Power of Presence
Attending a Marist school provides students with a sense of service, simplicity, family and friendship. These ideals, while inspiring, are more-so when they can be seen and felt. To truly unite the vision of St. Marcellin Champagnat with the formation of the individual, the Marist Brothers began Marist Youth, a program dedicated to introducing students, faculty and staff of Marist schools to the mission of Champagnat on a much deeper level. The program launched in 2001 and has since grown into a international gathering of students from Marist Schools all across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The major event is a wonderful extension of the Marist Youth clubs that exist within each Marist School. By participating in this program throughout the year, students are able to further incorporate Marist heritage and values into their lives both in school and at home. This year, the gathering took place over Memorial Day weekend at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Roughly 300 students from Marist schools, including Archbishop Molloy High School, came together to learn and grow together as one family in their Marist faith.
2012’s theme “Power of Presence” commemorated 125 years of Marist Brothers in the United States, as well as shared with students, faculty and staff what it means to be Catholic and Marist in today’s world. This was achieved through workshop presentations by the Marist Brothers in addition to discussion and reflection groups, social and community building events as well as various games and activities. Part of the program also included an evening prayer service at the final resting place of many important Marist Brothers including Br. Zephiriny. In an inspirational prayer service on Saturday evening, the names of 48 Brothers were read aloud and a candle was lit for each one. Part of the weekend involved a dose of nostalgia too, as the history of all the Marist schools represented at the gathering were on display in a special presentation on the Marist College campus. Of course, two of the featured schools were St. Ann’s and Molloy, both of which included some very unique photos showcasing the versatility of the Brothers over the years as well as the enthusiasm of Stanners.
In a press release, U.S. Provincial Br. Ben Consigli ’80 said, “It was a beautiful weekend at Marist College – we couldn’t be more thrilled. We were blessed to have the opportunity to celebrate our 125-year U.S. heritage with such a diverse population of Marist youth in attendance.” There is indeed power in the numbers as the Marist Brothers were encouraged by the charism shone by all those in attendance – particularly the students who were given groups of their own peers to lead. Serving as role models, these leaders were able to relate their experiences in Marist faith to other students in hopes that they can do the same for others in the coming years. Br. Dominick Pujia, heavily involved in the planning of this event, observed comments from one student. “One young person told me, ‘I never realized my school was part of a bigger reality called Marist. I am ready to work to carry this forward.’ If our young people moved beyond the confines of their particular schools and connected with a greater reality, one which reaches across this nation and the world, then the Marist Youth Gathering was a rousing success.” Br. Dominick believes the participating students, as well as many others in Marist schools, are ready to live the Marist vision today and carry it forward for future generations to come.
A Marist Jubilee
As 2012 marks the 125th Anniversary of the Marist Brothers educating young men and women in the United States. A multitude of schools across the nation have been built and sustained by the Brothers in an effort to instill generations of individuals with the mission of St. Marcellin Champagnat. To acknowledge this wonderful milestone, the Brothers celebrated a Jubilee Mass at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, New York. The Mass also served as a way to acknowledge milestone anniversaries for individual Brothers including several associated with Molloy. Br. Patrick McNulty, former teacher at St. Ann’s and Molloy, is celebrating his 60th anniversary as a Marist Brother while Br. Gerald Doherty and Br. John Raeihle ’61 are each celebrating their 50th anniversaries. Br. Gerald currently serves on Molloy’s School Directory while Br. John has been a teacher and retreat coordinator at Molloy since 1979. Celebrating his 25th anniversary is Marist Provincial Br. Ben Consigli ’80, who attended the Mass with many of his fellow Brother Jubilarians. Principal Br. Thomas Schady and President Richard Karsten ’81 were both proud to attend the Mass in representing Molloy, as was the Archbishop Molloy High School Choir who performed many of the musical arrangements (with several Class of 2012 alumni contributing). Congratulations to all of the Marist Brothers, and thank you for educating Stanners for over 125 years.
Lunch with Commissioner Ray Kelly ’59
Every year, NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, class of 1959, offers his time to Archbishop Molloy High School through a special auction at the Stanner Golf Classic. This past year was no different, as lunch with Commissioner Kelly was again auctioned off to the highest bidder. This year’s winner was Justin Flanagan ’90, who jumped at the opportunity to have this special luncheon at the Harvard Club in Manhattan. Justin brought brothers Matt ’85 and Rich ’84, Richard Flanagan Sr., and friend John McGrath ’85 along to meet the Commissioner. If you are interested in having lunch with Commissioner Kelly, you’ll just have to attend the 27th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic on Monday, May 6th, 2013 and place the winning bid!

