2015 Walkathon Sees Stanners Pace Briarwood
Thanks to the enthusiasm and support of our students and their families, Molloy’s 22nd annual Walkathon was a huge success! Molloy students aimed to raise $150,000 for this year’s Walkathon. All money raised will fund a revamped front entrance on Manton and Main Streets as well as enhanced security features around the campus. “Our annual Walkathon is a great example of how our faculty, students, and parents come together to support capital projects at Molloy,” said Principal Darius Penikas. The I Am Green club collected trash along the Walkathon route to help beautify Briarwood, while other students participated in alternate activities during the day including Zumba, Ultimate Frisbee, and the World Trade Center Walk – the latter a tradition that began over ten years ago that pays homage to the late Br. Leo Richard. “We are very pleased with the participation of our students and their families in support of this year’s Walkathon goal,” said President Richard Karsten ’81. “The money raised for our Walkathon will directly improve the safety of every student at Molloy, which will help us to maintain our standing as a comfortable, safe, and premier learning institution.”
Thank you to all who supported our Walkathon. Special thanks to Ms. Elizabeth Murdocca, Director of Student Activities, who organized the many details of this event, and thank you to the local 107 police precinct for directing traffic and ensuring the safety of all Stanners and faculty.

2016 Scholarships for Academic Excellence
This fall, the State Education Department / The University of the State of New York / Albany announced its intent to award the 2016 Scholarships for Academic Excellence. These awards were formerly known as the New York State Regents Scholarships. Pending the appropriation of state funds during the 2016 session of the New York State Legislature, 8,000 Scholarships for Academic Excellence will be awarded to the top high school students graduating from New York State high schools in June 2016.
The State Education Department anticipates offering 2,000 scholarships valued at $1,500 and 6,000 scholarships valued at $500. Once the monies are appropriated, they will be awarded yearly for four years when nominated students opt to attend college within New York State. Nominations of students at Archbishop Molloy High School have been determined, as outlined in the State Education Department guidelines, by the students’ academic standing within their grade level at the end of their junior year. Nominated seniors are: Shibangi Saha, Shania Chua, Laksumi Sivanandan, Emily Peckham, Jack Mangin, Lucia Lin, Isabella Mercado, Jordan Fierek, Samantha Racan, Brendan Woods, Maria Gulino, and Peter Maisano. Congratulations and good luck to these deserving students!
Student Spotlight
Tiffany Daniel ‘16 enjoyed an internship at Medicare Rights Center (MRC) this past summer. The MRC is a national, nonprofit consumer service organization that works to ensure access to affordable healthcare for older adults and people with disabilities through counseling and advocacy, educational programs, and public policy initiatives. “I learned so much over six weeks while enhancing my communication, listening, and writing skills.” Tiffany’s responsibilities were diverse, including preparing presentations, learning the procedure for internal and external calls, data entry, campaign research, event planning, and database management. “The more meetings I attended, and the more connections I made, I quickly discovered that the knowledge I was gaining about Medicare through this internship would not only benefit me in time, but also my friends and family who I could share this important information with.” Tiffany gained valuable insights through the help of webinars and her attendance at client services meetings. “These experiences gave context to what I had been working on. The work became clearer to me, where at first it seemed like the ‘Da Vinci code!’”
“Interning at Medicare Rights Center improved my overall work ethic. I couldn’t feel more blessed to have enjoyed such a professional atmosphere for my first internship. As a young girl I always dreamed of being a working professional with my own desk space. I can’t find the words to express how fortunate I feel to have been able to have that dream come true before senior year of high school. Being around so many extraordinary colleagues who are just filled with a wealth of knowledge has only added to my ambition to continue working hard and studying hard so that a short internship like this can become a job and a lifestyle for me.”

