The current School Directory is listed below:<\/p>\n Thank you to all who serve on Molloy\u2019s School Directory for the time and efforts you dedicate to aiding Stanners during their journey through the Marist Tradition.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n A group of Stanners got together at Manhattan\u2019s Still Bar (3rd Avenue between 17th & 18th Street) on Friday, May 18th for a special alumni happy hour. The event, forged largely due to the efforts of Steve Bisciello \u201895<\/strong> and Daniel Moore \u201995<\/strong>, saw alumni from many different years stop by to reminisce and catch up over a some drinks for a few hours. As the evening moved along, several alumni voiced their interest in organizing more happy hour events in the near future. With a great turnout the first time around, we hope to be able to bring you news of the next great happy hour soon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Stephanie Olcese \u201912<\/strong> and Nicole Marino \u201912<\/strong> studied the effects of Clorox, Green Works, and Grapefruit Seed Extract on S.M. Bacteria. Their findings suggested that Clorox is the safest cleaner to use as it resulted in no change to the bacteria. Grapefruit Seed Extract mutated the specimen during experimentation, proving it to be the most harmful substance.\u201cThis is the real stuff,\u201d says science teacher Mr. Michael Nadeau<\/strong>. \u201cWe only have so much time to teach all kinds of information throughout the year, but this is what science is really about. This is a chance for students to step out of the curriculum and conduct real research that can be relevant to everyday life.\u201d Other seniors to present included: Maverick Alzate<\/strong> and Christina John<\/strong> (Reflectivity vs. Insolation), Kevin Byrne <\/strong>(Reaction Time of Athletes vs. Non Athletes), Wilfrido Castillo<\/strong> and Sim Mangat<\/strong> (Effect of Time on Studying), Melissa Hernandez<\/strong> (Does Staphylococcus Epidermidis Grow in Bottled Water?), Jennifer Hwu<\/strong> (Correlation Between SAT Scores and IQ), J.P. Meyer<\/strong> (Is it Beneficial to Coat Medical Tablets?), and Stephanie Rupe<\/strong> (Lucid Dreaming).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Register Online Now!<\/a> On Saturday, June 9th<\/sup>, from 1pm \u2013 5pm, Stanners families and friends (of legal drinking age) are invited once again to come out to the award-winning Diliberto Winery<\/a> in lovely Jamesport, Long Island for a day of wine, food, entertainment and more. Last year our Day at the Vineyard had a great turnout and received rave reviews from Stanners and friends who were not only impressed by the quality of the wine, but the gourmet local food selections as well. These great offerings, combined with good company and beautiful weather, will provide nothing short of a stellar day. Sal \u201963<\/strong> and Maryann Diliberto <\/strong>are expert winemakers who display their heritage everyday through their Italian red wines and their impressive accommodations, and they would be thrilled to have you visit their vineyard on June 9th<\/sup>. We look forward to having you join us on this special day!<\/p>\n Julia Rosa \u201912<\/strong> is the first graduating recipient of Katy\u2019s scholarship. Julia was excited to receive the honor, but also very humbled. Julia\u2019s sister Brianne \u201908<\/strong> was friends with Katy at Molloy, which brought the tragedy closer to home for the Rosas. Julia was saddened at the time of Katy\u2019s passing, and after receiving the scholarship, Julia wanted to prove herself worthy of it. \u201cI wanted to get as involved as possible, so I joined Marist Youth, SMILE, NHS, and Chorus,\u201d explained Julia. \u201cI have also been dedicated to track for 4 years.\u201d Julia is looking forward to attending SUNY Oneonta to study the business of music in September. She is grateful for the opportunity she was given at Molloy, and believes that Katy\u2019s scholarship will continue to help other kids. \u201cThis scholarship will help jumpstart a student like it did for me. Other recipients should become as active as possible and keep Katy in their hearts even if they never met her.\u201d The Katy Grogan Scholarship Walk-A-Thon will begin at 6:00pm with food and drinks to follow at 8:00pm at the Knights of Columbus (35-30 Bell Blvd, 718.428.4457). <\/a>The School Directory recently wrapped up its final meeting of the year with two primary goals reached. First, the operating budget for the 2012-13 school year was approved by the School Directory. The approved budget addresses those line items that sustain excellence in the quality of academics and athletics as well as the annual maintenance of Molloy’s 55 year old physical plant. Second, tuition for each student was determined to be $7,840. Molloy President Richard Karsten \u201981<\/strong> was pleased with the outcome of the meeting. \u201cTuition was only raised $160 per student because of efficiencies built into our infrastructure, our solid financial position, and the generous support of our alumni,\u201d said Karsten. \u201cThat is a 2% increase despite costs rising across the board each year.” Molloy’s tuition remains one of the lowest in the Brooklyn\/Queens Diocese.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\nCHSAA Hall of Fame Awards Dinner<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/a>The CHSAA has honored many Stanners in its Hall of Fame over the years. Kevin Joyce ’69<\/strong>, Brian Winters<\/strong> ’70<\/strong>, York Larese<\/strong> ’56<\/strong>, and coach Frank Rienzo<\/strong> are amongst its most prominent members. Now another Stanner sits alongside these legendary New York sports figures: Jim Larranaga \u201967<\/strong>. Larranaga was also recently inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame, which the Miami coach attended along with fellow hall of fame legends Lou Carnesecca \u201843<\/strong> and Jack Curran<\/strong>. With this latest induction, Larranaga\u2019s career has come full circle. He now stands alongside Curran, his former coach, in several distinguished halls of fame in New York. As a sports professional, Larranaga has done it all. He coached freshman basketball at the age of 14 and played for Curran\u2019s Varsity team at Molloy. Larranaga endeared himself to Curran early on, so much so that he earned the nickname \u201cLarry\u201d from Coach. The Varsity star went on to play at Providence and became the university\u2019s fifth all-time leading scorer. