The Stanner Alumni Center presents to you, the Stanner community, our Annual Report for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. This report, available in the Beehive and on the Molloy alumni homepage, is a way to recognize and thank the very special members of the Stanner community who have so generously supported Archbishop Molloy High School and its mission. Molloy continues to be able to provide an excellent education in mind, body and spirit because of you, and we are sincerely thankful. 32nd Annual International Day

With its central location in Queens, Archbishop Molloy High School’s students and their families reflect the cultural mosaic pot that is New York City. To showcase this tremendous diversity, Molloy hosted its 32nd Annual International Day on Sunday, April 22nd. The event, which draws over 1,000 Molloy students, families, alumni, friends, and members of the community, celebrates cultures spanning the globe with authentic cuisine prepared by students and their parents as well as entertaining performances starring many of the school’s clubs and dance teams. “This day is a celebration of our cultural roots and our diversity,” said Richard Karsten, the President of the school and class of 1981 welcoming the crowd. “We proudly express our national pride through song and dance and the delicious food that we share together. All of these things add up to the spirit of hospitality and family that is embedded in everything that we do at Molloy. Although our families originate from many places across the globe, we are connected as members of the Molloy community, and we are united as proud citizens of the borough of Queens.” The spirit Mr. Karsten spoke of was on display immediately as students and their parents as well as alumni volunteered their time and efforts to not only preparing their international dishes ahead of time, but to serving their creations to the hungry crowds that awaited. With selections including Polish, German, Irish, Italian, Asian, Spanish and Central and South American cuisine among many other offerings, there truly was something for everyone. Perhaps just as inviting as the food were the countless volunteers on hand. “International Day gives the students  and their families an important opportunity to show their national pride,” says Ms. Sabina Kobinski, a teacher at Molloy and class of 2004 who acted as one of the lead organizers of the event. “Of course, all of the food was delicious. Every dish told a story, and with so many cultures represented at International Day, there was much to learn from each and every bite.”

Following the lunch and dessert portion of the day, President Karsten welcomed New York State Assemblyman Rory Lancman, a representative of Briarwood and the 25th Assembly District. “When asked about the diversity of my district, I would not have to direct someone very much further than Archbishop Molloy High School,” said Lancman as he addressed the crowd. “In looking out at all of you today, I see an enthusiastic melting pot that is truly a benefit to our community.” Lancman thanked the Molloy community for making International Day possible before giving way to the student hosts for the remainder of the program. Taking the stage thereafter were a number of Molloy clubs and dance teams who provided unique performances to further express their diversity. Performances included a bagpipe medley by Molloy’s Pipes and Drums band, Irish and Greek dancing, “Pointe Variation” provided by the French Club, the Asian Club’s “Lion Dance,” Merengue and Bachata, Bolloywood Fusion and much more. The school’s award winning step teams rounded out the day with a strong showing of school spirit, proclaiming “We are AM!” In the end it was clear that International Day was a total success once again. Thanks to the student, parent, alumni and faculty volunteers the event captured the diversity of the school and the community while celebrating the way in which our differences often bring us together. Spirit Week

April 23^rd marked the beginning of a much anticipated week on the Molloy calendar. Spirit Week is an opportunity for students, administration and faculty to show their school spirit around Molloy by joining together in a number of events and activities. Based on the success of Spirit Week last year, organizers were tasked with improving on already successful efforts. Once again Mr. Ed Cameron, along with other faculty members including Ms. Elizabeth Reichert, Mr. Brian Kelly ’94 and Mr. Brian Klimas ’98 – and just about everyone else, really – planned a significant number of ways to get Stanners involved around the school and working together.

Each day of Spirit Week proved to be a comfortable experience as students were encouraged to dress down with specific themes in mind. From heritage day (fresh off the heels of International Day) to dress-up day, to Molloy apparel day, students boasted their school spirit in style. Dress-up day (pictured below) in particular was an interesting spin on a typical casual day as Stanners walked the halls in suits and business attire. Returning contests included homeroom door decorating and a “guess how many” candy count, while new competitions tasked students with designing a new sweatshirt for their club or a Molloy “Doodle” in the style of the famous “Google Doodles.” Also returning were several games and activities including Molloy Idol (pictured above), Stanner Feud and Minute to Win It, which gave students a chance to show off their singing skills and or work together as a team to best the rest. Molloy Idol may have been the most challenging of the bunch – the judging panel of Mr. William Flemen ’94, Ms. Elizabeth Murdocca and Mr. Mark Sweeney ’03 proved to be tougher than Randy, Paula and Simon could ever be. Molloy’s skilled musicians, dancers and actors also had the opportunity to showcase their craft in the annual Talent Show. Students and faculty members performed original and cover songs before giving way to the Dance Team and their rousing dance medley accompanied by vintage and contemporary dance hits. Samantha Arena ’13 (pictured) was a standout performer and, considering she taught herself how to play guitar in September, her work was particularly impressive. Mr. Frank Gambino ‘74 closed out the show with a heartfelt tune about perhaps the greatest moment in his life – recently becoming a grandpa.

A dodge-ball tournament, CSI Forensics activity, and Molloy night at Citi Field were also planned for the week. More than 100 students, faculty, Stanner families and friends attended the Mets game on April 24^th to cheer on hometown hero Mike Baxter ’02, or as he’s come to be known around the Mets broadcast booth, “the kid from Whitestone.” Baxter had the privilege of appearing in the starting lineup for the Mets that evening, although he had the great displeasure of facing one of the game’s top pitchers in the Marlins’ Josh Johnson.

