Download Molloy’s 2012-13 Annual Report
The Stanner Alumni Center shares its Annual Report for the 2012-13 fiscal year with the Molloy community. The Annual Report affords Molloy the opportunity to thank those who have so generously given to Archbishop Molloy High School in support of its scholarship program. Your gifts to The Fund For Molloy, named scholarships, and events throughout each year help many deserving, talented students attend or remain enrolled at Molloy. Your support also enables Molloy to upgrade its buildings and grounds, allowing our school to offer the best facilities and learning tools for Stanners to succeed not for school, but for life. Molloy is stronger because of your commitment and dedication to its mission, and we extend our sincerest thanks to all the members of our community who supported Molloy during the 2012-13 fiscal year, and who continue to show their care to our students each and every day. Molloy’s Class of 2014 Earns Over $40 Million in Competitive College Scholarships
On Sunday, June 8th, Molloy’s 122nd commencement ceremony for the Class of 2014 took place at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College. What seemed like a lifetime of memories, beginning when the Class of 2014 first entered Molloy four years ago, has already come and gone so fast. These new alumni will now look ahead to build on what they’ve learned at Molloy, to act out their Marist Charism, and to make an impact on the world in extraordinary ways. They are the leaders of tomorrow we so often refer to.
As the commencement ceremony began, Principal Br. Thomas Schady took the podium. “Graduates, we are here to celebrate your accomplishments, recognize your outstanding academic ability, to thank you for the almost infinite hours you have devoted to extracurricular and athletic activities, and to thank you for the man hours of committed and dedicated service that you offered those in need over the last four years. You have indeed become emblematic of the Molloy motto – Not for school but for life.” Br. Thomas continued, encouraging our graduates to live according to their own convictions, and not those dictated by popular culture. “Simple kindness, an engaging smile, a listening ear, are all inconsequential as the world judges, but when lived by you or me are powerful antidotes to the dominant culture that glorifies the individual – at the expensive of someone or something. Make up your mind that you do not wish to live this way…Generosity is the door to a real happiness that does not disappoint.”
Salutatorian Kristian Mosquito ’14 addressed his peers during the ceremony. “We could not have reached this point in our lives without the help of others. Our trials, our goals, and most importantly, our dreams, our metaphorical kites, took flight with left from faculty, family, and friends.” Kristian continued. “As we look to the future, one thing is certain: life doesn’t just blow breezes of blessings; it also offers squalls of sorrows. For the most part, we graduates personally know only some of the tearing twisters of life. Though we may have experienced our own failures, our own losses, even our own hurricanes, we should not expect that the worst is past nor should we intend to avoid stormy seas. Instead, let us endure wind, rain, and tempest. Let us face our fears armed with our life lessons and experiences. And let us stress perseverance in times of distress and adversity.”
Valedictorian Samantha Sattler ‘14 then took center stage. “Rather than hoping to leave [Molloy], many of us have spent our final days lingering, trying to stay Stanner a little bit longer.” Samantha then encouraged her classmates to not fear tomorrow. “We are part of a generation that is – unfortunately – associated with indifference and ignorance. Those judging on a micro, rather than a macro, level claim we are more concerned with ‘selfies’ than self-worth. But at Molloy we have ‘grown up’ with innovative, conscious, and compassionate people – people who defy that fallacious label. As the initiators and deliverers of tomorrow, we must not fear the future, but invent it. We must not avoid inconvenience, but brave it. We must not wish for luck, but make our own. We must not wait for dreams, but forge them.”

The Class of 2014 made their mark at Molloy and on their own futures, with 100% attending college and earning Regents diplomas. 90% of the Class of 2014 enrolled in college credit courses offered by Molloy over the past four years, and 80% won college scholarships from a wide range of prestigious universities across the country. These scholarships totaled approximately $40 million, which is truly an impressive feat and a credit to the hard work these young men and women put in at Molloy. Our Stanners earned acceptance into schools including Boston College, University of Chicago, Amherst College, Johns Hopkins University, Fordham University, Cornell, Geneseo, Villanova, Seton Hall, Muhlenberg, Marist College, Colgate University, NYU Polytechnic, Loyola Maryland, Pratt Institute, St. John’s University, and many more. This is an exceptional list, and Molloy’s faculty and staff could not be more proud of the Class of 2014 – in particular our college guidance counselors, who worked hard with each student one-on-one to find the right college fit for them.
In order to complete their journey through Molloy, the Class of 2014 returned to Manton Street one more time together on Monday, June 9th to enjoy their Graduation Breakfast. The newest batch of Stanner alumni shared this meal together, reminisced, signed yearbooks, smiled, wished each other well, thanked their teachers, and eventually departed. They were reminded before they left, however, that their first class reunion would take place in just five years time. Despite moving on to college, and preparing for the challenges ahead, they will always have Molloy to call home. They will always be welcomed back with open arms, and so we hope they will continue their celebrations and know that this day was not the last time they will all be together!

