We look forward to seeing our new Stanners in March at our Freshman Welcome Event, over the summer at Freshman Camp, and in September as they officially begin their high school journey. New Saltwater Aquarium is Latest Addition to Molloy’s Biology Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This school year, Molloy installed a saltwater aquarium in the Biology Lab, creating an exciting new hands-on learning opportunity for our students! Funded by donations from the 2024 Stanner-a-Thon, the aquarium began as an idea from biology teacher Mr. John Attard \u201906<\/strong>. As a longtime saltwater aquarium owner, Mr. Attard saw the educational value of bringing a reef tank into the classroom, especially at a school that offers Biology, Marine Biology, and a thriving Biology Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 100-gallon tank welcomed its first resident, a clownfish named Ack, in honor of late beloved Marist Brother and biology teacher Br. Aquinas Richard \u201848<\/strong>. Since then, the aquarium has continued to grow and now houses three fish, as well as coral, sea snails, hermit crabs, and other marine invertebrates. \u201cWe\u2019re one of the very few schools west of Long Island to have a saltwater reef tank,\u201d Mr. Attard shared. \u201cWe plan to continue adding fish and expanding the environment within the tank.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with Mr. Attard, members of Molloy\u2019s Biology Club are responsible for maintaining the aquarium. Every two weeks, students conduct water tests to monitor conditions and support a thriving environment. \u201cIt\u2019s a little piece of the ocean in the Bio Lab,\u201d Mr. Attard said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a great way for students to develop an appreciation for how delicate life can be.\u201d With proper care, some of the fish in the tank can live for up to 30 years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the aquarium is still in its early stages, Mr. Attard reiterated that there are plans to add more fish and marine life over time. In the future, it could be incorporated into Molloy\u2019s Biology, Marine Biology, and advanced science classes. This exciting addition is already enhancing life in the Biology Lab, and we can\u2019t wait to see how it continues to grow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seniors Recognized for Outstanding Service<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Anna Kril<\/strong>, President and Founder of the breast cancer foundation SHAREing & CAREing, visited Molloy to speak with members of the Knitting & Crafts Club. During her presentation, she shared how the care baskets her foundation distributes to women undergoing breast cancer treatment during the holiday season each included a pipe cleaner flower made and donated by club members in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna recounted several moving stories that illustrated the impact of this small gesture, including the story of a young mother who, after receiving her flower, brought it with her to every treatment because it provided hope during a difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her visit, Anna also presented Knitting & Crafts Club President Carrie Li \u201926<\/strong> and Vice President Kaylani Ramirez \u201926<\/strong> with certificates of appreciation, acknowledging how a simple act of kindness from Molloy students has touched countless lives in meaningful and lasting ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Dorothy DeNoto<\/strong>, moderator of the club, is in \u201cawe of the amount of students, both boys and girls, who come to make crafts when they know it\u2019s for service.\u201d She is excited to continue the relationship with SHAREing & CAREing, and looks forward to seeing what the future holds for service opportunities that revolve around \u201ccaring in the Marist way!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molloy Hosts Retreat for Our Lady of Mercy<\/strong> Catholic Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, January 15th, eighth graders from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy visited Archbishop Molloy High School for a day retreat, led by Campus Ministry! The retreat focused on the theme of “Listening to God’s Call” and how these eighth graders can discern what God is calling them to do as they prepare to graduate and begin their high school careers. The eighth graders were led by four of our outstanding Stanner retreat leaders. Together, they shared prayer, reflections, and took part in challenges that brought the theme of “Listening to God’s Call” to life. We truly hope that God calls many of them to Molloy next year as members of the Class of 2030!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campus Ministry is excited to host more local grammar schools for similar retreats over the next few weeks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Class of 2029 recently enjoyed a weekend retreat at the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus! Our freshman class took this opportunity to disconnect from technology, take a break from their busy lives, and center themselves in the presence of God and their classmates. The weekend included prayer, reflection, and personal and community growth. Special thanks to our faculty chaperones and student counselors for helping to lead a successful retreat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 10th, Molloy hosted its 31st Annual Stanner Games! Held at the 168th Street Armory in Manhattan, the Stanner Games are a nationally recognized track and field meet that welcomes thousands of athletes from hundreds of schools across multiple states. Competitors took part in a wide range of events, including hurdles, relays, sprints, shot put, long jump, and more. The year\u2019s event featured 2,497 athletes representing 113 teams and was supported by nearly 50 alumni, staff, and family volunteers, along with 20 student volunteers who helped ensure the meet ran smoothly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. AJ Power \u201884<\/strong>, Molloy\u2019s head coach of girls track & field, shared that coaches from across the country consistently say the Stanner Games is \u201cone of their favorite meets of the year,\u201d and that \u201cofficials treat athletes with unparalleled respect and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, supervised, and attended this year\u2019s Stanner Games, and congratulations to the entire Molloy track and field community on another outstanding event!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bowling<\/strong> – Congratulations to our Varsity Bowling team, who captured the City Championship! Congratulations as well to our JV Bowling team, who finished 2nd in the City! The entire Varsity squad – MJ Sim Jr. ’27<\/strong>, Anthony Rella ’27<\/strong>, Joseph LaSala ’28<\/strong>, Christian Schmidt ’26<\/strong>, and Sofia Tolentino ’27<\/strong> – has qualified for the State Bowling Tournament on February 28th at Babylon Bowl.<\/td><\/tr>
Swimming<\/strong> – Congratulations to Girls Varsity Swimming, who are undefeated this season, as well as Dual Meet & B\/Q Champions! Girls “B” Champs will take place on January 25th (7:00am) at Queens College. Boys “B” Champs will be held on January 24th (9:00am) at Lehman College.<\/td><\/tr>

Last week, several Stanner Player alumni who performed in the 2016 Molloy production of the musical \u201cThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\u201d met up to watch the current off-Broadway production. Mr. Chris Autera ’16<\/strong>, Alex Celedon ’19<\/strong>, Sal DiPaola ’16<\/strong>, Niamh Girdusky ’16<\/strong>, Ch\u00e9 Negron ’19<\/strong>, Catherine Nolty ’16<\/strong>, Sarah Quispe ’19<\/strong>, Stephen Velez ’19<\/strong>, and director Ms. Shannon Winters \u201906<\/strong>. The cast and crew in attendance enjoyed the nostalgia of the show and reminiscing over their time in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater, particularly missing those Stanner Players unable to join!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessica Hernandez ’12<\/strong> was recently featured in the Long Island Herald for her volunteer work! Jessica has advocated for Pencils of Promise, a nonprofit with a focus on providing safe and well-stocked classrooms, quality teachers, and clean water for children in countries including Guatemala, Laos, Ghana, and more. Jessica organized a fundraiser on Long Island and continues to champion the cause. In the article, Jessica credits her service experience at the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus for influencing her continued passion for volunteerism.
