    Dear USA Marists,

Blessings to each of you during these sacred days of this Easter season. As we journey through these weeks and await the great Feast of Pentecost, I pray that we might, like the early disciples, gather in our own “Upper Rooms” within our communities and seek ways to bring the miracle of Christ’s Resurrection to life in a world that so deeply longs for hope.

May we continue to listen to the voice of Mary, who accompanied those first disciples and inspired the earliest days of our Church. As Marists, we are called to walk in her way—to be the Marian face of the Church today—open to the Holy Spirit and ready to go forth as Christ’s witnesses “even to the remotest parts of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

With prayers, hope, and the joy of the Risen Christ,

    --- Br. Dan O'Riordan '85, Provincial

As part of the visit, Molloy’s Stanners created bilingual children’s books in English and Spanish, which they proudly shared with the younger students.

Ms. Espinal described the experience as “exceptionally meaningful,” noting that it “helped break language barriers that many students and their families face.” She added, “By creating bilingual books, we were able to provide something that students can take home and read with their parents, allowing families to connect and enjoy the stories together.”

The trip offered a powerful opportunity for our students to see the real impact of their work while giving back to the community in a thoughtful and lasting way. Go Stanners!

That tradition of excellence continues today. Our 2024–25 Varsity team earned the prestigious Easton NFCA Top Team GPA Award, finishing with an outstanding 4.0 team GPA, a true testament to their commitment both on the field and in the classroom.

This year’s squad continues to excel, as the team was ranked 3rd in New York State (Class AAA) as of May 5, 2026. Our senior class has demonstrated remarkable dedication and success, with three student-athletes committing to continue their softball careers at the collegiate level: Kimberly (Kimmy) Piazza (St. John’s University), Alicia Acevedo (John Jay College of Criminal Justice), and Megan Chelius (Union College). In addition, junior standout Diem Nenadich has already committed to Hofstra University.

This season is shaping up to be another memorable one, as our JV team holds an impressive 10–1 record, while Varsity stands at 16–1 overall. As we cheer our teams to victory, we recognize how we got here. Please enjoy this special presentation.

This year, Ms. DeNoto, along with Mr. Brian Klimas ’98, Ms. Abbey Hipkin, Mr. John Attard ‘06, President Richard Karsten ’81, Mrs. Kathleen Karsten, and 49 Stanners, journeyed to Asia to explore South Korea and Japan!

The trip, titled K-Pop & Culture - Epic South Korea & Japan, ran from April 1st to April 12th, with the first half spent in South Korea and the remainder in Japan. In South Korea, Stanners immersed themselves in culture through a K-Pop dance class, visits to landmarks like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Myeong-dong Cathedral, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, as well as excursions to Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm. They also experienced local markets and rode the KTX high-speed train! In Japan, the group traveled to Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Tokyo, visiting iconic sites such as Mount Fuji National Park, the Bamboo Forest, Harajuku, and Shibuya Crossing. Activities included a manga art class, ziplining, a Lake Ashi cruise, a geisha performance, and karaoke. Throughout the trip, students also explored each country’s food scene, enjoying everything from street food to BBQ and hotpot.

“The trip was especially meaningful for its rich cultural exposure,” said Ms. DeNoto, noting its strong appeal to students interested in K-Pop, anime, and experiencing Asia firsthand. President Karsten echoed this enthusiasm, describing the experience as an exciting opportunity to explore local customs, cuisine, and the blend of ancient and modern life across major cities in Korea and Japan. Sophomore Anabella Tarnawa ’28 added that the 12-day trip was “packed with activities,” allowing her to fully experience each country.

Both the 2027 and 2028 trips are now accepting registrations! Contact Ms. DeNoto to learn more about joining her on an Educational Adventure!

30th Annual Stanner Golf Classic – 2 Weeks Away!

  • When: Monday, May 2nd, 2016
  • Where: North Hills Country Club & Plandome Country Club

by Matt Rizzotti ‘04

The 30th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic is just two weeks away, and while we have many golfers signed up to play, there is still much work to be done. I would like to thank everyone who has registered so far, and I encourage those still considering joining us at the outing to take the plunge. As we have published over the past few weeks, the Stanner Golf Classic is a day filled with many perks. Every golfer will enjoy food and beverages throughout the day, cocktails, dinner, dessert, prize holes, door prizes, silent and live auctions, a raffle, and more. Beyond that, your participation directly helps students in need through our scholarship program. The bar was set high last year, with over $155,000 raised. I am confident that together as a community, along with 2016 Chairman Joe Papavero ’04 and our Stanner Golf Classicdedicated Golf Board, we are capable of raising the bar even higher. It all starts with your registration.

I would also like to encourage our community to consider volunteering at the Stanner Golf Classic. There are many roles throughout the day that need to be filled, and our volunteers are very important toward providing a quality experience for our alumni and corporate sponsors. If you are interested in volunteering please contact me as soon as possible.