Bill Niklaus ’80 Inducted into CHSAA Hall of Fame
On May 29th, Bill Niklaus ’80 was inducted into the prestigious CHSAA Hall of Fame for his outstanding work as one of the most passionate and skilled golf coaches in New York City. Niklaus has compiled a 259-41 record as a coach over the past 25 years while also coaching Archbishop Molloy High School’s golf team to over 23 playoff appearances. Under his guidance, Molloy’s Varsity “A” team has won twice in six visits to the city championships, as well as one Metro Bowl Championship and 13 consecutive divisional titles. Coach Niklaus’ ability to bring out the best in his players is unmatched, and he is able to do it amidst his many other responsibilities around the league. He has served as the Golf Chairman since 1992, and started the first Intersectional Golf Championship between the Long Island CHSAA and NYC CHSAA (1993-1997), and started the NYS CHSAA State Championship (1998-Present), which he has acted as director for going on 16 years. He also founded the NYC Metro Bowl in 1991, and later the NYS Federation Golf Championship in 2000. He became the coordinator of the federation championship the same year and remains in that position today. Coach Niklaus and Varsity “A” were the first team from the CHSAA to participate in the Palmetto National High School Championships in Myrtle Beach, and placed as high as 3rd in 2007. Most recently, Coach Niklaus was honored to be named the NYC Parks Foundation’s Golf Director in 2010.
These accomplishments speak to not only his coaching abilities, but his motivation to expand the game of golf among young people in NYC. Joining Coach Niklaus during the induction ceremony were many of his family and friends, including colleagues and alumni from Molloy. In addition, Coach Niklaus finds himself among some very good company in the CHSAA Hall of Fame alongside other great Molloy alumni and coaches including Jack Curran, Lou Carnesecca ’43, Frank Rienzo, Andy Kostel, Br. Bob Andrews, John Carey ‘66, Joe Dombrowski, Br. Pat Hogan, Kevin Joyce ’69, Tom Kearns ’54, York Larese ‘56, Jim Lembo, Tony Perrone, Br. Aquinas Richard, and Brian Winters ’70. It was a proud day for the Coach Niklaus, who has always given his max effort in inspiring Molloy’s student-athletes for the past 25 years. The Stanner Alumni Center and Archbishop Molloy High School congratulate Coach Niklaus on this well deserved honor.

“The Stanner” Wins Big At Press Awards – Again!
The monthly release of “The Stanner” has been one of the most beloved traditions here at Molloy for many decades. Students are given their place to sound off, to become educated beyond the classroom about what is happening at their school, and to share their photos and stories with their peers. Beyond being a popular Molloy tradition, The Stanner is also regularly recognized among professionals in New York City as an outstanding high school newspaper. Over the years, The Stanner has often won top honors at The Tablet’s Annual High School Press Awards. 2014 was no different, as The Stanner collected the General Excellence Award as the best Catholic high school newspaper in Brooklyn/Queens for the fifth straight year, and for the sixth time in the past seven years. In addition, senior Anna Poulakas ’14 became the first Molloy reporter to win two first place awards in the same year. There were also a slew of other first, second, and third place finishes for individual honors (listed below). “What is most impressive to me about the kids who work for The Stanner is that they work very hard every month doing something that makes their classmates – not themselves – look good,” said Mr. Charley McKenna, moderator of the paper. “Unlike any other activity at Molloy, the kids who write and edit The Stanner are subjected to a level of criticism that no other group faces. They must answer to their peers when there are disagreements about something that is published. It’s a tough job.” John Fenner ’15 (pictured above second from the right), editor-in-chief for the paper, was excited by the big win. “It’s great that all of our hard work paid off and that The Stanner was recognized by The Tablet again,” said John. “The other high school papers are great, but I think overall The Stanner is more refined. It’s time consuming, but worth it.” John will miss several of his fellow editors who have graduated this year, but looks ahead to being a senior on staff this fall. “Working on The Stanner has taught me a lot in terms of collaborating with others. I’m looking forward to next year. If we don’t take home best paper again it would be a disappointment.”

Molloy is saddened to share the passing of Brother James J. Ryan ’48 (also known as Brother Francis Bernard Ryan) on June 6, 2014. Br. James enjoyed a long, fulfilling life as a dedicated Marist Brother and teacher. Early on in his career he spent several years at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx between 1952-1955, and later went on to teach at a number of schools including Marist College, St. Ann’s Academy, St. Mary’s High School in (Manhasset), St. Joseph Academy (Laredo, TX), St. John’s University, Archbishop Molloy High School (1965-1973, 1995-1999), Rice High School, and Marist High School (Bayonne, NJ). At Molloy, Br. James primarily taught English and Film, and also worked in the student cafeteria. He retired from teaching in 2000. We ask our community to please pray for the repose of the soul of Br. James, and keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as well.
