Stanner Golf Classic – Monday, May 6th
People often find many different ways to give back to their alma mater. Whether volunteering one’s time, attending a fundraiser, or making a donation, each of these vehicles proves to be paramount in sustaining the success of present and future students. At Molloy, there are countless opportunities to “pay it forward.” One of the most engaging and hands-on efforts open to all members of our community is the Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, Molloy’s annual alumni golf outing. The Classic is our school’s largest all class reunion, bringing classmates, parents, friends, and even business associates together for a full day of golf, camaraderie, prizes, and much more.
The 27th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic is all set for Monday, May 6th – less than 2 weeks away. Taking place at North Hills Country Club and Plandome Country Club, two premier private golf courses on Long Island, the Classic invites all members of our Stanner community to come enjoy a round of golf that will not only sharpen your game, but will also support Archbishop Molloy High School’s Scholarship program. This program allows deserving present and future students the opportunity to receive the
outstanding education in the Marist Tradition that Molloy offers. To date, the Stanner Golf Classic has raised over $2 million for Molloy Scholarships, and that is truly a “hole in one.” Pictured: Mikayla Roberts ’16 and Jake Mella ’16, last year’s recipients of the John Gibbons Memorial Scholarship and the Jim Kinnier Scholarship.
This year, Molloy honors Neal Duffy ‘93 as Golf Chairman. Neal, a real estate management professional, has been a member of the Stanner Golf Classic Board since 2005 and a dedicated alumnus for 20 years. According to Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81, “Neal has been an energetic champion for positive change and innovation for the Classic, and his focus on new sponsorships as Chair has been remarkable.” For Neal, it’s easy to volunteer his time to his alma mater. “I owe my career to Molloy,” Neal states boldly. “Esopus taught me to ‘Take what you want, but eat what you take.’ It’s about giving back.”
Supporting Ne
al once again is the Stanner Alumni Center’s own Maria Ford. This is not a typical year for our Alumni Relations Director, however, as Maria is being honored as Honorary Chairperson. There is perhaps no one more deserving of this honor than Maria, who has worked tirelessly toward the success of the Stanner Golf Classic for 17 years. As a Stanner spouse and parent, she knows the importance of a Molloy education, and raising money to help our Stanners is always her top priority.
For $400 golfers receive a round of golf, a hat, golf shirt, sleeve of golf balls and a bag of assorted golf items. The day begins with registration and brunch at 9:30am followed by a shotgun start at 11:15am. Food and adult beverages are served on the course, including a cigar and scotch hole, while contests and prizes are offered throughout your game. You can try for the longest drive, closest to the pin, or a brand new Mercedes Benz with a hole in one. Cocktails, dinner, silent auction, and our
live auction begin at 5:00pm. Raffle tickets are on sale for $20 each, and if you haven’t heard, the prizes are stunning! The third prize raffle winner will receive a crystal clear 40 Inch Sharp TV. Second prize reels in a 4 day, 3 night stay in Las Vegas for two guests (airfare and hotel included). The first prize raffle winner will become the proud owner of two tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium. The auction items up for bidding will be equally impressive, and lunch with NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly ‘59, dinner at Rao’s Restaurant in Manhattan, and dinner prepared by President Karsten are expected to be amongst the hottest items. If bidding isn’t your style, don’t worry. 50% of all golfers receive a door prize when checking in. You’ll have a excellent chance to walk away from the Stanner Golf Classic with some great prizes.
Additionally, the John Gibbons Memorial Golf Trophy, established in 2008 by Tom Bradley ‘74 in honor of the late Gibbons, will be awarded to the foursome from each course with the best score. Please note you must have a Molloy alumnus in your foursome to be eligible for this honor.
Around the School
Molloy Hosts First Music & Arts Festival
This April, Molloy added a new twist to its annual Spring Concert Series by rebranding it as the school’s First Annual Music & Arts Festival. On Sunday, April 21st, students and their families filled Molloy for a great afternoon of musical performances and art appreciation. Performances in the Jack Curran Gymnasium were provided by the school band, guitar and string ensembles, and the freshman/sophomore chorus and junior/senior chorus. In addition, a gallery of impressive art pieces created by Molloy students was set up in the William J. Murphy Library as well as other spots throughout the school. Molloy’s music and art programs cultivate very talented students, and they were very excited to have their work recognized in such a prominent way. “The combined resources of our art and music departments created a most positive atmosphere for a wonderful afternoon,” said Br. Thomas Schady, Molloy’s Principal. “The event was well received by some 400 guests, and we’re hoping to increase that number next year and in the years to come.”
Students Visit Colleges in Upstate NY
A group of students took advantage of an amazing opportunity, as they went on a college tour near Rochester, New York in an effort to give them different perspectives on some of their potential school destinations. Students visited SUNY Geneseo, The University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and St. John Fisher College. “These kinds of trips offer a great opportunity for students to really get a sense of which campuses are good fits for them,” explains Ms. Christine Loo, a College Guidance Counselor at Molloy who helped plan the trip to Rochester. “Molloy tries to provide these experiences because they can be invaluable in making the right college choices.” The trip was sponsored by St. John Fisher College, alma mater of Molloy alum Mike O’Connor ’69, who also helped plan the trip for our Stanners. “I got a great feel for how college life works. I’d go again in a heartbeat,” said junior student Ryan Quigley ’14. Another junior, Miranda Steinberg, was equally pleased with the trip. “It helped to see the schools on my own because now I feel more confident in the decision making process.” “It was a great experience,” said College Guidance Counselor Mr. Ted McGuinness ’81, who accompanied the students on the trip. “We all learned quite a bit about these schools, and I think the students were very impressed with what they saw.”

Memorial Mass for Brother Francis Regis
On December 20th, 2012, Molloy lost one of its true giants, as Brother Francis Regis passed away at the age of 78. Br. Regis was the epitome of what it means to be Marist, and he positively impacted the lives of countless Stanners for decades. Molloy will remember Br. Regis during a special Memorial Mass on Thursday, May 9th at 12:30pm in the Jack Curran Gymnasium. We invite all alumni to attend this Mass and help us in remembering our teacher, mentor and friend, Brother Regis.

Joanne Raptis ’12 was recently profiled in the Columbia Daily Spectator, the student newspaper of Columbia University. In the article, Joanne, a first year Barnard student who also contributes to the Columbia online art community, discusses many aspects of her work, including her first inspiration to draw as a 6th grader watching cartoons. Joanne was inspired to create her own stories, and drawing comic strips quickly became part of the equation. She would continue to refine her skills through high school while also taking an interest in acting and performing arts with the Stanner Players. Now at Barnard, Joanne hopes that the school will help her develop “other parts” of herself as she continues her artistic journey. “Art is a very intrinsic thing…For now I’m doing it because it makes me happy, and I try to see what I find beautiful and hopefully others agree,” Joanne tells the Spectator. We ask that our Stanner community please pray for the repose of the soul of Mrs. Rosana Maurer, mother of senior student John Maurer. Please keep the entire Maurer family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.
