Around the School
Spirit Week
There has always been a close-knit feeling through the halls of Stanner High over the years; a family bond…an intangible that is hard to put into words. Between the friendly faculty, countless sports and activities after school, and trips to Esopus, there’s no shortage of school spirit and memories that last a lifetime. But has there ever been a week completely focused on and densely packed with sports, activities, and school-wide participation? This past week, Archbishop Molloy High School was decked out for Spirit Week! Spirit Week hasn’t been around long – just a few years since the Student Council first thought up the idea in 2006. According to Mr. Ed Cameron, “We didn’t have too much planned for it…it was just there staring at us on the calendar. But little by little ideas started coming in from Ms. Reichert, Mr. Kelly, Mr. Klimas, and other faculty members. All of these ideas snowballed into the new and improved Spirit Week.” As the Director of Student Activities, Mr. Cameron has been able to devote more time and energy to planning Spirit Week.
Each day of the past week has offered several special activities and opportunities for participation. To help organize the events Ms. Reichert designed a huge, colorful calendar of events on the wall in the main hallway; an eye-grabber to say the least. On Monday students wore crazy hats and while some were more elaborate than others, all were in good fun. Students also continued decorating their homeroom doors, an activity they had started the previous week to have a bit more time to get their creative juices flowing. After school, Mr. Frank Gambino hosted one of his patented Molloy “Open Mic” events in the theater. On Tuesday students took part in “Crazy Sock Day” – and rest assured there was no shortage of stripes. After school the final round of Stanner Feud took place in the theater – a competition that had started the previous week (pictured, Ms. Kobinski hosts Stanner Feud). Students were surveyed on various Molloy trivia, and a large number of teams competed under standard Family Feud rules to earn points for their grade, which will earn them a dress down day later in the school year. Elsewhere, Mr. DaGrossa led a special performance by Molloy’s Guitar Ensemble in the cafeteria.
But wait, there’s more! On Wednesday students crowded around the Faculty Baby Picture Matching Game in the first floor hall (pictured), which showed Molloy’s faculty in a much different light.a Dodgeball Tournament was held in the gym after school – and a special opening act drew particular attention. A fundraiser had been underway, which saw each class collect money to earn more points for their grade. What was their biggest incentive? In raising enough money, students would also get to see their favorite faculty members duct taped to the walls of the Jack Curran Gym. The faculty members up for this dubious honor included Mr. Lyons, Mr. Hahn ‘02, Mr. Sweeney ’03, and Mr. DeSarno…and all were happy to volunteer, although perhaps they had second thoughts when they were stuck to the walls! This may have been the most popular event – just about the entire school came to see who would stay on the wall the longest. In the end Mr. DeSarno outlasted the rest and earned points for the seniors toward a future dress down day. Elsewhere in the theater, Molloy Idol invited students and faculty (including one Beehive writer) to belt out their favorite tunes. In addition, a battle of the bands was moderated by Mr. DaGrossa in the cafeteria.
Thursday saw Students dress down in Molloy blue, while seniors were invited to wear their future college garb. After school, Ms. Sabina Kobinski ’04 and Mr. Brian Klimas ‘94 moderated the “Minute to Win It” game (pictured), a take on the popular TV game show which sees contestants try to fulfill challenges with different objects in just one minute. A contest was held which tasked students with guessing the number of beans in a jar to win prizes, while faculty faced off against the seniors in a special game of Ultimate Frisbee in the Jack Curran Gym. Later on that evening the Spring Concert was held in the gym with Jim Sheehan leading the chorus as usual.
But there’s even more! On Friday students were encouraged to deck themselves out in all Molloy gear including shirts representing their sports teams, clubs, and even Esopus. The Stanner Players (pictured left, photo credit to Yearbook Staff) put on a special Spirit Week matinee performance of their hit show “Playing With Power”, which received rave reviews from many Stanner families, including alumni! On Friday evening, Stanners were invited to enjoy a Spirit Week Dance on a spectacular cruise around southern Manhattan. President Richard Karsten commented, “this was the very first boat ride for some of our students. And what better way is there to see our beautiful skyline, ‘on a boat’ at sunset?”