Lastly, I would like to once again extend my condolences to the Smith family. Joe Smith was a teacher at Molloy for over 40 years, but beyond the classroom he was an enthusiastic volunteer and an even better friend to generations of alumni. He was particularly close to alumni who have golfed with us over the years because, as you may know, Joe was one of the Stanner Golf Classic’s three co-founders. Along with Jim Kinnier and John Gibbons, the “Three Amigos” created a tradition that is now celebrating its 30th year. I think the perfect way to celebrate Joe’s legacy would be a strong showing on May 2nd.

We’re looking forward to a great outing on what will hopefully be a sunny day. Get your registrations in today, and we’ll see you out on the course soon.

Remembering Mr. Smith

Mr. Smith in 1975It was with sadness that Molloy shared news of the passing of Mr. Joseph J. Smith on April 8th at the age of 72. Joe Smith taught English at Molloy from 1968 until his retirement in the late 2000’s. Mr. Smith loved Molloy, and he always worked hard to bring the out best in each student. In addition to his passion for education, Mr. Smith was also an avid volunteer. In 1987 he, along with colleagues Jim Kinnier and John Gibbons, founded the Stanner Golf Classic, which has since raised over $2 million in scholarship support for students in need. He actively supported the Classic for nearly three decades. Mr. Smith was a wonderful mentor and friend to many, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Smith, his family, friends, and students.

News of Mr. Smith’s passing prompted an outpouring of love and support from the Molloy community via social media. Alumni, friends, family members, and colleagues shared many wonderful memories of Mr. Smith, his English class, and sometimes even his detention periods! The memories, however, were all genuine, and speak to a man that truly cared for his students. Here are just a few tributes:

“My prayers are with you Mr. Smith. Sending you my best. God Bless You. I learned many valuable lessons from you as my English teacher all those years ago. Thank you.” – Joe Manfre, CPA, ‘74

Mr. Smith in 1980“Mr. Smith, you are one of the finest men I have ever met in my life and you were a great mentor to me. Some remember your gruffness or detention halls, but they don’t always realize how much of a caring man you were and how everything you did was for the benefit of your students and colleagues. You were a great inspiration to so many, and you were an amazing man. You helped shape the course of many lives. I have many fond memories of your lessons and will never forget the impact you had on me.” – Mike Riccardi ‘91

“Rest in Peace, Mr. Smith. Having you as an English teacher was one of the best things that had happened to me at Molloy. Much of what I learned in your class made me a sharper and more inquisitive student. That extended well into college and after. Thank you.” – Edgar Malaran ’96

“Mr. Smith was an amazing teacher and mentor. He will be missed. I will never forget the many camping trips he, Mr. Gibbons, and Mr. Kinnier took us on! So much fun! Non Scholae Sed Vitae. Rest in peace, Mr. Smith. And say hi to Mr. Gibbons for me.” – Michael Campanella ’98

“Thank you Mr. Smith. I will forever remember you.” – Louis Delvalle ’09

Molloy Celebrates International Day

President Richard Karsten '81 and Principal Darius Penikas with students at International DayMolloy prides itself on strong values of faith, service, and excellence in academics and athletics. We also takes great pride in the diversity of our students, who collectively represent hundreds of different ethnicities among the thousands that make up New York City. In order to take advantage our central location in New York’s most diverse borough, faculty and staff founded International Day. Now 35 years running, International Day offers an opportunity for our students to celebrate their diverse cultural backgrounds through song, dance, and homemade ethnic foods.

From Europe to East Asia, South America to the Middle East, and Africa to the Caribbean, dozens of countries all across the globe were represented at this year’s International Day. The Irish Jig and Bollywood Fusion were among an eclectic performance program that also included Merengue, Salsa, and Bachata dances. Molloy’s Ebony Club, Step Team, and Dance Team each rounded out the performance portion of the day with dance routines President Richard Karsten '81 with Herbert Leona '11 and family.highlighting American culture as well as cultural diversity as a general theme. “Students were excited and extremely prideful to take part in these cultural performances,” said Principal Darius Penikas, who served on the International Day planning committee for the first time. “I was impressed by not only the amount of preparation that went into each movement and step, but their execution was wonderful. It was definitely a sight to see for everyone in attendance.” (Pictured: President Richard Karsten ’81 with Herbert Leona ’11 and family)

Later in the day, homemade ethnic dishes were prepared by students and their families and made for a quick taste of regions around the world. For those craving something savory, the Leona family, including Class of 2011 graduate Herbert Leona, served up healthy portions of their whole coal fire cooked pig. Homemade lasagna, Asian glass noodles and dumplings, empanadas, tortas, smoked cheeses from Holland, Dutch pancakes, and Irish International_Day_1soda bread were among the many offerings served up to the hungry crowd of 400 students, parents, faculty, and alumni.

“International Day is one of my favorite days on the Molloy calendar,” said President Richard Karsten ’81. “It is important for our students to celebrate their own cultural diversity while at the same time learning about the ethnic backgrounds of friends and their families. It helps create an understanding that we are all part of one global family.” President Karsten also praised the participation of the school community at large, describing parents as “an important link to our students’ heritage who should always be celebrated.”

Last week, students in Ms. Espinal’s Spanish cla Last week, students in Ms. Espinal’s Spanish class traveled to Washington Heights to visit KIPP Elementary School, where they spent time reading with a kindergarten class.

The legacy continues! Go Stanners!
