Stanner Players Sell Out Weekend of “Mean Girls: High School Version<\/strong>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to all Stanner Players cast and crew, and Director Shannon Winters ’06<\/strong>, who delighted audiences with a sold out weekend of “Mean Girls: High School Version!”<\/strong> Months of hard work and preparation led to “fetch” run of performances by the Stanner Players, who always give their all on stage!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mean Girls, Cady (Sofia Crino ’26<\/strong>) and her zoologist parents move from Africa to the USA, meaning Cady has to get used to life in a new environment\u2014and a new school. Along the way, Cady makes new friends in Janis (DJ O’Keeffe ’26<\/strong>) and Damian (Everett Dutton ’28<\/strong>), develops a crush on senior Aaron (Joshua Pe\u00f1a ’28<\/strong>), crosses her teacher Ms. Norbury (Sophia Krevor ’26<\/strong>), and finds herself in the constant company of everyone’s favorite “frenemies” Regina (Isabella Fortunato ’26<\/strong>), Gretchen (Jazzy Arasin ’27<\/strong>), and Karen (Katey Remon ’27<\/strong>). The story devolves into chaos, as our characters bicker, feud, and seek revenge before discovering some much-needed self-awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Winters shares, “In spite of losing a week of rehearsal due in large part to snow days, the cast and crew came together to pull off a great performance. The students put their talents on display and have shown tremendous growth from their first productions with the Stanner Players. With 16 seniors graduating, it is bittersweet, but a testament to the family that has been built and the legacy they leave behind for future Stanner Players.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Science Research and the Annual Science Symposium<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to our Stanner scientists on a successful Science Symposium on April 27th! Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Molloy\u2019s Science Research program presented to fellow classmates, as well as faculty, staff, and family members, showcasing their hard work developed over the course of one to three years. Sophomores presented their literature reviews, juniors their blueprint of their experiments, and seniors their completed research. Ms. Mary Malia<\/strong>, head of the program, says that this year Molloy hosted \u201cthe most projects the program has ever had at once!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects showcased at the Symposium ranged from Westen Lipan \u201826\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cThe Creation and Application of Electrical Propellant Pump Systems in Liquid Fuel Rocket Engines\u201d to Sameera Zaheid \u201827\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cAI-Assisted Auscultation for Pediatric Heart Murmurs.\u201d Students had the opportunity to study any topic they were interested in, with Isaac Contreras \u201827<\/strong> saying that he joined the program because he \u201chad the freedom to study any topic he wanted, to choose his own path.\u201d His own project, titled, \u201cHow Do Diet and Physical Activity Interact to Impact Cognitive Function and Development in Adolescents,\u201d attempts to prove the correlation between increased physical activity and intake of healthy food and cognitive function. Others joined the program to learn more about something that has interested them for years, such as Sameera and her research on listening to, logging, and recording abnormal heartbeats into the Automated Auscultation Diagnosis Device. Sameera hopes her research next year will \u201clessen the margin of error\u201d when diagnosing dangerous heart murmurs, as it can help families both emotionally and financially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to our Band, Freshman Chorus, String Ensemble, and Junior\/Senior Chorus, who inspired audiences on back to back nights during our annual Spring Concerts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On night one, the Band, Freshman Chorus, and String Ensemble took centerstage under the direction of music teacher Mr. Daniel Jones<\/strong>. The Band played popular music and jazz-inspired tunes including songs by Dave Brubeck Quartet, the Backstreet Boys, Michael Jackson, The Police, and Phil Collins. The Freshman Chorus slowed things down, covering soul artists including Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Roberta Flack. The String Ensemble bridged the Band and Chorus by performing classical selections by Joe Hisaishi, Hans Zimmer, and Josh Groban. As a special treat, the Molloy chapter of Mr. Jones’s D-LIMITZ Drum Band delivered a high-energy performance to welcome the audience back from the intermission. Overall, it was a wonderful evening of music performed by many talented Stanners!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Night two featured Molloy’s impeccable Junior\/Senior Chorus as well as the MultiQuire! The Spring Concert serves as an opportunity for the Junior\/Senior Chorus, led by director Mr. Jim Sheehan ’75<\/strong>, to present a wide variety of more difficult pieces. Selections range from Broadway tunes, to popular music, to standards, and even a Beatles medley. Many students also performed solos and duets, showcasing the range of our many talented choral singers! Mr. Ken Farnum Jr.<\/strong>, our frequent Chorus accompanist, directed the MultiQuire during Act 2. The MultiQuire featured choral singers from Molloy as well as Maria Regina High School and Fordham Prep. Thank you to Mr. Sheehan and Mr. Farnum, and congratulations to our Junior\/Senior Chorus and the MultiQuire for another outstanding concert!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to the winners of the Seventh Annual William F. DiPietra Photography Exhibition! The William F. DiPietra Foundation, created by Helen DiPietra<\/strong> in memory of her son William DiPietra \u201994<\/strong>, celebrates his passion for media arts through awards presented at institutions that were meaningful to him, including Molloy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18 members of Molloy\u2019s Photography Club participated in the exhibition this year, submitting photos on a theme of their choice. Helen says that the photos submitted all received \u201chigh praise from the judges,\u201d with every judge being \u201cgenuinely impressed.