Welcome to the summer edition of The Beehive! As the school year draws to a close and students head off to enjoy the dog days of summer, Archbishop Molloy High School continues to buzz with activity. The library renovation is well underway, Coach Jack Curran is gearing up for his annual summer camps for baseball and basketball, and Freshman Camp is expecting over 100 incoming freshmen next week. It is truly a “Beehive” of activity. The Stanner Alumni Center will remain open during summer hours as we continue to welcome alumni back to their alma mater and keep them up to date on news around the school and upcoming events. If you have some time on your hands, now might be a good opportunity to browse the archives links located in the right-hand column if you’ve missed any Beehive issues this past school year. As always, you are a big part of the Beehive, so please keep writing or calling us, or stop by if you’re in the neighborhood!
Library Renovation
When Archbishop Molloy High School was completed in 1957 the library was a brand new facility with plenty to offer its students and faculty. Over the course of time, however, technology has evolved and the needs of students have changed. After over 50 years the library has remained integral, however it became clear that it needed to better reflect the times as well as Molloy’s educational standards. In 1998, William J. Murphy ‘42 made a major commitment through the Zephiriny Society to help provide some structural and cosmetic updates to the library (it was then named in Murphy’s honor), but Murphy’s contributions represented the only update to the facility since the school was built. With money raised by students and their families for the 2009 and 2010 Walk-A-Thons and your support of the Fund For Molloy in 2010/11 a full renovation of the library was green-lighted to begin in May 2011. Your generosity and continued support through the upcoming 2011/12 Fund For Molloy campaign will help ensure that the school will be able to complete this project without incurring any debt. The new library will boast improved functionality and will align with the evolving needs of current and future students by providing a new 40 student research lab (including wireless laptops for the use of Internet resources), a college preparatory center (benefiting juniors and seniors dedicated to the rigorous college application process), new lighting, climate control, a multi-media conference room, and a state-of-the-art library database. This update to the William J. Murphy Library is critical to providing Stanners the best possible resources to learn and grow as students and as good citizens in the world at large.
The project is being managed through the generosity of Stanner Hall of Famer Gino Fazio ’81 and his company G. Fazio Construction Co. Inc.,. Gino has always been involved at Molloy whether it be through alumni events, various construction projects (new Chemistry Lab in 2008, heating and ventilation in 2010), or serving as the outgoing Chairman of the School Directory. He is very happy to be overseeing the library renovation as it will directly affect countless young Stanners as well as Alumni who return to Molloy for various events that will take place in the multi-purpose space. We look forward to seeing the finished product as students return in September to embark on another school year. Keep reading The Beehive for ongoing coverage of the renovation.

Mike Gaertner ’69 says “Aloha from Maui!” Mike celebrated his 60th birthday with style on Friday, July 1st by sky diving for the first (and according to Mike “probably last”) time at Skydive Hawaii located on the north shore of the island of Oahu. Mike added he experienced “10 seconds of sheer terror followed by 6 minutes of exhilaration!” Mike extends an invitation to all Stanners visiting Maui to contact he and his wife (who have lived there since 2003) as they would be happy to provide a good dose of Island spirit. You can email Mike at gaertnersr@aol.com

Lejla Radoncic ‘08 is currently attending Seton Hall University with one final semester to go. She is hoping to visit Molloy sometime soon to, in her words, “See my amazing former teachers.” Seton Hall wrote an article about Lejla in a recent news publication and she would like to share it with the Stanner community. We are saddened to share news of the passing of Tom Corrigan ’76. Tom lost his battle with leukemia just months after his community rallied to his side in search of a donor for a bone barrow transplant (an event publicized in the Beehive in February). Tom was a former NYPD Detective and owner of Tom McBrien’s Pub on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. He is survived by his wife, Colleen, and his four children. Please say a special prayer for the Corrigan family.
We ask that you keep in your prayers Mr. Francis Gillespie, who passed away early last week. Mr. Gillespie is the father of four Stanner alumni: Pat ’83, Michael’ 90, Fran ’92 and John ’95. He will be missed. Keep the Gillespie family in your thoughts.