It took a lot of planning and a lot of work, but faculty and student participation was not hard to come by. There’s no question that everyone had fun and took a moment to think about why they love Molloy as they were participating in each and every activity this past week. The school was truly buzzing with energy for one amazing week. Special thanks to all students and faculty who helped show that nobody can beat the spirit of Archbishop Molloy High School.
Faculty Updates
Br. Bob McGovern
Br. Bob McGovern recently visited Archbishop Molloy High School all the way from the Philippines. Br. Bob taught freshman math and biology during Molloy’s first year in 1957 up until 1959. Following his three years at Molloy, Br. Bob spent time teaching in Texas and Florida before moving to the Philippines in 1967. While in the Philippines he became a high school principal and later charged the formation of Brothers at the Notre Dame of Marbel University in the Philippines. He helped establish a guidance and research center to help students who had trouble at home and also taught a graduate program. Eventually Br. Bob would become involved with several other institutions and helped oversee at least 112 schools and 75,000 students. In speaking with Br. Bob, he drew several comparisons to the lay faculty he has worked with in the Philippines and the lay faculty at Molloy in that they do so much to help mold young boys and girls into men and women under St. Marcellin Champagnat’s example. Also much like Molloy, the success of the institutions he had become involved with over the years were all influenced tremendously by the success and dedication of their alumni. Br. Bob emphasized the importance of the alumni community at Molloy and hoped it would continue to support the mission of the school. Pictured are Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81, Brother Bob, and Brother Regis.

Upcoming Events
Online registration is now available! Come out on June 18th for a day of wine, food, music, and relaxation at the Diliberto Winery in Jamesport, New York. Alum Salvatore Diliberto ‘63 and wife Maryann have been gracious enough to open their venue to fellow Stanners looking to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company as the summer commences. Guests will enjoy award winning wine, cheeses, lunch, and music provided by Molloy faculty members Frank Gambino ’74, Eric Stoltze ’86 and Jim Sheehan ’75. The mic will also be open to any guests interested in playing a few tunes of their own. A single admission ticket can be purchased $45 while a couple admission costs $80. For those looking for alternate transportation, the Hampton Jitney provides service in close proximity to the Diliberto Winery. If you have any additional questions about the Afternoon at the Vineyard, please contact Craig Katinas ’93 at ckatinas@molloyhs.org
Coach Jim Larranaga ’67 made news recently having accepted the University of Miami basketball coaching job in April, leaving his longtime post at George Mason. Larranaga has been an immensely successful and influential college coach, boasting a .584 winning percentage (470 wins to date) and numerous coach of the year honors while leading the Patriots to 13 consecutive winning seasons and an appearance in the Final Four in 2006. In transitioning to the University of Miami, Larranaga brought in fellow Molloy alum Chris Caputo ’98 as his lead assistant. Chris is well known for his scouting reports and a successful recruiting track record. In addition, Larranaga also met with retired NBA guard Kenny Anderson ’89 as part of an “exploratory conversation” initiated by Anderson. The two have been good friends for many years. Larranaga hopes to push all the right buttons in his new position as he looks to lead the Hurricanes to glory. Good luck, Coach!
