27th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic
Archbishop Molloy High School is proud to present the 27th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic on Monday, May 6th, 2013. The Classic is Molloy’s largest all class reunion, bringing alumni, parents, families, friends and business associates together for an exceptional round of golf and so much more. The Classic’s roots date back to the mid 1980’s when event founders Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith and John Gibbons accompanied a group of alumni, many from the Classes of 1978 and 1979, (including Charlie McBride, Joe Howard and Jerry Betts), to Rock Hill Golf Club in Manorville on Long Island. What began as a simple game of golf turned out to be much more, as surprise donations were collected for the benefit of Molloy students. Following the success of the first outing, and recognizing the great potential this event held, Jim, Joe and John, a.k.a. “The Three Amigos,” put their heads together. After recruiting a Committee and working with Molloy administration, the Stanner Golf Classic was born.
Now in its 27th year, the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic continues to benefit students at Molloy by using funds raised to support the school’s Scholarship Program. This program helps future and present deserving students to become and remain enrolled at Molloy. This is a privilege for many, as the education in the Marist Tradition that students receive at Molloy prepares them soundly in the knowledge, leadership and faith they will need to meet the challenges of college and beyond. Not only do Stanners enjoy a sunny day on the greens, but they also help deserving students continue to excel at Molloy.
This year’s Classic takes place at two premier golf courses on Long Island: North Hills Country Club and Plandome Country Club. The day begins with registration and brunch at 9:30 AM followed by a shotgun start at 11:15 AM. Each golfer will receive a shirt, hat, golf balls and a bag of goodies. Food and adult beverages are served on the course while contests and prizes are offered throughout your game. You can try for the longest drive, closest to the pin, or even a brand new Mercedez-Benz with a hole in one. Dinner, cocktails, silent auction, and our live auction will take place at 5:00 PM followed by the raffle drawing. There will be some wonderful prizes up for grabs. We expect the items up for auction to drop some jaws. The raffle prizes are equally remarkable, with a trip for 2 to Super Bowl XLVIII as the top prize. This great day of golf, camaraderie, food, drinks and prizes is just $400 per person.
We look forward to having you be a part of the fun! If you would like more information on registering for the Stanner Golf Classic, purchasing a journal ad, setting up a sponsorship or purchasing raffle tickets, please contact Maria Ford at (718) 943-3186 or email mford@molloyhs.org. Please inquire if your company would like to participate as a corporate sponsor. Your continued generosity and commitment to the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic and Archbishop Molloy High School is truly appreciated.
Stanners Rally For Storm Recovery
Last Friday, alumni and friends gathered at Park Avenue Tavern to raise money for Molloy’s Storm Recovery Fund. The fund, established in November, focuses on relieving some of the financial burden that many of our students’ families continue to face months after the storm. The fund helps these families in several ways:
- Offering tuition assistance for those students and their families most impacted by this unprecedented storm.
- Providing the appropriate counseling services for Molloy students as they cope with the long-term effects Hurricane Sandy has had on their lives and the lives of their loved ones, many of whom are now emotionally and / or physically displaced.
- Making available basic school essentials such as uniforms, workbooks/textbooks, school supplies and cafeteria credit.
While alumni enjoyed some vibrant conversation after a long work week, nearly $2,000 was raised during the Happy Hour for the Storm Recovery Fund. Every donation goes a long way, and the families that have been helped to this point have all been extremely thankful for the love and support our community has shown them. If you would like to learn more about the Storm Recovery Fund, please call the Stanner Alumni Center at (718) 441-9210, or CLICK HERE to make an online donation. We thank you for your continued generosity. Special thanks to Rich Flanagan ’84 and the Park Avenue Tavern for their help in hosting this event.

