Molloy Celebrates Holy Week<\/strong>, Lenten Liturgies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 1st, Molloy celebrated two Lenten liturgies, one welcoming freshmen and sophomores, and one welcoming juniors and seniors. These liturgies brought our community together for an important moment of reflection and prayer as we continue our journey through Holy Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr. Nicholas Colalella<\/strong>, Molloy’s Chaplain, served as our celebrant for both liturgies. In his homily, Fr. Nick proclaimed that Holy Week is an invitation for all of us to follow Jesus more closely. We are called to mirror the actions of Saint John by following our teacher, Jesus, as closely as we can while, “not only listening to him, but following him with his every move.” By reading scripture, praying, and being present during Holy Week, we are following Jesus, but we must continue to make the effort to follow him closely rather than from afar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, our Chorus and Liturgy Committee did a wonderful job in supplementing the Liturgies with an interpretation of Mary praying to Jesus on the cross. Two students assumed the roles of Mary and Jesus on stage while Aine Harkins ’26<\/strong> and Alexander Lopez ’26<\/strong> alternated performing in song. Thank you to Mr. Jim Sheehan ’75<\/strong>, Mr. Dan Jones<\/strong>, our Chorus<\/strong>, and our Liturgy Committee<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanners Celebrate Spirit Week 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From March 23rd – March 27th, Molloy celebrated Spirit Week, a week-long event that encourages students and faculty to show their school spirit! Each day of the week is marked by a different dress down theme, contest, or afterschool event. Students earn points for their grade by participating in each dress down or activity, and the grade with the highest point total by the end of the week wins Spirit Week, along with special perks later in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dress down themes included Dress Your Age, Color Day, Anything Goes, Heritage Day, and Pajama Day, while afterschool activities included Club Day, Spirit Games, the Amazing Stanner Race, the Festival of Cultures, and the Dodgeball Tournament! Contests included Faculty Match (match the faculty member to their favorite song), and the Candy Count (guess the total number of candies in a jar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Spirit Games, each grade competes in field games similar to Freshman Field Day, but instead of the high jump, the main event is the Tug of War! The final Tug of War match saw the seniors defeat the juniors, however the juniors won the Spirit Games overall with the most points across all the various competitions (basketball, soccer, accuracy toss, relays, and more)! Another highlight of the week was the Festival of Cultures, which welcomed Stanners into the Jack Curran Gymnasium for delicious food, fun activities, and performances representing cultures from around the world. The event also included a special performance by the Stanner Players, who offered a sneak peak at their upcoming spring musical, Mean Girls: High School Edition<\/em>! The week concluded on Friday night with the Seniors vs. Faculty Basketball Game, but more about that in the Sports section of The Beehive<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final tallies for Spirit Week: Sophomores in 4th place with 1,701 points, Freshmen in 3rd place with 1,907, Seniors in 3rd place with 2,418 points, and the Juniors in 1st place with 3,445 points! Stanners Travel to Dominican Republic<\/strong> for Mission Trip<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From March 12th to the 17th, Director of Campus Ministry Mr. Richard Costa<\/strong>, along with music teacher Mr. Dan Jones<\/strong>, world language teacher Ms. Dani Espinal<\/strong>, Community and Belonging Coordinator Dr. Alice Prince<\/strong>, and 18 Stanners traveled to the Dominican Republic for the last Project 153 trip of the school year. Once again teaming up with Bold Hope, a Christian organization that connects people from around the world to help engage in service projects, Jason Amaya \u201828, Matt Azriel-Binay \u201826, Gabriella Barros-Devine \u201827, Kelton Camacho \u201826, Leonardo Chavez \u201828, Enda Connolly \u201827, Maria Damiris \u201827, Helen Gonzalez \u201827, Avinash Hemraj \u201826, Alexander Holder \u201826, Jillian Kahn \u201826, Aileen McGuire \u201827, Emily Minchala \u201827, Emily Mussalli \u201828, Dylan Mompoint \u201826, Cameron Picarello \u201826, Katelyn Vargas \u201827, and Emmerson Villaman \u201826<\/strong> answered a call to serve and put the needs of others before their own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the trip, our Stanners visited bateyes, or rural communities built around sugarcane plantations that are occupied by Haitian immigrants and Dominican workers. Those housed in the bateyes are often provided barely livable conditions, usually going without electricity or plumbing with an average salary of two to three dollars a day. Stanners were tasked by Bold Hope to go door to door and ask demographic questions so that they can better serve the community in the future. With the information from the questionnaires, Bold Hope will help them get proper paperwork and off the bateyes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanners also volunteered in a transitional community, where workers from the bateyes live while they are waiting to transition into the workforce. There, Stanners spent time with the children of many families, even facilitating a birthday party for about a dozen kids who had never had their own before. Mr. Jones, music teacher at Molloy, brought drumsticks to give out, having an impromptu drum lesson with the kids using buckets found around the community. After about an hour, they had a mini concert for everyone there! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also in these transitional communities, students were taught how to create water filtration systems using large buckets, and then were charged with going to the families\u2019 homes and helping them install and learn how to use the water systems. Bold Hope had never performed the community mapping or water filtration program before, but trusted Molloy students to perform the task with precision and compassion. Congratulations to Thomas Fischer ’26<\/strong>, Enya McClean ’26<\/strong>, and Elizabeth Meade ’26<\/strong>, who were each awarded a trophy and a $1,500 scholarship by a NY Emerald Society! Emerald Societies, celebrating Irish heritage, often award scholarships to outstanding college-bound high school seniors of Irish descent. Nominated by a faculty member, these three Stanners submitted essays highlighting their Irish heritage, ultimately being selected as winners among a panel of Emerald Society judges! Molloy Welcomes Author Monica Sherwood During Women’s History Month!