Class of 2013 Earns $40 Million in Scholarships,
Looks Ahead to Meeting New Challenges
On Saturday, June 1st, Molloy held its 121st commencement ceremony for the Class of 2013 at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College. Molloy’s latest graduates have come to the end of their high school journey. While it was great fun at times, and challenging at others, it was an experience that not only enriched them in many ways, but also prepared them for what lies ahead in college and beyond. As they look toward the future, the Class of 2013 can move ahead confidently knowing they made a lasting impact at Molloy.
The Class of 2013 carried on the great tradition of excellence that Stanners have since 1892, with 100% attending college and earning Regents diplomas. In addition, 90% of the Class of 2013 enrolled in college credit courses while attending Molloy, while 80% won college scholarships totaling over $40 million. Our graduates will also be attending some of the top universities in the country, including Boston College, Boston University, Brown University, Columbia University, Cooper Union, Drew University, Fordham, Ithaca, James Madison, Loyola Maryland, Marist College, Macaulay Honors College, Muhlenberg, NYU, Northeastern, Ohio State, Pepperdine, Rensselaer, SUNY – Binghamton, SUNY – Geneseo, Stevens Institute of Technology, St. John’s University, Temple University, Tufts University, and Villanova – just to name a few. One student will even be attending the University College of Dublin! Wherever our students find themselves this Fall, we are sure they will be ready to continue their hard work, making an impact well beyond Molloy.
Salutatorian Shibin Mathews spoke to his fellow graduates during the commencement ceremony. “Four years ago, we sat in the bleachers of the gym, not quite in the orderly, Stannerly fashion we are sitting in now, but certainly with the same sense of brimming anticipation.” Mathews continued, “Most of us sat among strangers, scanning the crowd for a familiar grammar school face. Today, we sit among our Molloy family. And together, we have finally made it.” Mathews believed there was something very important that brought them all together. “We were driven by some passion, some innate desire to try our best at everything we do. And that ambition will lead us out the doors of Molloy, into college, and to the outside world.”
Valedictorian Tatiana Requijo’s remarks were inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “When you discover what you will be in your life, set out to do it as if God Almighty called you at this particular moment in history to do it.” Requijo then shared her own words. “We have discovered ourselves and who we want to be in our lives. We have discovered God and the mentors who will help us become better people. We have discovered how to integrate these findings to go out and change the world. As we have discovered these things, we have truly become Stanners. We now know our purpose: to act Not for school, But for life.” Requijo continued to celebrate the day as a new beginning. “We see graduation as an ending, the closing of our adolescence. However, as one chapter ends, another one begins. The word “Commencement” itself shows us that graduating is not meant for us to forget all we have learned, but to boost us into applying all of our new knowledge.”
As the ceremony came to a close, our Stanners walked together for the first time as prominent alumni of Archbishop Molloy High School. It would not be the last time the Class of 2013 would gather that week, however, as they returned on Monday, June 3rd for the Graduation Breakfast at Molloy. A more recent tradition, this breakfast gives our students one more opportunity to say their goodbyes, sign yearbooks, and reminisce about the good times. Still, there are many good times ahead, and President Richard Karsten ’81 reminded them that they will all be together again in 2018 for their 5th anniversary reunion. Until then, we wish all of our graduates much success, and offer an invitation to them to come back to Molloy and visit any time to keep us informed about the next chapter in their journey.

Hance Family Foundation Teams With Molloy
Ms. Kristen DeSantis, a member of Molloy’s Guidance Staff, recently worked with the Hance Family Foundation to help bring their special initiative to Stanner High. “Beautiful Me” is a self-esteem program designed to educate females by promoting appreciation for their genuine qualities, accurate self-awareness, and the satisfaction of helping others. This project is designed to teach girls of all ages how to think positively and with assurance about their bodies, their skills, and their relationships with others. Instructors guide discussions to also include important friendship-building skills and key concepts necessary for building and protecting the participants’ individual gifts and talents. To date, the Beautiful Me project has over 6,000 participants, including many from high schools in New York City. Here at Molloy, peer group leaders and other students attended the after school “Beautiful Me” event in the Ralph DeChiaro Theater, acknowledging the importance of building high self-esteem as well as encouraging each other. The event was a huge success and our Stanners were very thankful for the Hance Family Foundation’s visit. You can find the Hance Foundation on Facebook, so be sure to pay them a visit and “like” their outstanding efforts. (Photos courtesy of The Hance Family Foundation)
Jack Curran Memorial Camps
While Summer has meant vacation for many, for Jack Curran it was always about dedicating 4 weeks to grooming the next great young talents. Hundreds of kids have participated in Jack Curran Camps over the years, and in continuing to remember Coach, these camps have been renamed the Jack Curran Memorial Basketball and Baseball Camps. Offering two week sessions of both basketball and baseball instruction, each camp teaches enthusiastic pre-teens and teenagers of various skill levels the techniques and nuances of these sports – just like Coach Curran taught so many outstanding players for over 55 years. While it won’t be quite the same without Coach Curran, he will surely be there in spirit, watching each camper as they run drills, play games and learn from talented volunteer Stanners who once trained under his tutelage. Registration begins soon! Basketball sessions begin July 9th while baseball sessions begin July 30th. Alumni interested in enrolling their child(ren) in the Jack Curran Memorial Camps should DOWNLOAD THIS FLYER for more information or visit jackcurrancamps.com for important downloadable forms.

Another year gone by, another impressive showing by The Stanner editorial staff at The Tablet’s Annual High School Press Awards. Molloy’s young journalists took home a record total of 14 prizes, including half of the 12 first place awards up for grabs. One of eight student newspapers competing for top recognition, The Stanner is a long-standing tradition dating back to the days at St. Ann’s Academy. Derek Sokolowski ’11, who just finished up his second year at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, won CUNY’s photo competition for the month of May. Derek’s photo, “Outdoor Zumba” captures a Zumba class taking place on the Jay Walk on campus. “What I find interesting about this photo is that while the instructors do their Zumba exercise, you can see how everyone is trying to follow along at that exact moment,” explained Derek. “What I enjoy doing in my spare time is to take photos of events and photos of people. Afterwards, editing the photos just makes you go ‘Whoa, I can’t believe I took this photo,’” said Derek. A forensic science major, Derek intends to go to graduate school and seek a combined M.S./J.D. in forensic science and law. His ideal career would be running a forensics lab while having a photography business on the side. (To see more winning photos, visit CUNY)