SADD Awareness Week
For many alumni, SADD may hold a different meaning than what it might for students today. Previously known as “Students Against Drunk Driving,” SADD has expanded its mission in recent years. Now “Students Against Destructive Decisions,” teenagers across the country are given a platform to rally together in one voice in an effort to educate their peers and raise awareness about the causes and effects of poor decision making. This prevention initiative is extremely important for teenagers to embrace since they can often be quite impressionable. “We want our students to think before they act,” says English teacher and club moderator Ms. Kelly Edelman. “Members of the club have been very proactive this year, which is why we have been able to have SADD Awareness Week. Even though the club is only open to juniors and seniors to join, this week is a time when all class years can learn about SADD’s mission.” The goal of SADD Awareness Week is to shine a spotlight on many of the activities that high school students should and should not participate in, as well as ways to perform good safety habits. Specifically, students have spoken out against consumption of alcohol by minors as well as texting while driving. “The students felt that raising awareness about the danger of texting and driving was very important,” said Ms. Edelman. “They realize that this is becoming a growing problem in our culture and it needs to be addressed. It’s important to get the right idea in their head before they get behind the wheel.” Similarly, SADD has also reminded their peers that entering a vehicle with a driver that has been drinking is not a responsible decision, while adherence to primary safety belt laws is the right call. In order to spread the word, SADD has rallied students throughout the week to sign pledges, participate in after school activities and purchase awareness bracelets. “The Bracelets read ‘Stay Driven,’ meaning stay focused on making the right decisions,” explains Ms. Edelman. Funds from bracelets sales, as well as those from a bake sale before tomorrow’s Girls Varsity basketball game, will be donated directly to the national SADD organization, which in turn helps each chapter across the country continue to keep students educated about proper decision making.
Helping Each Other In Tough Times
Last week, Stanners affected by Hurricane Sandy, as well as a supporting cast of friends, gathered in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater for a visit from Barry and Katherine Lemoine, William Schneider and Alex Le Pres of The Voices Foundation. Made up of Louisiana natives who survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005, this non-profit organization and performing theater group often travels to areas affected by the forces of nature to discuss the effects these events have on survivors and how they can best cope with their new realities. One of the main points of the presentation was the importance of neighbors coming together to help one another. In the face of hardship, relying on each other can be the best method toward perseverance. William recalled his story, in which he was forced to move to a completely different city and accept food, shelter and clothing from complete strangers. While telling his tale, he was nearly brought to tears at the thought of these men and women, whom he had never met, unconditionally coming to his aid. Some happiness did come to Barry through tragedy as he revealed that serendipity not only brought the three of them together, but even resulted in his marriage to Katherine. “Remember that there is always life after tragedy,” said Barry. “With life comes hope. Things will come together in time.” In the cases of Barry, Katherine and William, they forced the change in their own lives by taking up theater, creating the production Voices of Louisiana and hitting the road to perform topical comedy shows to help ease people’s heartache. “Comedy is universal,” said Barry. “We wanted to spin some positivity and be ambassadors for our own people. We also wanted to show that there has been a rebirth in Louisiana, which is encouraging to others who have seen their own hometowns destroyed.” What led Barry, Katherine and Alex back to Molloy in 2013 was not just the opportunity to help after Hurricane Sandy. Barry revealed that Voices of Louisiana had performed their comedy show at Molloy in February 2006, and 7 years later they were honored to be able to share their thoughts and experiences with Molloy students affected by Sandy. Special thanks to The Voices Foundation and Molloy’s Guidance Department for helping to set up this informative visit for our students.
Students Collect Donations
Earlier this week, students in Mr. Santos’ classes once again collected donations for the NY-based charitable not-for-profit organization Operation Dreamcatchers. Founded by Melissa Bhikham ’08, Melissa Buchan ’08 and Stacy Lalman ’08, Operation Dreamcatchers raises medical and health-related supplies for underprivileged medical facilities across the globe. Most recently, efforts have been focused in Guyana where these items have been desperately needed by many local hospitals. Having witnessed the drastic situation first hand, the founders of Operation Dreamcatchers remain in close contact with Mr. Santos to make sure that students are aware of the very important needs of others. In turn, this month’s donations gathered by Mr. Santos and his students include bandages, medical gloves, crutches, and various other medical tools. Pictured with donations are Victoria Stawowy ’14, Sarah Yunus ’14, Patrick Merre ’14 and Adrian Ramsaroop ’14. Visit the Operation Dreamcatchers Homepage for more information on this cause, plus details about their upcoming Fourth Annual Dinner Dance.

Jim Carrino ’58, currently located in Raleigh, North Carolina, was unable to attend the previously scheduled (now postponed) Curran Gym Rededication. However, Jim sent us warm thoughts about his lasting memories from Molloy (Pictured below: Page 114 from the 1958 Blue & White Yearbook. Jim Carrino is pictured top left with his Varsity teammates.):
“The Molloy gymnasium still has a special place in my life. You see, having been a member on the first basketball team at Molloy (the 1957-1958 season) and the only undefeated team in the school’s history, (32-0), I had the pleasure of playing in the first game ever played there with Lou Carnesseca as our coach. This team, as a whole, was inducted into the Molloy Hall of Fame in 2007, at the NYAC. I believe, if it were possible, this gymnasium deserves the same honor considering it has had some of the greatest NYC high school basketball players perform on its floor! May it have another wonderful 56 years. Congrats Coach Curran.” — Jim Carrino ’58
Ron Mergenthaler ’75 has been feeling very fortunate lately, as the Stanner alum recently underwent a successful kidney transplant. The other great part of this story? Ron is also extremely grateful to his donor – Ed Mergenthaler. The brothers are both doing well during their recovery.

Henry Torre ’79 asks that the alumni community pray for his wife of 24 years, Anne Marie Torre. Anne passed away on January 4th after battling breast cancer. Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