Molloy Salutes Our Veterans
Archbishop Molloy High School salutes all men and women who have served or currently serve in the United States armed forces. Your sacrifices ensure the protection and freedom of every US citizen as well as our friends and allies around the world. We thank you for your service as we celebrate you this week.
One of of Molloy’s most decorated veterans, Stanner Hall of Famer PFC Louis E. Willett ’63, has been posthumously honored by the United States Postal Service along with other Medal of Honor recipients, living and deceased, who fought in the Vietnam War. The USPS earlier this year released a collector’s edition stamp set depicting the three different versions of the Medal of Honor. The stamps are centered on the front and back of a four page booklet and surrounded by portraits of living Medal of Honor recipients. Inside the booklet are the names of Medal of Honor recipients who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. PFC Willett’s name is listed alongside these fallen heroes. The Medal of Honor is the highest honor awarded to members of the United States military. It denotes “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.” More information about the stamps can be found HERE. Special thanks to Damon Pouyat ’63 for sharing this news with the Stanner Alumni Center.

Br. Ben Consigli ‘80 and Pat Coll ’80 recently connected in Berkeley, California. Having completed his work with the Marist Provincial office in June 2015, Br. Ben has since been living in Berkeley where he is enrolled in a program of study at the School of Applied Theology. “I have been enjoying courses on a variety of topics dealing with spirituality. All in all it has been very good,” said Br. Ben. Classmate Pat and his wife Rachel were in town and decided to pay Br. Ben a visit. “It was great to represent the Class of 1980 here in Berkeley with Pat. I was saddened to be unable to attend my class reunion in New York on November 7th, but I wish all of my classmates well, and continued prayers and well wishes for all in the Stanner community.”
Phil McManus ’64 recently returned from his first trip to Dublin, Ireland, where he attended a destination wedding for his son TJ and daughter-in-law Casey. Phil was pleased to see many of his high school friends in attendance at the wedding, including Stanner Hall of Famer Joe Browne ’64. “I wish continued success to the staff and students of my alma mater,” said Phil. Good luck to Phil and the newlyweds too!
Marc Garlasco ’88 (pictured right) has returned from deployment aboard DDG-107, USS Gravely, where he worked in the Combat Information Center during an exercise. Marc is a civilian at the Center for Naval Analyses. You can read more about Marc in an article published in September by the US Navy.
Steve Rodriguez ’03 has accepted a new position with the Global Entrepreneurship Network. Steve will fulfill the role of Startup Community Manager, which will allow him to engage with entrepreneurial communities on the web on a global level. “The startup industry is challenging, but this move has worked out great,” said Steve.
We are saddened to share the passing of the mother of faculty member Ms. Mary Pat Gannon. Please keep Ms. Gannon’s mother and her family in your prayers.
We are saddened to share the passing of Richard C. Coyle ’78. He is survived by his wife, Karen, four children, Danny, Brian, Emily and Aidan, parents, Patrick and Marge, siblings Tom, Juliana, and Maureen, 24 nieces and nephews, and 3 great nephews. Richard is a native of Douglaston, Queens, and in addition to Molloy a graduate of Boston College and NYU Business School. He enjoyed a successful career in finance and loved his colleagues and clients. He was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and shared it with everyone in his life. Please pray for Richard and the Coyle family.
We were recently informed of the passing of Raymond A. Gallope ’65 on September 29, 2009. Raymond was a highly respected clinical psychologist/family and marriage therapist located in Milwaukee. He was voted the Milwaukee Area’s Top Psychologist in February 2001 by Milwaukee Magazine. During his career he served as a consultant and provided clinical psychological services to Catholic families whose children attended Catholic schools in his local Archdiocese. He was soft-spoken, insightful, and a peacemaker by nature. His wife Denise shared with us, “As an alum of Molloy he brought honor, dignity, and Catholic values to his professional work and family life. I know he would have enjoyed reuniting this November with his classmates at the Class of 1965’s 50th anniversary. I hope his classmates enjoyed their golden get together, and that they remember Ray was with them in spirit.” Denise asks that the Stanner community remember Raymond in their prayers.