\u201d She says to our Stanners, \u201cYou should be proud of the work you created, and I hope you will display your work whenever you can. Thank you for contributing your beautiful work to an exhibition that means so much!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to Dr. Darius Penikas<\/strong>, who was honored at St. John\u2019s University’s Leaders in Education (LEAD) Awards Dinner! Serving as Molloy\u2019s principal since 2015, Dr. Penikas earned his bachelor\u2019s degree and M.A.T. in Social Studies from Binghamton University, as well as his M.S. in Educational Administration, School Building Leadership Certification, Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership, and Ed.D. from St. John\u2019s University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Penikas has played a key role in shaping Molloy into the technologically advanced institution it is today. He has overseen the development of new departments and courses, along with the growth of clubs and programs that support a well-rounded student experience. His leadership has enhanced both the school\u2019s academic rigor and its commitment to innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The awards dinner, which took place on April 16th, was \u201ca truly memorable and meaningful experience,\u201d according to Dr. Penikas. He elaborates, \u201cReceiving the St. John\u2019s University LEAD Award is a great honor and a testament to the wonderful team I have the pleasure of working with at Molloy. Eliminating Food Waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

On April 27th, CulinArt, the food service provider of Archbishop Molloy High School, made a presentation about nutrition and food waste during each lunch period. In an effort to reduce food waste, CulinArt have implemented a program called “Root to Stem.” Peter Witkowski<\/strong>, CEO, Ms. Stephanie Dorfman<\/strong>, Director of Nutrition and Wellness, and Mr. Jason Gouskos<\/strong>, Food Service Director, explained how CulinArt has embraced “root-to-stem” cooking as a core sustainability initiative, aimed at reducing food waste by utilizing the entire plant, including edible roots, stems, leaves, and peels\u2014in their culinary offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event, coming directly off the Marist Province Ecology Weekend, emphasized the Marist commitment to Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si’ (Care for our Common Home). On an Earth Day virtual call, the Marist Superior General, Br. Peter Caroll reminded all global Marists that “the time to act is now.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanner Athletes of the Week 4\/20-4\/26<\/strong> – Varsity softball player Diem Nenadich ’27<\/strong> had an all-around standout week, recording 2 triples, driving in 2 runs, stealing home, and turning 2 double plays in the infield. The junior has already committed to Hofstra University and is on the verge of a historic milestone at Molloy, closing in on 100 career stolen bases (currently at 91)! She has also tallied 96 runs scored and 82 hits lifetime. | Varsity baseball player Liam Brower ’26<\/strong> was dominant on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout to lead the Stanners to a 1-0 victory over Cardinal Hayes. On Saturday, April 25th, Molloy hosted its 4th Annual Stanner Players Alumni Reception! Alumni enjoyed catching up with friends and former castmates in the library before taking their VIP seats in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater to watch the sold-out performance of “Mean Girls: High School Version!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This annual event offers alumni of the Stanner Players and Theater Arts & Improv Club a wonderful opportunity to see friends, make new connections, and support the current Players. It has become a beloved tradition by both alumni and current members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just so nice to see all the alumni come back for the Stanner Players Saturday show,\u201d said Joshua Pe\u00f1a \u201928<\/strong>, who played Aaron Samuels in the musical. \u201cIt shows us how strong our family really is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sofia Crino ’26<\/strong>, who played Cady Heron in the show, shared her favorite night of the Spring Musical is the Saturday performance. \u201cI love seeing all the alumni come back, because they bring so much energy and it always hypes us up!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 30 alumni attended, filling the first few rows of the theater. Many alumni were also directly involved in the production, including Taylor Garcia-Lawson \u201919<\/strong>, Mr. Dan O\u2019Reilly \u201914<\/strong>, Erin Mardenborough \u201920<\/strong>, Tatiana Egas \u201922<\/strong>, Krystal Valentin \u201925<\/strong>, Mr. Chris Autera \u201916<\/strong>, and of course, Ms. Shannon Winters \u201906<\/strong>, our amazing director!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you to all who made this evening possible, and congratulations to the Stanner Players and Ms. Winters! We look forward to seeing our theater alumni again next year for the 2027 spring musical! 🎭<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We pray for the repose of the soul of Michael P. Smith II ’67<\/strong>, who passed away on April 4, 2026 after an extended illness. After graduating from St. John Fisher College in 1971, Michael pursued and achieved his dream of becoming a naval officer. He earned a second bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from University of Michigan and then attended the Naval Academy in Newport, Rhode Island, specializing in surface fleet and maritime operations. He loved working on ships and his international tours. He later earned a master’s degree in engineering and mathematics from Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Michael retired from the U.S. Navy in 1986 as a lieutenant and continued his work for the Navy with his dissertation research for a doctorate at Virginia Tech. He later worked as an engineer at the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Maryland.
