The Br. Ron Marcellin Scholarship Dinner & Raffle is a little over just one week away! Every January, alumni and friends come together to help carry on the legacy of Br. Ron Marcellin by doing what he did best: help students in need. Since the inception of the Br. Ron event and subsequent scholarship fund, countless Stanners have received emergency assistance, psychological counseling, and, in recent years, the gift of education with a full scholarship. Money raised through the upcoming event admissions, donations, auctions, and sale of raffle tickets will directly fund The Brother Ron Marcellin Memorial Scholarship, which in turn will help students who need it most. This event has become one of the most cherished traditions in recent Stanner history because of the impact Br. Ron had on a great number of students spanning several decades. His leadership and guidance influenced literally generations of Stanners, and continuing his work is a natural progression for our alumni, who wish only to give back as Br. Ron would. There are some great auction and raffle prizes up for grabs to help accomplish these goals, including:

David M. Hawkins ’86 Inducted as Judge
The Honorable David M. Hawkins ’86 has been inducted as Judge of the Civil Court in Queens County, 1st District. Judge Hawkins was born and raised in Queens. After graduating from Molloy, he attended SUNY Buffalo and later Albany Law School where he earned his juris doctorate (JD) in 1993. Early professional experience saw him working for the Senior Citizen’s Division of the Legal Aid Society in Suffolk County. In that capacity he helped seniors obtain and keep their health care and benefits while also defending seniors from mortgage foreclosures brought on by unscrupulous mortgage brokers and lenders. He later used this experience to draft legislation titled “The Home Equity Fraud Act” which was introduced in the New York State Assembly. Before his induction, Judge Hawkins was most recently the Principal Law Secretary to the Honorable Ira Margulis and practiced in the Queens County Criminal Court – coincidentally not far at all from his alma mater in Briarwood. While working with Judge Margulis, Judge Hawkins has drafted thousands of decisions and orders and has assisted and performed legal research for more than fifty jury trials. At his induction, fellow Stanner Fr. Frank Shannon ’76 provided some brief opening remarks as well as an invocation, while Molloy President Richard Karsten ’81 and Alumni Development Director Craig Katinas ’93, teacher Lou Santos, and Administrative Assistant for Students Ed Shannon ’84 were in attendance to witness Judge Hawkins’ great accomplishment.
Around the School
Alumni Return for Advent Liturgy
Several days before Christmas, students, faculty and alumni gathered for Molloy’s annual Advent Liturgy as a way to prepare spiritually as one community. The Liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Frank Shannon ’75, featured performances by members of Molloy’s chorus as well as its Liturgy Committee. The committee’s presentations took place shortly before the Gospel and focused in part on the origin of St. Nicholas and Santa Claus. Director of Campus Ministry Mr. Mike Germano ’93 was quoted in the December issue of The Stanner saying, “the Liturgy Committee always tries to add a new twist.” Germano also spoke with reporter Katlin Stath ’15 about why students should attend the school’s Liturgies throughout the year. “It’s important to celebrate the Eucharist around friends. Being around your friends at school makes it different from your everyday Mass.” The same can be said for our alumni, who utilize their visit to not only pray with our students, but their friends and former classmates and faculty as well. This provides an enriching experience that we encourage all of our alumni to enjoy at some point, whether it be at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or another Liturgy during the year. Following the conclusion of the celebration, alumni mingled and reconnected with their Molloy family. We would like to thank all alumni that made it out to Molloy for the Liturgy, and hope that we will see you again soon here at the school in 2014!
Over 55 Alumni Volunteer for Stanner Games
Stanner Games happens tomorrow! With the nationally recognized track & field meet all set to take over New York City’s historic Armory just hours from now, the Stanner Alumni Center is excited to report that over 55 volunteers representing alumni, parents, faculty members and friends will be present to help coordinate and officiate the day’s lengthy schedule. According to AJ Power ’84, a track coach here at Molloy as well as one of the main organizers of the event, this is the largest group of alumni and parent volunteers to ever assemble at Stanner Games. The enthusiastic participation of our community is crucial to the success of this monumental meet, which includes dozens of races and events featuring hundreds of the best high school athletes from around the nation. Molloy grads as recently as 2013 and as far back as 1963 come out to support our current athletes at Stanner Games, which is another great example that their education here at Molloy remains “for life.” It’s no small feat, but together with Molloy’s dedicated coaching staff, Stanner Games has been the pinnacle of the high school track & field season for so many schools for 18 years. We expect year 19 to be nothing short of remarkable once again, and we wish all of our athletes well as they prepare to take on some tough competition.
Class Updates
Cdr. John “JC” Coffey ’82 recently expressed kind words to the Stanner Alumni Center after attending the DC Gonzaga Classic with other alumni. “What a great pleasure it was having you down here in DC to watch a Molloy Basketball victory!” Since then, Cdr. Coffey has been busy traveling, including a stop in Jacksonville where he fulfilled several TV appearances speaking about the use of unmanned drones. John is a Vice President at TriVector Services Inc., which describes itself as a “model of sound engineering fundamentals, effectively applied.” Cdr. Coffey previously worked with the US Naval Research Lab/Naval Air Systems Command.