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 19th, Molloy welcomed author and illustrator Monica Sherwood to speak with Stanners about her novel, \u201cThe Ice House!\u201d Hosted by Molloy\u2019s GERLL Club and Book Club, the event gave students a unique opportunity to hear about her journey as a writer, ask questions, and gain insight into the creative process, all while celebrating Women\u2019s History Month!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her visit, Monica answered questions about the publication process, where she finds inspiration, her experience as a woman in her field, and her future writing plans. She encouraged Stanners to trust their instincts and not let others stand in the way of their goals, adding, \u201cAlways focus on the positives around you, even when it feels like things aren\u2019t going your way.\u201d She encouraged students to \u201cread as much as they can,\u201d reminding them to follow their dreams because anything is possible. Molly McGuinness \u201822, a Molloy alumna and former GERLL Club member, was also in attendance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spirit Week 2026 ended in style, as Molloy hosted its annual Seniors vs. Faculty Basketball Game on Friday night, March 27th! In front of a packed Jack Curran Gymnasium, the Class of 2026 took on Molloy’s Faculty, who were coming off a big win last year and looking to make it two in a row!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game was action packed from start to finish, with the seniors leading for the majority of the contest. The faculty took their time to get in a groove, falling behind by double digits in the first half. In the second half, however, they shrunk that 10-point lead to just a single point by the final minutes. The faculty had all the momentum as the seconds ticked away, but the seniors focused on defense in the final minute, ultimately protecting their lead and securing a slim 55-54 victory! At the sound of the final buzzer, the Class of 2026 poured onto the court in celebration, with the faculty offering high-fives out of respect for a great game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the game, the evening featured dance performances by Katherine Sit ’26<\/strong>, the Dance Team<\/strong>, the Cheer Team<\/strong>, and, of course, the Sassy Seniors<\/strong> at halftime. Molloy’s Concert Band also performed throughout the game, with music teacher Mr. Dan Jones<\/strong> alternating between playing in the game and directing the band!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proceeds from the game supported the Blue Marists in Syria, who provide assistance to thousands of displaced families through the distribution of food, hygiene products, clothes, and shoes. Stanner Athletes of the Week for 3\/16-3\/22:<\/strong> JV softball player Samantha Carbonaro ’28<\/strong> put together a strong all-around performance across two games. She batted .333 with a run scored and an RBI while dominating on the mound with six scoreless innings. She allowed just one hit and struck out five. | Varsity baseball player Ayden Roman ’26<\/strong> came through big against St. Dominic’s, going 2-for-2 at the plate including a game-winning solo home run. On March 24th, members of our community gathered at Molloy for a special Lenten Night of Reflection<\/strong>, offering an opportunity escape the daily busy pace of life, connect with one another, and focus on this Holy Season. Alumni, parents, family members, and friends enjoyed dinner, followed by a service in Molloy’s chapel featuring special presenter Mr. Jim Sheehan ’75<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Sheehan’s presentation was themed Coming Home and Sending Forth<\/strong>. He began by talking about the different places he has lived throughout his life, then encouraging others to reflect on their past homes. After several readings centering Jesus and themes of home, Mr. Sheehan shared that during Lent, we are called to take up the cross, to struggle with it, to remember that we don’t walk alone with it, and that we can “get to that place where we are our best self when we are at home.” Attendees then practiced Adoration, a quiet and reflective period during which everyone prepared for Easter by focusing on Jesus, His sacrifice, and repentance. During Adoration, Molloy was happy to welcome Ms. Shannon Connolly<\/strong>, who beautifully sang several songs while playing guitar to create a truly prayerful and meditative experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Rich Costa<\/strong>, Director of Campus Ministry and Marist Mission, said the event “was an opportunity to slow down and re-orient ourselves during this penitential time. Many of us start the Lenten season with great enthusiasm to do our best in prayer, sacrifice and almsgiving, but by the 5th week of Lent, sometimes it is difficult to get to the finish line on Easter.” Mr. Costa’s hope is that the evening served as a final “push” and as a helpful reminder of the true life-changing events of Easter morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Sheehan was happy to serve as guest presenter, saying, “I am blessed to have been included in this prayerful evening. I’m grateful for all those who attended. The Spirit was a palpable, welcome presence throughout.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

’68 Alum Leads Effort to Support Fund Honoring Late Classmate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Several years ago, Dr. Bill Endy ’68<\/strong> launched a YouTube channel<\/a> he used to broadcast many of his hiking adventures. An experienced hiker, Dr. Endy even completed the Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim hike at the Grand Canyon, considered one of the most grueling hikes in the United States, at age 72! Beyond sharing his hiking journeys, Dr. Endy had hoped to gain enough followers to monetize the channel so he could raise money for Molloy’s Lt. John K. Gremse ’68 Graduation Assistance Fund<\/strong>. The award, created in memory of his late friend Lt. John “Jack” Gremse ’68<\/strong> (Stanner Hall of Fame sketch pictured above<\/em>), assists Molloy seniors facing financial burden to pay tuition and ensure graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a very wonderful update, not only has Dr. Endy’s YouTube channel<\/a> reached the threshold to become monetized, but through a generous gift match appeal supported by his classmates, and with help from Mrs. Kathy Gremse<\/strong>, the Class of 1968 has raised $4,000 for the fund! “58 years after graduation and the Class of ’68 is still stepping up for our classmate.