Non scholae sed vitae
It’s no secret that Molloy track stars are very proud of their times. In fact we receive messages from Stanners asking for scans of old records or other forms of confirmation for their records just so they can prove to their friends that they’re not full of hot air. Well thanks to Mr. Joe Dombrowski, devoted teacher and track coach since 1983, Molloy now has archived track annuals dating from present back to the early 1960s. If you’ve been wondering about a record that you may have lost over the years, or would like to see where you stand in Molloy’s track history, feel free to peruse the links at the Molloy Track Annuals page and rediscover your achievements. Annuals are listed in PDF format for easy viewing and downloading. If you have any comments or questions, or have a claim to fame that you would like to boast, let us know! (Pictured above left to right: Harry Morgan ’90, Chris Lopez ’91, Mike Graf ’91, Tony Pough ’91, Jessy Terrero ’90, Mr Dombrowski, Pierre Millien ’92, and Justin Flanagan ’90, a mix of All-Americans and overall amazingly talented Molloy track stars)
Speaking of claims to fame, Shaun McGrath ’97 recently won the 2011 Long Island Marathon, a feat that was accomplished by his younger brother Daniel ‘01 in 2010. The McGraths are in a league all their own, as having back to back LI Marathon wins by Stanner brothers has NEVER happened. Congrats, men! Keith Forlenza ’05 finished 4th with a time of (1:11:53) while other Stanners to finish included Brian Gayron ’92 (1:35:43), Matt Genova ’86 (1:37:53), and Craig Katinas ’93 (1:39:27). Congratulations to all Stanners that ran the marathon!
Class Updates
Ed Krolikowski ’61 sent us the following message: “I would like to ask a favor. I could use your prayers for me. I am currently on Dialysis three times a week. I have CH, and I have a heart condition called A Fib. I would greatly appreciate your prayers. Thank You and God Bless.”
William Weiss ’61 is happy to announce that his daughter gave birth to his fourth grandchild on March 17, 2011. William is also looking forward to his 50th anniversary Molloy class reunion on November 5th and encourages his classmates to come back to Molloy for the special night.
Patrick Devaney ’86 (pictured) is looking forward to his 25th anniversary Molloy class reunion this coming November 5th, 2011. In the meantime he sent us a note letting us know what he’s been up to. Patrick is a NYC independent filmmaker and has been producing, directing, and starring in the “Zombie Hunters: City of the Dead” television series. According to Patrick, it is a precursor to the popular TV series “Dead Set” and “The Walking Dead” and has been seen locally in Queens and Manhattan (as well as several other national markets) since 2005. Fellow Stanners Robert Gooch and Joe Aguirre, both class of 1986, have worked with Patrick and even recruited alumni from what Patrick calls “the extended family” at The Mary Louis Academy, Bernadette McCallion ’89 for music and Kristen Kane ’88 for directing. Together they have made their project recognized globally as a top survival-horror based series. The show has recently been picked up by “The Monster Channel”, which coincidentally is owned by Molloy alum Joe Sena ’80. Patrick credits his motivation and creativity to Br. Leo Richard and the other people involved with the SMILE program at Molloy, saying, “I’d have been lost without them.”
Erwin Bernal ’00 is a special education/Jump Start teacher at York Preparatory School in Manhattan. He is also the head coach of the school’s middle school track team and assistant coach of the high school Varsity track team. Previously, Erwin spent a year as a resource room teacher and assistant track coach at Xaverian High School. He is taking classes towards his second Masters degree at St. John’s University (School Counseling). According to Erwin, “When I coach track, I think of Mr. Gallagher, Brother Bob Andrews, and Mr. Power, and the fun times I had on the track team, even though I wasn’t that good. They taught me life lessons that I use with my own students. I also wanted to say hello to Mr. Dougherty, Mr. Kilkelly, Mr. Harrison, Ms. Dupre, and Mr. Niklaus for making me understand what it means to be a teacher. And I especially want to say a special hello to Ms. Solari, as I help struggling math students and showed the patience that she had for me. I miss Molloy, and it’ll always be a part of my life.”
Robert Costello ’08 paid a visit to Molloy and let us know he recently spent 5 months studying at Australia National University in Canberra. Robert said it was an amazing experience and learned a lot about people and the world at large. He is currently back at Stony Brook University and looking for internships. Rob talked about his days as a retreat leader at Molloy, and he continues to volunteer for trips to Esopus, having accompanied students to the camp as recently as this past April. Rob described everyone he encountered at the Molloy over the years as “amazing people.” Rob said everyone was so open at Molloy, and they encouraged him to want to learn. “There’s so much to say about Molloy…”
