On Thursday, April 16th, during a dinner and ceremony at Russo\u2019s on the Bay, Girls Swimming Coach Heather Green-Wresch <\/strong>and Girls Cross Country\/Track & Field Coach AJ Power \u201984<\/strong> were inducted into the Girls Catholic High School Athletics Association (GCHSAA) Hall of Fame!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Green-Wresch has led the Girls Swim Team for 20 years, building a legacy of excellence. During her tenure, she has achieved 12 undefeated dual meet seasons, captured 11 Dual Meet Championships, earned 11 City Championships, and has been named GCHSAA Swimming Coach of the Year six times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Power has dedicated 35 years to Molloy, including the last 25 as head coach of the Girls Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Under his leadership, the teams have won seven NYC CHSAA Championships and 38 Brooklyn\/Queens Championships. He has coached two New York State individual champions, 25 All-Americans, 73 CHSAA Individual Champions, and 25 B\/Q Individual Champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Coach Green-Wresch and Coach Power on this incredible and well-deserved honor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molloy Celebrates Annual Stanner-A-Thon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, April 17th, students and faculty participated in Molloy’s annual Stanner-A-Thon! Previously known as the Walk-A-Thon, this school-wide fundraiser supports capital projects and other important upgrades around Molloy. Projects that have been supported in the past include the full modernization of the Strength & Conditioning Center and Art Studio, the addition of air conditioning in all classrooms, the installation of new lighting and sound equipment in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater, and more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was renamed in recent years because not only does it include a walk around Briarwood for underclassmen, but seniors also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of special activities including Zumba, the Game-A-Thon, Dodgeball, Basketball Free Throw, Quiz Bowl, the Br. Leo Memorial Walk to the World Trade Center, and many more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Br. Leo Walk, honoring the memory of SMILE founder Br. Leo Richard<\/strong>, is a 12 mile walk from Molloy all the way to the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan! The walk, which first began in fall 2004, sees Stanners make their way through many different neighborhoods in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, as they enjoy spirited conversation with friends and make memories for life! This year’s walk saw over 70 seniors participate (pictured<\/em>)! Thank you to Mr. Chris Dougherty ’91<\/strong> for organizing this great tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knights of Columbus<\/strong> Award Stanners for Outstanding Essays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Christopher Elorriagia ’27<\/strong>, Angelina Fontana ’28<\/strong>, Kaitlyn Elisse Garcia ’28<\/strong>, and Isabella Lall ’29<\/strong> on winning this year’s Knights of Columbus (Juniper Valley Council) Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest! Each winner received a certificate and cash prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This contest, open to students grades 8-12, encourages today’s youth to be more connected to their community and their faith. Entrants are judged on grammar, style, and how clearly they present the theme in a way that showcases creativity, imagination, and overall development of the topic. This year’s essay theme prompted students to, in 500 to 750 words, list their three favorite popes (out of 267 throughout history) and explain why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among these four Stanners, an overall winner and one runner up will be selected by the initial judging panel and entered into additional rounds of judging by a wider council of Knights of Columbus judges. Good luck to the advancing students!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marist Brothers Host Molloy, US Province Schools at<\/strong> Sharing Our Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Earlier this spring, a group representing Molloy leadership attended Sharing Our Mission, an annual meeting hosted by the Marist Brothers at Our Lady of Florida Retreat Center in West Palm Beach. Molloy’s group was among the presidents, principals, campus ministers, religion chairs, and board members from nine USA Marist schools from around the US Province. During the meeting, US Provincial Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85<\/strong> discussed the Calls of the 2025 Marist Brothers General Chapter gathering in the Philippines. One such Call is to “promote servant and prophetic leadership through action, stepping beyond comfort, standing with the vulnerable, and being a voice of hope and courage in a wounded world.” Also discussed were updates about the use of AI in education, and global Ecology and Solidarity initiatives. The event prioritized time for each group of school leaders to network with their fellow Marist colleagues in their respective roles, as well as a day of retreat for campus ministers and religion chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was an enriching experience that reaffirmed our support of the Marist Mission here at Molloy,” said President Richard Karsten ’81<\/strong>. “We are very proud of our collective work at Molloy to nurture good Christians and good citizens of the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Br. Dan described the meeting as \u201ca meaningful time of formation, reflection, and dialogue,\u201d emphasizing that gatherings like this ensure Marist leaders continue to guide their schools as true Centers of Evangelization, fostering Champagnat\u2019s mission of \u201cmaking Jesus known and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students Receive Sacraments Through OCIA Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this year’s Easter Vigil Mass at Our Lady of Hope RC Church, six students from Molloy received their Sacraments of Initiation from pastor Fr. Peter Purpura ’99<\/strong>. Deacon John Kramer<\/strong>, a religion teacher and track coach at Molloy, was a sponsor to one of the students, while Fr. Nick Colalella<\/strong>, Molloy’s Chaplain, sponsored another student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team offered an Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) program, enabling students to become Catholic and receive their sacraments. 10 students signed up this year, with six recently receiving Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. Four more students will receive Confirmation with Bishop Robert Brennan in May. During the program, the participating students attend morning Mass each Thursday in Molloy’s Chapel, after which Fr. Colalella leads a catechism\/faith discussion to prepare them for the eventual ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Campus Ministry looks forward to welcoming more students to participate in the OCIA program in the near future!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this spring, 10 sophomores attended the Marist Mission Conference in Esopus. The goal of the program is to share how Marist students are living out our mission to \u201cMake Jesus Known and Loved\u201d in various ways around the world and within their local school communities. Students are then invited to consider how they are being called to mission and what that means in their lives. Our Stanners learned how other Marist schools are living out the mission, shared ideas and collaborated with students from the other Marist schools, and built new bonds and friendships along the way. They returned to Molloy with new ideas and fresh perspectives on how we can fully live out our Marist Mission. A very special shout out to Molloy\u2019s senior representative, Caterina R. \u201926<\/strong>, who did an amazing job sharing with the greater Marist community about the various ways Molloy is currently fulfilling our Marist Mission to \u201cMake Jesus Known and Loved!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, April 16th, alumni and friends gathered in Molloy’s recently renovated Art Studio for a special evening of Paint & Sip! Throughout the event, Molloy’s Communications Coordinator Ms. Maria Calakos ’13<\/strong> (pictured top right<\/em>) guided participants step-by-step in creating their own unique bee and flower paintings. The theme was chosen to mark the arrival of spring and to celebrate the beehive that is Molloy! As they painted alongside friends and fellow alums, guests enjoyed a variety of small bites and beverages. This event was a fun way for our community to connect, and one that we hope to grow in the future! Special thanks to Alumni Development Officer Ms. Sarah Quispe ’19<\/strong> and Ms. Calakos for organizing and leading this wonderful evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
