The Stanner Alumni Reunion is now only two weeks away, and time is running out to register! This year’s reunion, hosted here at Molloy, will feature the classes of: 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2009. We’re still aiming to beat last year’s record of 650 in attendance, but we have a ways to go. Help us make history by spreading the word to your classmates and reuniting on Nov 1st!

In addition, Molloy will honor four distinguished individuals with induction into the Stanner Hall of Fame: Dr. John Scileppi, PhD, ’63, Sr. Elizabeth Bickar, Police Officer John Williamson ’86 (posthumously), and Rear Admiral Robert Duncan ’68. These honorees have all exemplified the character and conduct reflected in Molloy’s motto: “Not for school but for life.”

Stanner Community Runs Molloy’s Andrew Harvey 5K

On Sunday, October 5th, the Stanner community took part in the 27th Annual Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run at Molloy. This year’s race happened upon one of the best weather days it has seen in recent memory, and runners were eager to advantage and make their way through the familiar (famous) route. The 5K begins on the school’s track, loops around Molloy and the streets of Briarwood, challenges runners with a pesky hill known to many Molloy runners, and finally finishes up back on the track. A One Mile Race was also offered for runners who were eager for a different challenge, and later kids of all age groups took part in the Little One’s Dash. Coffee, juice, bagels, cake, and rolls were offered to all runners and guests following the conclusion of the day’s races, while the top three finishers in each age group and category were awarded medals for their outstanding performances. “I would like to thank Frank Gambino, Br. Bob Andrews, and all the volunteers, alumni, and family members that have helped make the Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run one of Molloy’s proudest traditions,” said President Richard Karsten ’81. “It is never easy for any event to sustain 27 consecutive years of success, but the continued commitment of all involved with this annual run is truly inspiring. ‘64 Grads Lead Reunion Charge with Class Gift

Earlier this year we reported in The Beehive that the Class of 1964, Molloy’s largest graduating class ever, has been eagerly anticipating its 50th anniversary reunion for several years. Work to track down their classmates began as far back as 2012, but in March 2014 a larger contingent of ’64 grads finally connected to catch up as well as to make arrangements to begin a calculated reunion recruitment effort. This past summer proved productive for our ’64 Reunion Committee members, as they contacted many classmates who have either remained connected to Molloy or who have not been active members of the community for some time. The work of these volunteers not only sparked great interest in the reunion on November 1st, but it also stirred a sense of school pride as well. An August letter, sent by committee members including Greg Spano ’64, Barry Mastellone ’64, Larry McNamara ’64, Gene McParland ’64, and Tom Kraemer ’64, was received warmly by classmates near and far, and many responded by participating in a “class gift” effort for the first time. The Class of 1964 has collectively donated over $16,000 to Archbishop Molloy High School’s scholarship program since receiving the letter. This is an overwhelming display of school pride by our ’64 Stanners, and everyone at Molloy cannot express enough thanks for their generosity.

Though this is a wonderful achievement, our committee members were not done. Greg, Barry, Larry, Gene, and Tom spent several hours at Molloy last week making phone calls and further spreading the word about their 50th anniversary reunion. The Stanner Alumni Center applauds the work of these dedicated alumni, and hopes that our many other class years reuniting on November 1st will show the same enthusiasm leading up to the big night. Gold-Onwude ’05 Making Strides in Golden State

In August, Stanner alum Rosalyn Gold-Onwude ’05 announced that she would be joining the NBA’s Golden State Warriors organization as a sideline reporter. “I am OVERJOYED to join Comcast SportsNet’s Golden State Warriors’ broadcast team,” Gold said on Twitter (@ROSGO21). The former Stanford basketball star previously made an impact with MSG Network as part of their television coverage of the WNBA’s NY Liberty. Gold served as a Liberty sideline reporter and analyst from 2012 until this summer, providing on air commentary as well as digital content via social media and Youtube. Now her skills take her to northern California where the spotlight will shine just a bit brighter. Gold’s own playing accolades are well documented, having played in three Final Four tournaments in college and having been named PAC-10 Defense Player of the Year her senior year. She was also inducted into the GCHSAA Hall of Fame in 2011 (pictured with Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81). Gold is a great asset to the Warriors in that she can relate to the players based on her own past success, and help bring their emotions from the court to audiences at home through her interviews.