25th Anniversary Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run
by Frank Gambino ‘74
REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED. On Sunday morning, October 7th, 2012, Archbishop Molloy High School will host its 25th annual Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run. In 1997 the race was renamed in memory of Andrew Harvey, a beloved Molloy student and track athlete. We are hoping for a record number of participants at this year’s milestone event. One goal of ours is to have at least one alumnus from each of the last 25 years entered in this run. We have a collection of shirts from previous races and we’d like to take a commemorative picture of 25 people wearing these shirts. We will also be taking a picture of all race participants to commemorate this event. So please mark the date on your calendars. We hope to see you here at Molloy on October 7th.
Non scholae sed vitae
Throughout the year, we often reference the service work students put in after school at Molloy and around the local community. We would be remiss if we didn’t highlight one individual in particular: Melissa Gabriel ’12. If the yearbook still listed activities under each student’s photo, Melissa might need her own page. She has seemingly been involved with every facet of school life over the course of her high school career. She has participated in Yearbook, Photography, Chorus, Band, Pipes and Drums, Theater Arts & Improv, the Stanner Players and so much more. She also ran Track for 4 years, which would be an important element of her Molloy experience. Melissa has always been the first person to jump at any volunteer opportunity around the school – even helping out at alumni events. Her photos and videos (did we mention she is an editing enthusiast?) have appeared in The Beehive numerous times in the past 2 years, including photos from Stanner Games, Stanner Player productions and more. It seems there is little that Melissa can’t do, and so it is no surprise that she was accepted into the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Melissa has always wanted to go into at least one of the military academies because she truly loves the idea of service. “It’s important to me, and I felt I wanted to go somewhere I would be doing a lot of service to myself and other people…and I’ve always wanted to defend my country.” Her initial training will involve obstacle courses in Jack’s Valley – the “fun stuff” as she calls it. She will earn a Bachelor’s of Science degree through the four year program, after which she will be obligated for 10 years of service (5 active and 5 non-active). Melissa is a bit nervous as her departure looms, but she is also light-hearted about what she faces. “My running joke is I’ve been disciplined at Molloy for coming in late, not having the right uniform, having spray-painted hair for the play, and not meeting the dress code. Molloy has been training me for this all along.” Melissa also acknowledged that the Track team helped her to get in shape, which is crucial when joining the Air Force Academy. “My first day is June 28th. That’s when I start getting yelled at,” laughed Melissa.
Class Updates
Tom F. Sarosy ’63 & Damon Puyat ’63 are already hard at work assembling the Class of 1963 for their 50th Anniversary reunion In 2013. According to Tom and Damon, a unique fact about the Class of ’63 is that they were 2 of 8 Stanners that all went to the first grade in St. Ann’s Academy. To be together for that long – and in the same institution – is truly amazing, and all the more reason to reunite at Molloy in 2013. The 8 Stanners include Tom, Damon, Steve Sirmon, Jay Jones, Joseph Fitzpatrick, Vincent McArdle, Ernest Liebre, and James Gallagher (deceased). If there are any interested alumni willing to get involved in Tom and Damon’s effort, please contact the Stanner Alumni Center at (718) 441-9210.
Marc Garlasco ’88 (pictured right) recently had an op-ed in the Washington Post in which he discusses NATO’s decision to ignore civilian casualties as an important discussion during their May review of the war in Libya. Garlasco’s credentials are prominent, having headed the UN Protection of Civilians office in Afghanistan in 2011. He has also worked as a senior military adviser for the Human Right’s Council’s Independent Commission of Inquiry on Libya. Read Marc’s Commentary
Stephen Schaefer ‘76 was interviewed by the Cape Code Times in reference to the original song he wrote and recorded called “We’re Going to the Cape”. “With summer approaching, I hope this song, and interview, gets you in the mood for summer,” says Stephen. Talking about his musical roots always makes Stephen recall the Molloy “Concert” in 1976, which he participated in with good friend Gary Colter ‘76 and many other talented Stanner musicians. Stephen sends many blessings to all in the Stanner Family.
We are saddened to share news that Enzo Togneri ’58 has passed away. Having graduated in 1958, Enzo attended both St. Ann’s Academy and Molloy. Enzo was an NYPD consultant and a member of the Teacher Brothers Review Board. He was 71 years old. Please say a prayer for Enzo and his family.
We were informed by the family of Richard Reilly ‘71 that Richard passed away on May 19th, 2012 at age 58. Richard was one of 5 brothers to graduate in the 1970s, including John ’70, Charles ’76, Thomas ’77 and James ’79. The following is drawn from Richard’s obituary: “Richard was born on September 5, 1953 in Washington Heights, NY, the fourth of seven children of the late John F. and Margaret E. (Higgins) Reilly. He spent his latter youth in Queens Village graduating from Archbishop Molloy High School in 1971. Richard also graduated from State University of New York at Oswego in 1975 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. Richard’s career included 15+ years at North Shore LIJ Health System attaining the position of Deputy Executive Director of Administration. Rich was highly regarded and respected by his peers and co-workers. Richard was proud of the fact that North Shore-LIJ at Syosset Hospital repeatedly earned the highest ratings from JD Powers and Associates regarding quality of care, professionalism of staff and cleanliness of the facilities.
