Molloy will honor Stanners who have fallen in battle, as well as all Stanners who have served for the United States armed forces, during a special Veteran’s Day Memorial Event on Friday, November 7th. The event will take place at Molloy at 3:00pm and feature a ceremony followed by a reception with light refreshments. The ceremony will recognize the valor of many, in particular that of Private First Class Louis Willett ’63, a fallen Vietnam War soldier that gave his life to save the other members of his platoon. PFC Willett was posthumously awarded with the Medal of Honor for his bravery, and remains the only Stanner to be awarded with this honor (Read more about PFC Louis Willett). We also encourage our alumni currently serving in any branch of the armed forces to attend the ceremony here at Molloy if their schedules permit.
Alumni, Parents & Friends Celebrate Oktoberfest
The Stanner Alumni Center’s newest tradition, Alumni Oktoberfest, has gotten stellar reviews! If you haven’t heard, Molloy hosted its second annual Oktoberfest event on Thursday, October 9th, and we received a great response from those who attended. Guests’ class years spanned from the 1960’s to as recent as 2010, and parents and friends made themselves right at home during this relaxing and fun evening. All guests enjoyed German style food including bratwurst with sauerkraut, pretzels, sliced pork, potatoes with bacon, and other sides as well as a selection of high quality craft beers. All food and beverages was provided by our friends at Trinity Restaurant & Bar in Floral Park. Molloy’s recently renovated cafeteria was decked out in familiar bohemian patterns, and traditional Oktoberfest music completed the scene for an authentic atmosphere. Please take a few moments to browse our photo gallery below. Thanks to all who came out to celebrate with us, and we hope you will help us make this a longstanding tradition in the years to come!

Around the School
Open House Welcomes Over 4,600 Visitors
Molloy opened its doors to prospective students and their families on Sunday, October 19th on what turned out to be another record breaking day. Over 4,600 visitors toured the school, and each came away with a better understanding of why Molloy is one of the best Catholic high schools in New York City. Faculty and students guided 7th and 8th graders and their parents through academic, athletic, spiritual, and activity-based presentations around the 6 acre campus while alumni and parents volunteered their time by working as greeters and sharing how the Molloy experience has impacted them. All in all, it was a great effort by all members of our community. “We had over 1,550 families register with new inquiry cards, and we distributed over 2,000 information kits,” said Ms. Leslie Poole-Petit, Molloy’s Admissions Director. “Recruitment is a shared responsibility for students, teachers, administrators, and staff as well as our alumni and parents. We all play a role in getting the message out and fielding questions as they arise, and with more emphasis being placed on recruitment right after Labor Day, it’s all hands on deck. Thank you to all who worked so hard for your support.”
Softball Team Raises Money for Breast Cancer Awareness
Earlier this season, Molloy’s Varsity softball team was among six teams in their CHSAA league that joined together to raise money for breast cancer awareness during a special fundraising day. The teams collectively brought in over $1,200 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is the world’s largest nonprofit organization that funds the fight against breast cancer. “It was a great day. Our girls played their usual opponents, but this time they all played for a common cause,” said Coach Maureen Rosenbaum. “I took pride in our girls, who all showed such enthusiasm in fundraising to fight against such a devastating disease that affects so many women of all ages.” Players from the six teams talked with each other about how the disease has impacted their families, and each player came away with more knowledge about the fight against breast cancer. The six teams hope to be involved in a similar fundraising effort to raise awareness for Autism in 2015.

George Jehn ’63 has penned his second book, this one a non-fiction published by Changing Lives Press entitled, “Final Destination: Disaster. What Really Happened to Eastern Airlines.” The book was released on October 1st and is available online at www.Amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com in hardcover and e-book formats. Besides flying as a pilot for Eastern for nearly eighteen years, George was also an elected member of the Eastern pilots Master Executive Council of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and as well as a member of ALPA’s Board of Directors. The ALPA union represented Eastern pilots. George was also a pilot member of the Eastern pilots System Board of Adjustment, the body set up under the U.S. Railway Labor Act that adjudicated pilot grievances, and the sole pilot member of the Eastern Employee Involvement Committee. Dr. Vinnie Gibney ’74 is owner of the Edgetown Veterinary Clinic & Laser Center in Greenville, Ohio. He now also owns and operates the Bellevue Animal Hospital in Bellevue, Kentucky.
Michael Long ’82 has been spending more time with his granddaughter lately, and has also been playing a few more rounds of golf with his sons. All the extra playing time likely contributed to the hole in one he shot during a small outing at the Forest Park course. The outing was organized and hosted by fellow Stanner Mike Rabus ‘74. Michael extends best wishes to all in the Molloy community.
Mike Montali ’03 and Jon Bonilla ’03, members of the American rock group Hollis Brown, are gearing up to enter the studio in the coming weeks to begin recording their new studio album. Their last effort, Ride on the Train, garnered stellar reviews and got music fans near and far to pay attention. Now they’re looking to continue their break through. The road is not always easy, however, and HB is looking to the community for a push. To find out more about Hollis Brown’s latest musical endeavor and what you can do to support their talents, visit http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/hollisbrown.
