Molloy Students Show Giving Spirit
On November 15th, over 40 students were invited to represent Archbishop Molloy High School on the CBS Early Show. Students were supporting the initiative being sponsored by the corporate partnership of Lands’ End and the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH), donating their extra, unused coats for the benefit of the less fortunate. During the holiday season it is important to remember all those that are struggling in today’s world, and Molloy students have a great education in the spirit of giving. Thanks to Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85, and other Marist Brothers and faculty, Molloy has been holding clothing, food, and Christmas toy drives on its campus for many years – and students continue to be receptive to donating and helping others. In addition, the NCH was originally founded by Stanner Hall of Famer Robert M. Hayes ’70 in the late 1970s. Hayes also led the New York Coalition for the Homeless and fought to provide shelter for homeless men, women, and families in New York City through 1989. CBS Early Show anchors Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, and Erica Hill greeted Molloy’s students and spoke off camera about the cause they were supporting and about Archbishop Molloy High School. Following the live telecast, the students were invited into the Early Show studio for a tour of the busy atmosphere and the hi-tech equipment needed to bring the show to audiences across the country. Harry Smith fielded questions from the students and explained his path to becoming a news anchor for CBS. He offered advice and encouraged them to stay motivated in achieving their goals. Thank you to Mike Germano and Br. Thomas Schady for helping to bring Archbishop Molloy High School to the national spotlight in the name of a good cause. Otoja Abit ’03 recently visited the Stanner Alumni Center and updated us on his busy life. Otoja earned a degree in communications and business at St. John’s University in 2008. He also played basketball at St. John’s in addition to playing at Molloy. Otoja talked about how Molloy taught him how to be disciplined, and how it prepares its students to be the best people they can be. On staying in touch with his alma mater he said, “I’d feel bad if I didn’t say hello.” Upon graduating from St. John’s, Otoja began his acting and modeling career after receiving advice from a trusted contact. He created an audition tape and within a year of his career landed a role as a cast member on Fox Reality channel’s TV series “Seducing Cindy” starring Internet celebrity Cindy Margolis. Otoja recalled having Cindy’s picture up in his locker in Molloy and how surreal it felt kissing her just a few years later. Otoja shot a scene with actress Anne Heche in the indie film “That’s What She Said” and later found work with Onion Sports News as a Dayplayer. Otoja acted as Joe Conte in “The Mission” at the New York International Fringe Festival, which is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. He has since landed a spot on the crew for the Broadway production of “That Championship Season”, a 1972 play written by Jason Miller now directed by TONY nominee Gregory Mosher. Otoja mentioned his respect for Coach Jack Curran saying, “The discipline sports gave me has helped me stay focused and determined in my career.” He is comfortable working his way up in the business. “Acting is hard work, but you can’t quit. Have love and passion for it, and you will make something of yourself.” Otoja has continued to do modeling work on the side in addition to his acting endeavors.
