Council USA members Pete Marti <\/strong>(CCHS faculty) and Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81<\/strong> (Board Member) modeled the core spirit of the Marist vocation: to be present, to listen, and to help form young people in faith through authentic relationships. For part of the meeting, Pete offered a compelling presentation on findings from the Springtide Research Institute, a leading organization studying the inner lives of young people. The survey results shed light on how students today experience belonging, navigate their faith journeys, and perceive the influence of trusted adults, educators, and parents. Students from Marist schools and ministries across the USA took part in the survey. Their participation is a testament to the growing partnership of lay Marists in leadership roles at schools around the US and globally, continuing the mission of St. Marcellin Champagnat in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seniors and Freshmen Team Up For Good Cause<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our students started off the 2025-26 school year doing what they do best: service! On September 12th, the Class of 2025 celebrated Senior Backpack Day<\/strong>, during which the seniors were encouraged to bring in children’s backpacks of all shapes and sizes to be donated to young Queens students in need. The backpacks were each stuffed with school supplies that were previously donated by the freshman class during their one-day retreat back in August. Once filled with the supplies, the backpacks were collected and donated to St. Marguerite’s Food Pantry to be distributed to families in the Our Lady of Fatima parish. Special thanks to our seniors, freshmen, and Campus Ministry for organizing this wonderful donation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speech & Debate<\/strong> Kicks Off Season at Yale Invitational<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Molloy’s Speech & Debate team, which kicked off its 2025-26 season with two exciting events\u2014including at Yale University!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 13th, Molloy competed at the Tri-State Debate League’s first event of the year, which served as a warmup workshop\/scrimmage tournament to shake off any summer rust. Molloy was represented by Elizabeth Canty ’26<\/strong>, Isaac Contreras ’27<\/strong>, and James Lukose ’28<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last weekend, Molloy attended the first official tournament of the season: the prestigious Yale Invitational in New Haven, Connecticut! This event saw Molloy compete against the best teams in the country. Five Stanners attended the tournament and did an outstanding job representing Molloy. Congratulations to Juliette Bonello ’27<\/strong>, Isaac Contreras ’27<\/strong>, James Lukose ’28<\/strong>, Anya Satyanarayana ’27<\/strong>, and James Vanegas-Molina ’27<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Mr. Andy Kostel<\/strong>, who is celebrating his 50th anniversary as Head Coach of Molloy’s boys varsity soccer team! Coach Kostel, who was inducted into the Stanner Hall of Fame earlier this year, has a stellar resume as head coach, including 17 B\/Q Championships, 15 City Championships, and 2 State Championships. Girls Varsity Soccer Experiences After School Retreat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 23rd, our girls varsity soccer team participated in an after school athletic retreat, led by Campus Ministry! The theme of the afternoon was, \u201cBelief and Trust: In ourselves, our teammates, and God.\u201d Players took part in prayer, reflections, and team-building activities. The team also explored how our Marist pillars can support our faith and our endeavors on and off the playing field. By the end of the retreat, the players embraced the idea that \u201cthose who leave everything in God\u2019s hands will eventually see God\u2019s hands in everything.\u201d It was a beautiful afternoon of team bonding and family spirit on full display! We cannot wait to see all that this team will achieve this year with a renewed perspective and outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esopus Hosts Inaugural Molloy Alumni Retreat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 13th and 14th, the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus hosted the first-ever Molloy Alumni Retreat! Themed “Living Marist: Looking Back and Moving Forward<\/em>,” the retreat served as a chance for our alumni to reflect on their Molloy experience and how they can continue to live out their lives as Marists in adulthood. This inaugural retreat welcomed alumni from the Classes of 2010 through 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities included games, talks, personal and group reflection, and opportunities to connect with both old and new friends. It was a wonderful experience that inspired those in attendance to look back at how their time at Molloy shaped them and what path of faith that formation may open to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Coleman ’19<\/strong> was in attendance and shares, “The Alumni Retreat was exactly what I needed to remind me of just how important Esopus was to my Molloy experience! An environment catered to speaking with and listening to people whose stories I might never have heard otherwise isn\u2019t something I could ever take for granted. I can\u2019t wait for the next one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaheeda Anif ’10<\/strong> also attended the retreat and expressed her deep appreciation for the experience: \u201cIt was such an honor attending the first ever Alumni Retreat! Words can\u2019t explain what Esopus means to me, the connection we have as Stanners, and what it means to be a part of the Marist family. It definitely reminded me of who I am, where I come from, how much I love my connection with God, and how incredibly grateful I am to be a Marist youth. Non scholae sed vitae<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t want to give away too many details about the retreat in The Beehive<\/em>, because our hope is to offer this experience again next year for another group of alumni! One thing is for sure: the alumni who returned to Esopus, some for the first time in many years, proved that you can <\/em>come home again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanners at the Patrick J. Carroll<\/strong> Esopus Century Ride<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to members of the Class of 1988 who participated in this year’s Patrick J. Carroll Esopus Century Ride! ’88 had three riders and one support person at this year’s event. Pictured: Maurice Alvarez ’88<\/strong>, James Sheldon ’88<\/strong>, and John McDonald ’88<\/strong>. (Attended, but not pictured: John Morris ’88<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This annual event is a challenging 100-mile bicycle ride from Van Cortlandt Park along the Rail Trail to the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus. The ride raises money to improve the facilities that campers enjoy at MBCE and the Mid-Hudson Valley Camps each year. The ride was recently renamed in honor of the late Patrick J. Carroll ’81<\/strong>, a beloved Stanner who was an avid volunteer at Esopus throughout his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you to the Class of 1988 and to the many Molloy alumni who have participated in the ride over the years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are saddened to share the passing of Anton F. Luttenberger ’62<\/strong> on August 22, 2025. Anton, known by many as Tony, was an avid traveler who explored many countries in Asia and Europe, and notably he once climbed Mt. Everest. In his later years he enjoyed his work as a yoga therapist and instructor, teaching in many different settings around Key West, Florida.