Everyone at Molloy worked extremely hard on making Spirit Week a memorable experience. Special thanks goes out to all faculty and student volunteers who contributed to the planning and execution of the activities and events during Sprit Week. As we approach the final stretch of the school year, we have all been reminded that it is a great privilege to be able to say “We Are AM!”

Molloy Alumni Happy Hour

Register Online Now! Thanks to the efforts of Steve Bisciello and Daniel Moore, class of 1995, on Friday, May 18th, all Molloy alumni (of legal drinking age) are invited to attend a special Happy Hour event at Still Bar, located at 192 3rd Avenue in Manhattan. 26th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic

The Stanner Golf Classic is all booked up! We are happy to announce that Plandome and North Hills Country Clubs are at capacity this coming Monday, May 7^th, thanks to the wonderful support of the Stanner Community. Over 72 foursomes are preparing to take to the greens for what is sure to be a memorable day. We would like to thank all alumni, corporate sponsors, administration, faculty, parents, family members, friends and volunteers for your commitment to the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic and to Archbishop Molloy High School. Your generosity has not only made this one of the most anticipated outings in years, but it has already helped to sustain the excellent education in mind, body and spirit that Molloy offers to students in need through its Scholarship Program. You have made a difference in the lives of present and future students, and we are truly appreciative of all your efforts. Special thanks to Alumni Relations Director Maria Ford for all of her diligent preparation over the past several months, to our honorees, Chairman Chuck Tabone ‘68 and Honorary Chairman A.J. Power ’84, and to the dedicated golf committee for all of their hard work in raising dozens of prizes and sponsorships. Without all of you, this event would not be possible. Thank you. After serving as Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach at Coral Springs Charter HS in Florida for the past 12 years, (where he earned Coach of the Year honors in 2010) Jerry Albert ’84 accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami in summer 2011. The all-boys Catholic school reminds him a lot of his years at Molloy, where he served as a PE teacher, JV Baseball coach, and Athletic Director during his tenure from 1989-1998.

Jerry’s two boys, Gerard and Armando, will now attend Belen while his girls, Carolena and Ariana, will continue to attend Archbishop McCarthy HS and St. David’s. Jerry and his wife of 19 years, Maria, maintain their home in Pembroke Pines. He continues to direct the Jack Curran Baseball Camp each summer with Coach Curran and Mike McCleary. “It’s the highlight of my summer,” says Jerry. “I love coming up to NY and spending the two weeks with Coach Curran and the rest of the guys from Molloy that work and attend the camp. I brought the boys up with me last summer and they absolutely loved it – it was a great experience for them and gave them a chance to be around Coach Curran for a few weeks. I think they developed an appreciation for the people who have been so influential to me in my life.”

Class Updates

Brad Katinas ’90 is a board member at the Hance Family Foundation, an organization supporting healthy, safe, and happy children. The foundation has generously supported the Mid-Hudson Valley camps in Esopus and is holding an upcoming event that may interest Stanners and their families. Come out for family day and a 5K run on Saturday, May 19^th at Centennial Gardens (251 Floral Parkway, Floral Park, NY 11001). Congratulations to Ivan Pereira ’03, who captured two awards presented by the New York Press Association 2011 Better Newspaper Contest. Ivan earned a First Place prize (along with colleagues Howard Koplowitz, Christina Santucci and Joe Anuta) for In-Depth Reporting citing excellence in research and writing as part of the Jamaica Times newspaper team. Ivan was also awarded second place for coverage of education (again with his colleagues at the Jamaica Times). Ivan is currently working with the New York Times as a freelance reporter, covering breaking news for the paper’s metro section. Most recently Ivan applied his journalistic prowess to the coverage of Occupy Wall Street protests around New York City on May Day. Ivan reported on events at several locations in Manhattan where protests were gaining momentum. You can read the story in which he contributed to here.

Stephanie Lanza ‘05 is very excited to announce that she and NYPD Police Officer Sean Ryan ’05 were engaged to be married on March, 2012. We wish this happy Stanner couple much happiness as they prepare to tie the knot. Congratulations!

Dr. Brian Fallon ’73 informed us that his father, John J. Fallon, passed away on May 2nd. Brian asks that the Stanner community prays for his father as well as his mother, who is coping with this difficult loss.

We received sad news that Daniel Healy ’61 passed away at his home in San Jose, California on April 25^th. The following is from Daniel’s obituary: “Daniel B. Healy touched the lives of people on both sides of the US. Born in the Bronx to Timothy and Anna Healy, Dan grew up and went to school in Flushing, NY. A graduate of Archbishop Molloy HS, he attended college in NY and joined the army, extending his army time to go to Vietnam where he earned a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement. After the army, Dan came to San Jose in 1968 to attend college under the GI bill where he met and married Mary Ann, and settled down. For over 20 years, he was owner/operator of 2 Round Table Pizza restaurants. Dan enjoyed sports, following teams from NY and the Bay Area, was an avid reader, a history buff, a card player, and a lover of good food. Predeceased by his parents; sister Joan P. Ahern; & brother John R. Healy, Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann; brother and sister-in-law Ted & Joan Shugar; 5 nieces and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews in New York; many in-laws in California, and countless friends on both coasts. He will be deeply missed.” Arrangements for the burial of Daniel’s ashes in New York are still being planned. It is with sadness that we relate news of the passing of Regina Lukasiewicz, mother of George Lukasiewicz ’81, on April 14, 2012. George and his family would like to ask the Stanner community to keep Regina and the Lukasiewicz family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