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 1971 before deciding to pursue his true passion \u2013 coaching. Larranaga has since coached to an overall record of 470-334 and has earned several Coach of the Year awards. He garnered national recognition during the 2005-06 season when he brought George Mason to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament \u2013 a distinction many did not predict that team would earn.<\/p>\n<\/a>Although Larranaga was unable to attend his induction, good friend John Carey \u201966<\/strong> and Coach Curran were on hand to accept the honor on his behalf. Carey, also a member of the CHSAA Hall of Fame, was thrilled to share a speech prepared by Larranaga. In Larranaga\u2019s words, Carey spoke, \u201cJohn Carey first invited me to try out for a scholarship at Molloy in 1962\u2026and any success I have experienced as a college coach can be directly related to all the things I learned from Coach Curran at Molloy. I can never repay him for all he has done for me. I remember in my senior year after a particularly lopsided win, he told me how great Kevin Joyce and Bryan Adrian were. After 20 minutes of glorifying my teammates, he said \u2018Larry, you did ok.\u2019\u201d Larranaga\u2019s speech went on to thank the CHSAA for the honor. \u201cI believe the CHSAA is the best high school basketball league in the country, and I am proud to be a small part of its great tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Second Annual Science Symposium<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/a>Molloy students always remain very active after school even though the year might be winding down. It should then be no surprise that a number of seniors participated in the Second Annual Science Symposium with just days left in their high school careers. The Science Research Program educates students in the fundamentals of scientific inquiry, encouraging them to \u201cthink outside the box.\u201d Speaking of fundamentals, the question \u201cwhy\u201d is at the forefront of what many scientists do, and stanners truly gain a sense of wonder through this program. The Science Symposium is an opportunity for students conducting research to present their findings to classmates, administration and faculty. Many of the participating seniors hope to continue their scientific studies as they move on to college in just a few months.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe Stanner\u201d Brings Home Hardware<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/a>The Stanner newspaper has had a long tradition of excellence here at Molloy. Greeting students each month, the paper has covered student interest stories, Molloy sports and more since 1957 (it was previously known as The Beehive at St. Ann’s). This year the editing staff, lead by Editor-in-Chief Monish Pahilajani ’13<\/strong>, enjoyed top billing at the High School Press Award presented by the Brooklyn Diocesan newspaper, The Tablet. Facing off against 8 other Catholic schools, The Stanner won 10 awards in total including 6 first place titles. While an incredible achievement, it is nothing new for The Stanner, which also won Best Newspaper last year. President Richard Karsten ’81, who was The Stanner’s Editor-in-Chief in 1980-81 commented, “After many years, it is exciting for me to see that The Stanner remains a great tradition at Molloy.” We could elaborate, but perhaps it would be best if the editors behind The Stanner explained for themselves. \nFourth Annual Shakespeare Festival<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/a>After a successful run with Oklahoma!<\/strong><\/em> in March, the Stanner Players have kept very busy in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater. Most recently the Players presented the 4th<\/sup> Annual Shakespeare Festival, a montage of monologues, scenes, songs and dances paying homage to the English playwright. The Players took on the roles of villagers (pictured performing a “Peasant Dance”) in the fictional town of \u201cStannershire\u201d and performed in the spirit, language and physical styling of Shakespeare\u2019s writing. Monologues drew from such works as Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Othello and King Leer while songs included The Whistling Gypsy, Return of the King, Rose Round, and Searching for the Sheep.<\/p>\n
\nSports Update<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
<\/a>Over the course of her Molloy career, Kathleen Woods \u201912 <\/strong>has entered the school\u2019s record books time and time again, solidifying herself as one of the top athletes in the history of the school. Kathleen\u2019s latest achievement, and one of her last as an athlete at Molloy, was being named the Outstanding Performer at the CHSAA Girls Brooklyn-Queens Sectional Championships at Ichan Stadium. Coach A.J. Power\u2019s best runner logged a time of 7 minutes, 41.3 seconds during the 2,000-meter steeplechase and 11:18.5 in the 3,200-meter to win the championship for Molloy. Congratulations as well to the Varsity softball team for winning the City Championship on May 30th and the JV softball team for winning the Diocesan Championship on May 23rd<\/sup>. \n5th Annual Katy Grogan Scholarship Walk-A-Thon<\/strong><\/h3>\n
<\/a>On Wednesday, June 6th members of the Stanner community are invited to attend an event helping future Molloy students in the memory of Kaitlyn Maureen Grogan<\/strong>. Katy was a wonderful person. She excelled in academics and athletics and held many friendships at Molloy. Sadly on February 15th, 2008, Katy was killed in a tragic automobile accident while on a trip in Florida. Just 18 years old, Katy\u2019s smile lifted all those around her. Even now her spirit continues to brighten people\u2019s lives through the Katy Grogan Scholarship Fund, which grants deserving students from Sacred Heart of Jesus Grammar School (Katy\u2019s other alma mater) the opportunity to attend Molloy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\nClass Updates<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n
