Mr. Smith Goes To…The Big Dance!
— update by Nick D’Arienzo
A loud Stanner shout-out, if you please, for Louisville sophomore guard Russ Smith, Molloy ’09, looking to help the Cardinals wend their way through the NCAA’s Western regionals this weekend, and hopefully onto New Orleans and the Final Four. Thursday’s 69-62 win over Davidson sure was a good way to start it all off.
Of course, you can also find Stanners providing outstanding commentary throughout The Dance, such as Kenny Smith ’83 for TNT, and on the women’s side, Rosalyn Gold-Onwude ’05 for ESPN. Stay tuned!
Lawyers Alumni Network Event
On March 7th, Matthew McLaughlin ’87 and Venable LLP graciously opened up their versatile event space at Rockefeller Center to Stanner lawyers of all skill levels for a very special evening. Alumni took part in the second Molloy Lawyers Alumni Network event, part of an ongoing series of programs focused on linking Stanner lawyers together and broadening their professional networks. The series is also designed to guide those individuals studying law in any capacity, as professionals in attendance offer advice to inquiring minds. To begin the evening, Matt reflected on the importance building the Lawyers Network. “It is fitting because we are a beehive,” he said. “Some remain in the hive and some move on, but the hive is always there. The Lawyers Network is a great extension for the members of our Beehive to stay connected for personal and professional growth.” This sentiment resonated with many in the room.
Following Matt’s introduction, Assistant Dean Robert J. Reilly ’68 of Fordham School of Law (Feerick Center for Social Justice) began a compelling presentation that touched on his extensive personal and professional experience. Dean Reilly expressed the importance of having strong written and verbal communication skills. He related to his fellow Stanners the tumultuous period of 1964 – 1968, the time in which he was a student at Molloy. During those years, teachers were tasked with distilling several historic global events including the Vietnam War, Vatican II, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy and John F. Kennedy. This period, which Dean Reilly called a transformational time in US History, helped shape him into an individual that diligently seeks justice for his fellow man. While those events certainly transcend the goals he tries to emulate at Fordham Law, they stay with him and help him. “Dean Reilly’s presentation was fascinating,” said Alumni Development Director Craig Katinas ’93. “His leadership is an extension of Champagnat’s vision for creating good citizens of the world. His school helps those living paycheck to paycheck who would not be able to afford professional counsel in a legal setting. His work makes a profound impact on the quality of their lives.” Molloy instilled the moral compass that Dean Reilly has applied to his work for the past 30 years, and he encouraged his fellow Stanners to reflect on their experiences as they move forward.
After Dean Reilly’s presentation, a brief Q&A was held before attendees enjoyed refreshments, good company and spirited conversation. A good time was surely had by all. Special thanks to Matthew McLaughlin, Venable LLP, and to the Lawyers Committee, whose leadership and dedication is truly outstanding. Keep reading The Beehive for more information on future Lawyers Network events.

Math Awareness Week
For some students, math can be an extremely daunting task (this has always been the case for one Beehive editor in particular). Others enjoy the manipulation of numbers and jump at the idea of problem solving. No matter how you feel about the subject, however, the math department here at Molloy wants you to know that “math is your friend.” Last week the department organized Math Awareness Week, an effort to promote critical thinking in fun and creative ways. “There’s more to it than finding x and doing areas and circumferences,” says Mr. Brian Klimas ’98. “Math is both useful and fun. With Math Awareness Week we also wanted students to see that there are many others in their classes who like math too. They’re never alone!” This was achieved through daily events including Math/Calculus Bowls, a mathematical scavenger hunt, an art contest, a SuDoKu challenge, and a poem/song competition. The most popular event was the scavenger hunt, which tasked student teams with cracking a sequence of numbers by finding various clues in different rooms throughout the school. Solving math problems would lead them to each clue. The winners, Daniella Gordillo ’13 and Monish Pahilajani ’13 received gift cards as rewards, as did other winners throughout the week. The turnout for each event proved that math has more than a few friends here at Molloy.

26th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic
At Archbishop Molloy High School the student always comes first. The education in mind, body and spirit fostered at Molloy offers a critical turning point in their lives, and it truly is a privilege that not many can boast. At times there are deserving students who, due to extenuating circumstances, would be unable to attend Molloy without the help of scholarships. Enter the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, which is Molloy’s largest annual fundraiser and all class reunion. The Classic has raised $1.9 million over the past 25 years in support of scholarships. Now in its 26th year, the Classic raises money for the Jim Kinnier Scholarship, the Joe Smith Scholarship, and the John Gibbons Memorial Scholarship to be given to deserving students who want to attend or remain at Molloy. These scholarships, named in honor of three extraordinary former teachers and the founders of the Stanner Golf Classic, are so important to providing the opportunities that so many of us are so thankful to have had. The importance of the Stanner Golf Classic is paramount, and it all begins with you.
Sponsoring a foursome entitles you to a round of golf at a prestigious private golf club on Long Island (either Plandome CC or North Hills CC) along with brunch, adult beverages and food both on the course and in the club house, dinner, shirt, hat and golf balls. There are additional door prizes to be had as well. These goodies don’t even take into account some great raffle prizes including 2 tickets to the Superbowl, a trip to Las Vegas, and a 40 inch HD television. Consider auction items like autographed sports memorabilia, vacation houses, event tickets, and a gourmet dinner prepared by Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81, and you have an event that is well worth the price! At $395 per person, sponsoring a foursome is a wonderful opportunity to have a great day on the greens, spend a day with friends, and have a chance to win some great prizes – all with Molloy students benefitting from your generosity. And don’t be shy if you’re just a Stanner and his buddy looking to play a round of golf. We often receive requests for only 1 or 2 registrations and always try to pair them with other Stanners in or close to their graduating year. And of course, golfers of any skill level are welcome to join in the day. Those looking to register a foursome through their corporate business can also enjoy a tax deduction from their sponsorship. If you would like to be a part of this great event, please contact 718.441.9210.

Non scholae sed vitae
Reverand Joseph Franco ’93 was recently featured in a Daily News article regarding his new leadership role in the local community. Rev. Franco, a priest at Sacret Heart Church for 8 years and pastor of the parish since 2010, is now Chair of the Board for the Northwest/South Bronx region and tasked with a critical reorganization of local Catholic schools in an effort to curtail financial losses by these institutions. In an era where enrollment has steadily decreased and tuition costs have been on the rise, Rev. Franco must now focus on making critical decisions that will not only impact numerous Bronx communities, but will hopefully bring Catholic schools to new heights of achievement and success moving forward. Rev. Franco will remain in his role as pastor at Sacred Heart while embracing his new duties, and he looks forward to the challenges ahead.
Class Updates
NYPD Inspector James Capaldo ’75 visited Molloy on Tuesday to serve as guest speaker in Mr. Ed Shannon’s Criminal Justice class. INSP. Capaldo currently works out of the Organized Crime Control Bureau (previously serving in a multitude of positions within the NYPD). INSP. Capaldo spoke about various forensic methods used to identify victims of crimes, how a detective might put clues together to finger a suspect, and the importance of fingerprint records in proving a suspect’s guilt. INSP. Capaldo discussed several cases that took place in New York City within the last 10 years to help illustrate his points. INSP. Capaldo was happy to visit, and even got a chance to catch up with Mr. Diorio for a while after class. The inspector has been active in Molloy’s Badges Alumni Network, attending several events in the past year.
