Stanner Alumni Reunion for 2’s & 7’s — RESCHEDULED
In the true Stanner Spirit, we’re giving one of Molloy’s biggest events of the year one more shot! Just days after Hurricane Sandy ripped through the east coast last October, Molloy had to cancel or postpone many of its events, including the highly anticipated annual alumni reunion. However, we are now happy to announce that the Stanner Alumni Reunion has officially been rescheduled for Saturday, March 23rd, 2013. The reunion is a unique opportunity for Stanners to come together and reminisce about about their experiences at Molloy and St. Ann’s Academy. More importantly, it is a chance for all alumni to return home and reconnect with their classmates and teachers. Those reuniting on March 23rd include the Classes of 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007. The evening’s schedule is as follows:
- 5:00pm – Mass of Remembrance (Ralph DeChiaro Theater)
- 6:00pm – 25th, 50th & 60th Anniversary Medal Presentations for Classes of 1987, 1962 & 1952.
- 6:30pm – Cocktails, Dinner & Dancing
Please help us spread word of the new date to your classmates. If you already registered for the reunion during the Fall, you are still currently on your class’ attendance list. However, we ask that you please contact us at (718) 441-9210 to confirm your attendance. If you did not register already: single admission is $100 while a couple can register for $150. The class of 1962 plus guest will enjoy complimentary admission in honor of their 50th anniversary. The class of 2007 will enjoy a reduced rate of $50 for a single admission and $100 for a couple’s admission in honor of their 5th anniversary.

Around the School
Storm Recovery Week a Huge Success
Last week, the Molloy community came out in full force in their continued efforts to help Hurricane Sandy victims. Donations of winter clothing, non-perishable foods, medical items and hygiene products were collected each day for families around the tri-state area who need them most – especially as we prepare for the potentially cold winter ahead. Donations were also accepted during Molloy’s triple header sweep against St. Anthony’s, with proceeds from admissions, concessions and a student bake sale going directly to Molloy’s Storm Recovery Fund. More than 2 dozen students came to Molloy on Saturday, December 1st to organize all the items that were donated throughout the week before helping to load them into ambulates for delivery. According to Principal Br. Thomas Schady, “The food was all delivered to Nazareth Housing, located in Manhattan. The food is benefiting those affected by Sandy as well as the homeless. All coats and clothing were brought to the Salvation Army, who are in turn bringing them to the people in areas affected by Sandy. Lastly, medical and cleaning supplies were collected by Glen Oaks Volunteer Fire Department.” All of us here at Molloy is extremely thankful to everyonewho brought donations to the school to support Storm Recovery Week. Your generosity is just another example of the Marist Tradition at work.
The Dr. Robert Englert Fellowship
Students at Archbishop Molloy High School are often given unique opportunities to engage in educational and service-oriented after school activities. Working with the Guidance Department, students are also able to gain an edge in their professional development. As an extension of our professional networking groups, Molloy has worked with alumni to place students in fellowship/internship positions within institutions where they can succeed. In this way, Dr. Robert Hayes ’70, founder of the Coalition for the Homeless, was central to the creation of the Dr. Robert Englert Fellowship. Dr. Englert (pictured) was an integral part of Molloy’s faculty for many years. His passion for helping students stands out in the minds of many to this day. By pioneering this fellowship, Dr. Hayes is able to do his part as an alumnus to “pay it forward” while at the same time highlighting a man who spent much of his life inspiring others to look more closely at humanitarian and social issues. In the case of Cara Salvatore, a current senior at Molloy, a winning essay and an impressive phone interview set up by her college guidance counselors led to an exciting summer fellowship in the fast-paced environment of the Medicare Rights Center in Manhattan. The MRC presented a totally new work experience for Cara, who has already established herself as an exceptional student over the past 3 years. While she brought her usual tenacious self to the office on day one, she was admittedly a bit nervous in her new surroundings. Still, her strong work ethic began to shine through as she was quickly accepted as a member of her team. “I felt respected,” says Cara.
Cara’s fellowship began with observing several other team members during their everyday routines. Her initial exposure to daily operations included attending a meeting hosted by MetLife as well as the viewing of a debate in Washington D.C. According to Cara, “Both occurrences provided me with a glimpse into how the operations of the Medicare Rights Center work with the decisions of leaders in the business, political and medical worlds.” Cara arrived to the office each day ready to learn something new. As she gained more experience, she was handed greater responsibilities. One of the biggest highlights for Cara included trying to get a message straight to the CEO of Pfizer. ” That was definitely exciting. My numerous tasks introduced me to the diverse roles of employees,” says Cara. “They also exemplified the mentality that the organization’s success stems from the hard work of each of its parts.” Cara was able to grow in part because of the level of trust she established with her employers. The fellowship ended with handshakes all around, as Cara eventually returned to Molloy in September with her head held high. Having been put in a position to succeed right from the start, Cara looks forward to reaping the benefits from this opportunity. As she looks toward applying for colleges including NYU BPE, Georgetown, Macaulay Honors (Baruch), Princeton, Yale and Hofstra, Cara will boast wonderful credentials that will surely land her exactly where she wants to be.
Michael Sullivan ’78 recently wrote an article for the Northport Patch about one of the most beloved figures in the history of Stanner High. “The Man With The Booming Voice” is a brief piece, yet it is rich in Molloy lore, touching on the genuine good nature and kindheartedness of Brother Leo Richard, FMS. Br. Leo, a Stanner Hall of Famer, had a positive impact on the lives of many students who called Manton Street home, and Michael Sullivan was no exception. Even now, Michael feels Br. Leo’s presence in his life, and it is something he is truly thankful for. We recommend taking a few moments to read Michael’s piece, as you will surely recall that booming voice and all that it stood for.
Dedicated teacher and track coach Mr. Joe Dombrowski is a resident of Breezy Point. While Mr. Dombrowski’s house was spared during the terrible fire that swept through his southern Queens neighborhood, it still suffered damage during the storm. Now in the recovery process, Mr. Dombrowski has been tasked with some massive cleanup. Fortunately, after years of coaching and teaching some of Molloy’s most talented athletes, a number of Mr. Dombrowski’s former runners stopped by his Breezy home to “return the favor.” Pictured with Mr. Dombrowski (Holy Cross ’74) are Matt Catera ’10, Kevin Ginter ’10, Brittany Dombrowski ’09, Dylan Dombrowski ’07, Stephen Ginter 06, Anthony Tufano ’07, Darius Sileikis ’06, Sean Collins’10, Mike Nola ’03, Peter Kramer ’10, Ian Fitts’07, Maggie Bolan ’09, Rebecca Power ’08, and Sean Ginter ’08.
Joseph Capritto ’98 is currently working at Forest Laboratories in Commack, NY as a Scientist Level II in the Pharmaceutical Research and Development department. He has worked in this role for the past five years. Joseph was married to Julie Tokash (Christ the King ’97) on August 14, 2011, and after just over a year, Joseph and Julie welcomed two new additions to their family. On August 16, 2012, twins Leonardo Joseph Capritto and Daniella Kate Capritto were happy to be in the fold.
We are saddened to share news of the passing of John DiGirolamo Sr., father of John DiGirolamo ’64. John Jr. described his father as a good man, and one who adored children. He was loving and caring to his family and friends as well as active in his church community. John would like to ask the Stanner community to say a prayer for his father.
