Br. Ron was a graduate of St. Ann’s Academy, Class of 1952, and a beloved teacher and guidance counselor at Molloy. He used his love of music and other methods to teach “outside the box” and help students to realize their full potential. Br. Ron did his best to relate to students and help them deal with the problems that many teens face. He was known to find freshmen who were “lost in the shuffle” and help them graduate as seniors with a strong sense of confidence and responsibility. Sadly, the Molloy community lost Br. Ron after he valiantly battled cancer. Alumni and friends come together each year to honor and remember his legacy at this outstanding event. Proceeds from the admission price and raffle tickets offer financial assistance to a student either currently enrolled at or entering into Archbishop Molloy High School, and also provide funding to ensure the mental health and well-being of a student. Register Online or purchase admission of $40 at the door during the event. Raffle Tickets are $20.00 each and may be purchased online through January 15th or at the event. Those in attendance chatted over delicious salads, sandwiches and other selections prepared by the courteous Bridie’s staff. A particularly interesting facet of this event turned out to be the presence of not only members of the recent Class of 2012, but also Mr. John Plump, St. Ann’s Class of 1945. This diversity helped facilitate unique conversations during what proved to be a great afternoon. The Luncheon was planned largely due to the volunteer work of several members of Molloy’s Women’s Alumnae Network, specifically the efforts of Carissa Jordan, Jessica Petschauer, and Ashley Regazzi – all members of Molloy’s first graduating coed class, the Class of 2004. These dedicated alums, as well as others amongst the Women’s Network, hold a strong connection to Molloy, and they wish to share and build that connection with other young alumni. As such, the Women’s Network hosted this luncheon with great pleasure, and after receiving much positive feedback, their plans for more events later this year are in the works.

Sports Updates

Lifting the Spirits of the Team

Following Hurricane Sandy, several members of Molloy’s Cross Country track team continue to suffer from the lingering effects of the storm including loss of property. Team Captain Dylan Scibelli ’13, searching for a way to help his teammates, approached Alumni Development Director Craig Katinas ’93 and asked if there was anything that could be done to help lift their spirits. Craig immediately took the opportunity to reach out to Tom Ratcliffe of KIMbia. Tom acts as the agent for several high profile runners that hold membership in the Oregon Track Club, one of the premiere running clubs in the world. Teammates Raymond Henry ’14, Patrick Cashin ’14 and Thomas Mercer ’13, of course, are big fans of this club and its elite athletes. With this in mind, Tom arranged for autographed shirts to be delivered to Molloy for Dylan’s teammates. Amazingly, the shirts were signed by not 1, but 5 stellar runners including Evan Jager, Shalane Flanagan, German Fernandez, Andrew Bumbalough and Chris Solinsky. Dylan’s teammates were thrilled to receive the shirts, and all look forward to working together for a successful remainder of the Cross Country season.

Team Performances

As we check in on our Stanner squads mid-season, all are doing exceptionally well. Basketball season is in full swing here at Molloy, with each team proving their mettle. The Boys Varsity team has worked to a solid 7-3 record, (751-609 point differential). We wish congratulations to the Boys Varsity B basketball team, who won the Matthew Giannuzzi Tournament at Holy Cross for the 3rd straight year. This accomplishment is a first in the 14 year history of the tournament. In addition, the Varsity B team is a stunning 11-0 this season. Similar to the Varsity team, the JV Boys team has earned a solid 7-3 record. The Boys Freshman team is also doing very well, posting a 7-1 record with several tight wins in their most recent contests. The Girls Varsity basketball team is playing great. They have put up a 9-1 record and some very big wins over tough opponents. The girls JV basketball team has also worked to a great record of 5-1 so far.

Class Updates

Mr. Chris Dougherty ’91 recently got together with several of his former classmates over Christmas break. In establishing these skills, Chris has studied writing and poetry abroad in St. Petersburg and Barcelona. “I have grown a lot as a poet and linguist,” says Chris. “I would like to think my poems and command of language have gotten better as well. I’ve been consistently writing poems in all these languages.” Several of Chris’ poems have been published in the Lehman Journal and some in the literary journal Rascacielos. In total, Chris has penned over 150 poems to date. In addition to his writing, Chris spends a great deal of time translating languages, including his thesis project translating Russian Poet Alexander Blok to English.
