On October 28th, we celebrated the 209th anniversary of St. Marcellin Champagnat's encounter with the dying boy, Jean-Baptist Montagne. During his visit with the 12 year old Montagne, Marcellin was horrified that the child had no religious education and did not even know of God. After this incident, Marcellin pledged he would dedicate his life to educating as many children as he could and ensure that they felt, "seen, known, and loved." Read more about the story of Champagnat and Montagne.
Fast forward to 2025 and the Marist Institute has kept this pledge by running schools in 82 countries and counting! As a matter of fact, Molloy recently organized a fundraiser for a Marist school in Venezuela. The money raised will go a long way not only for educational needs but for food and other survival needs. If you have a moment, please watch this thank you video by the USA Marist Provincial, Br. Dan O'Riordan '85 with his counterpart in Venezuela. In it, they explain exactly what the work is and how the contributions help make that work happen.
Despite the 209 years from Montagne's death until now, the Marist presence and grace today is true to Marcellin's dream.
