Stanner Golf Classic A Big Success
The Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic always seems to exceed expectations. The 25th anniversary milestone outing on May 16, 2011 was no exception. This year’s outing raised a record $122,000, a 12% increase over last year, due to the time and financial support of so many people dedicated to Archbishop Molloy High School’s continued success and “par” for excellence. Because of a great amount of registered foursomes, donations, raffle tickets, journal sponsorships, corporate sponsorships, and auctions the Stanner Golf Classic was able to raise money for the Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith, and John Gibbons Scholarships, which will give future students at Molloy the opportunities they need to be a success. Maria Ford, Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith, and the entire golf committee did a fantastic job in preparation for the day, and for that we thank them once again.

We would like to announce that the Chairman for the 26th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic on May 7, 2012 will be none other than Charles “Chuck” Tabone ’68, dedicated Stanner and member of the golf committee for many, many years. Supporting Chuck and the golf outing, as he always does, will be A.J. Power ’84 as the Honorary Chairman. We are very excited to have these two great Stanners lead us to another successful outing next year. And as you may or may not have heard, President Richard Karsten ’81 promised sunshine on May 7, 2012 so mark your calendars now!
Dinner by President
Many great prizes were auctioned off at this year’s Stanner Golf Classic, but one unique prize has flown under the radar until now. Adrian Mariacher ’97 was the lucky auction winner of “Dinner by President”, a gourmet multi-course meal prepared by Molloy’s President and chef extraordinaire Richard Karsten ’81. The menu, which included a variety of wines (including several bottles generously donated by Jerry Schumm ’68), offered a first course of Crostini Three Ways (Classic Tomato Bruschetta, Pancetta & Asiago Cheese, Shrimp Parmesan), and a main course surf & turf including a Beefsteak Tomato, Fresh Mozzarella & Basil Tower for appetizer, followed by Herb Crusted Shrimp, and Filet Mignon with “Luger” style bacon. The main course was served with seasonal vegetables and Au Gratin potatoes. Crispy Creamy Cannoli for dessert rounded out the meal, which served 6 to 8 people. Adrian made sure to bring several of his close Stanner friends from the class of 1997, all of whom felt right at home back at Molloy. During the evening the group spent time walking the halls and revisiting some of their favorite hangouts from their days on Manton street. Speaking about the dinner with Mr. Karsten, Adrian (pictured to the right with his foursome at this year’s Stanner Golf Classic) had nothing but positive things to say. “The meal was fantastic,” said Adrian. “You made us feel right back at home at our beloved high school. The night exceeded my expectations and we all had a great time. We are thankful that you took the time to really get to know us.” Karsten also had very positive things to say, “It was a great evening, and a wonderful opportunity to make new friends. We’re very happy to bring Stanners to Molloy who may not have visited for quite some time. It’s always important to be reminded of your roots.” Karsten said that the experience went so well he hopes to auction another dinner off next year at the 26th Annual Stanner Golf Classic. Around the School
Jack Curran’s Basketball Camp
While students are off enjoying their summer vacation, a large number of aspiring athletes as well as those looking to stay active and learn have come together to participate in Coach Jack Curran’s annual summer basketball camp. The camp, held at Molloy in the Curran Gym during July, is open to boys and girls ages 6 and up looking to get some instruction from those who know best. Mr. Mike McCleary and Mr. John Martinson help coach camp-goers by leading drills and explaining basic techniques as well as some more advanced moves. Even Chris Dorgler ’11 (pictured under the net), who just wrapped up his stellar basketball career at Molloy this past season, has returned to help lead drills and guide the young athletes by providing some insight from his own recent experiences. We’re betting there are some future Stanners in this crop of young talent.

The Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run is scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd, 2011. As always the event is named in honor of Andrew Harvey ’98 who was killed in a tragic train accident during his junior year at Molloy. Andrew embodied the determination of an athlete and the commitment of a scholar, and he was well known around his community as well as around Molloy. Andrew’s memory lives on each year through the Fun Run and the scholarship established in his name. Click here to register online for this event, or download a printable registration form. Stanner Gathering at Bryant Park
Stanner Sightings are not particularly hard to come by. It seems wherever you look, or wherever you may be headed, a Stanner is never too far off. So it was no surprise that when a group of Molloy grads from the early 90s got together at the South Porch at Bryant Park that President Richard Karsten ’81 just happened to see Tim McGorry ’82 walking by. Tim was in luck as he was invited to join in on the festivities. The gathering was quite casual – just a way to catch up on old times and meet some new Stanners. After all, it’s always important to network, network, network! The group had many good laughs while some Stanners exchanged business cards. The space at the South Porch was provided with the help of Mike Garvey ’84, who has a working relationship through Wichcraft eateries with renowned chef and television personality Tom Colicchio. Special thanks to Mike and Mr. Colicchio for their hospitality in providing such a wonderful venue for this mini-reunion. Click the thumbnails above to enlarge. Major League Ready
Minor league first baseman Matt Rizzotti ’04 was recently highlighted by the sports website Rotoworld (pictured below) after one of his biggest games of the season. Matt is absolutely crushing the ball this year, and the baseball world is taking notice. Not long after the update on Rotoworld, Daily News contributor Brian Towey ’96, who wrote a wonderful article on Brother Bob Andrews in June, highlighted Rizzotti in his own half-page article. Towey touches on Rizzotti’s home life and having to leave his family for months at a time to pursue his dream. Towey also asks the budding first baseman how he feels about his chances at making the majors while being blocked by Ryan Howard in Philadelphia. Caught in the Moment
Several weeks ago Manhattan was taken over by international teen heart-throb Justin Bieber as he was in town for a slew of brief appearances. Needless to say, his visit led to a few chaotic moments throughout the city, which certainly made it a tough day for the NYPD and other city service men and women. One police officer in particular caught our attention – Officer Nick Minor ’04, whose photo appeared in one of the city’s larges newspaper publications. Nick is shown carrying a distressed girl away from an unruly crowd. Ed Najarro ’03, a fellow officer who works with Nick, called into the Stanner Alumni Center with the info. Ed also commented that he and other officers gave Nick his fair share of ribbing in regards to the photo: it ended up all over his locker.
Dennis Averill Archbishop Molloy class of 1976 and graduate of the University of Richmond, the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Public Health; and the JHU School of Business recently had his first book published by CRC Press entitled: “Lean Sustainability; Creating Safe, Enduring, and Profitable Operations.” The book describes how organizations can integrate their safety, sustainability, and Lean production processes to achieve sustained business growth that protects people, planet, and profit. Mr. Averill is currently Senior Manager for Safety, Health, and Environment for the international consumer products manufacturer Unilever.
Sean Collins ‘10 and Matt Catera ’10 were spotted on the Molloy track early this summer working out in fulfillment of their rigorous college workout schedules. Both were a part of championship squads at Molloy, a tradition that would follow them to their college careers. Matt, attending college at Albany, broke the school record in the Decathalon with 6,637 points. He is also proud of his performance at the USA Juniors competition where he ranked 7th. Sean set numerous records at Northeastern University, including holding the number 2 all time record for 400m hurdles. Since then Sean has transferred to Fordham University at Rose Hill and is studying business. Matt is a Human Biology major and is considering studying in a doctoral physical therapy program. Both he and Sean hope to work hard enough to earn a place at the NCAA Nationals, but that is more of a long-term goal. As for now, they are simply training together to get ready for next season. Matt spoke about Molloy, saying, “I loved Molloy. This is one of the best high school athletic programs around. The coaches were amazing…they really want their athletes to succeed and they give you every opportunity – you just have to take it.” Sean offered similar words, “Molloy gave me the best years of my life. Shout out to Brother Pat!” Both look forward to coming back to Molloy to help out with the track program from time to time.