With the Warriors’ regular season scheduled to begin on October 29th, Gold is currently getting her reps in during the team’s preseason coverage. She recently tweeted photos from TV interviews she conducted with Warriors players Stephen Curry and Klay Thomas, as well as photos from Stanford’s most recent Athletics Hall of Fame dinner for which she served as Master of Ceremonies. With a busy schedule ahead that is only bound to get busier, there is no doubt that Molloy’s own Rosalyn Gold-Onwude is ready to meet these new challenges and more.

PRESS RELEASE – Students Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program / National Achievement Program

Principal Br. Thomas Schady and the administration at Archbishop Molloy High School are proud to announce that students Justin Esposito and John Boyle have qualified as semi-finalists among the top 16,000 of all students in the National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) for 2015. Justin and John are now preparing to compete for finalist status.

In addition, the following Stanners have been named Commended Students in the 2015 NMSP: Lillian Mangialino, Andreea Muntean, Valerie Rico, Joseph Schauer, and Lawrence Wu. Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,”  commented a spokesperson for NMSP. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Also, Molloy’s Tahina Felisca and Brianne Lindee were named 2015 National Achievement Program Outstanding Participants Referred to Colleges. Tahina and Brianne are among 1,300 outstanding students who scored in the top 3% of more than 160K African American students who sought consideration in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2013 PSAT and NMSP Qualifying Test. The National Achievement Scholarship Program was founded in 1964 to honor academically promising African American high school students. The scholarship competition is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which also conducts the NMSP open to all U.S. high school students.

Veteran’s Day Memorial Event – 3 Weeks Away!

Molloy will honor Stanners who have fallen in battle, as well as all Stanners who have served for the United States armed forces, during a special Veteran’s Day Memorial Event on Friday, November 7th. The event will take place at Molloy at 3:00pm and feature a ceremony followed by a reception with light refreshments. The ceremony will recognize the valor of many, in particular that of Private First Class Louis Willett ’63, a fallen Vietnam War soldier that gave his life to save the other members of his platoon. PFC Willett was posthumously awarded with the Medal of Honor for his bravery, and remains the only Stanner to be awarded with this honor (Read more about PFC Louis Willett). We also encourage our alumni currently serving in any branch of the armed forces to attend the ceremony here at Molloy if their schedules permit. Aliesha Grandison ’13 was spotted in Saint Anselm College’s Fall recruitment brochure sharing her experiences as a student-athlete for the benefit of prospective students. Aliesha is a member of the school’s rugby team and starts each day early by lifting weights in the fitness center with her teammates. She is also active with Campus Ministry, a class seminar leader, and has volunteered at a number of fundraisers and events on campus. Aliesha is described as an extremely busy student, but one who finds a balance thanks to campus programs that help her to stay serious about her academics while still fulfilling her busy schedule. Great work, Aliesha!

Kevin Browne ’83 was recently appointed to the position of Senior Director, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. In this leadership role, Kevin will oversee the integration of nursing practice, quality and education. Kevin has been employed at Memorial Sloan Kettering since April 1998. Early in his tenure he was a nurse leader in pre-surgical services, and in 2008 was promoted to nursing director overseeing critical care and pediatric nursing services. In addition to his new role as senior director, Kevin will continue to co-chair the Joint Commission Provision of Care Task Force.

During a recent visit to Dallas, Texas, Greg Farrell ’74 visited the George W. Bush Presidential Library where he viewed a large exhibit dedicated to the September 11th, 2001 tragedy. This exhibit was installed because the events of September 11th were of great significant during Bush’s presidency. The exhibit included a wall featuring the names of all victims. Greg spent time to search the wall and find the name of his classmate and friend Patrick J. Waters ’74, an FDNY Hazmat1 Captain who was lost at the World Trade Center attempting to save the lives of others. Thank you, Greg, for continuing to remember one of our fallen Stanner heroes.

John Daly ’62 and wife Judith recently spent several days in Mattituck, Long Island, with friend Connie Whalen ’63. The group took full advantage of the opportunity by sailing the Peconic Bay on Connie’s 8 meter Quick Step. John and Connie speak of Molloy often when they get together. “If the experience at Molloy was about anything, it was about being smart,” said John. “I think that means taking advantage of the opportunities presented in life and working hard. It’s a pretty good plan for life that served us both well.” Both Stanners wish the faculty and staff at Molloy a successful school year.
