On behalf of the Marist Brothers, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and the 1,500+ students we serve, THANK YOU to all who have responded to the call to support the many ongoing and annual efforts here at Archbishop Molloy High School. Over 1,600 members of our community generously gave over $1 million to Molloy during our 2015-16 school year.

We are grateful to each person who helped us achieve our goals and helped us meet the wonderful gift challenges we received this year in both the Robert Scandole Scholarship Challenge and this summer’s Stanner Gift Challenge. We are also grateful to everyone who made the effort to join us for another successful Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic, which raised over $150,000 for Molloy scholarships. We are thankful for every donation because we see the day to day impact and transformation they have on our students. From our annual fund – The Fund For Molloy – to our endowed scholarships, you enrich, strengthen, and positively impact the mission, values, and purpose of Molloy that began in 1892.

The Fund For Molloy provides critical resources on an annual basis to:

• Address capital projects around our over 50 year old six acre campus
• Ensure hundreds of students and their families receive critical assistance through our needs assistance efforts

A vibrant scholarship program is the lifeblood of Molloy, generating vital sources of funding for numerous scholarships and programs. In particular, endowed scholarships provide both need-based and merit-based aid that help to shape each incoming class of students. These endowed scholarships ensure hundreds of students can attend Molloy and receive the gift of education in the Marist tradition.

The funds you have generously provided allow Molloy to make smart investments in bright, talented students from a wide array of backgrounds, each one enriching our community in meaningful ways. Many student recipients would not be at Molloy without the financial support that the Fund For Molloy and our endowed scholarships provide.

The moments of transformation these students experience each day—in the lab, on the stage, on the athletic field, or in conversations with treasured faculty mentors — are made possible by you. Baseball Alumni Reunion – 2 WEEKS AWAY!

Just over a week left to register! A reunion for Molloy’s baseball alumni is set for September 24th. All former baseball players and their families are invited to come out to Molloy for a great day featuring a Varsity baseball game (10:00am), a tailgate BBQ (11:30am), and an alumni softball game on Stanner Field (Time TBD). The hat pictured, which pays tribute to Jack Curran, will be available for purchase at this event. Other new clothing items will also be sold. Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run – 3 WEEKS AWAY!

• Mass Start: 8:00am | 5K Race: 9:00am

There just over 2 weeks left to register! All members of the Molloy community are invited to sign up for the Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Fun Run on October 2nd. The 5K race will challenge you on a route through Briarwood, ending with a lap around our track. A One Mile Race and Little One’s Dash are also part of the festivities. Refreshments will welcome all runners and guests upon completion of the races. Top finishers in each age group will be awarded with medals. All runners will receive our 5K t-shirt as well! Come out to Molloy on Thursday, October 6th and enjoy brats and brews with classmates, family and friends. Our annual Molloy Oktoberfest is open to all members of the Stanner community ages 21 and up. It will feature classic Bavarian style food, music, and décor as well as a prize raffle that all attendees will be entered into! Maybe it’s not your official reunion year, but you’re looking for a chance to come back to Molloy. Consider this is a fun, relaxing evening and a great opportunity to enjoy dinner and a few laughs with classmates and friends.

The Stanner Alumni Reunion for class years ending in 1 and 6 is set to take place here at Molloy on Saturday, November 5th. The Reunion is a great opportunity to reconnect with your alma mater, rekindle old friendships, and make new ones with classmates and teachers alike. Class years ending in 1 and 6 will receive a postcard invitation in the mail in the coming days. If you do not receive your invitation, please email alumni@molloyhs.org and provide an updated mailing address.

We are looking for class agents to act as representatives for each class celebrating their reunion! Class agents are volunteers that work with the Stanner Alumni Center to actively spread the word about the reunion in an organized effort to recruit classmates. We are not always able to reach every alumnus with an invitation, but you can help. Molloy Welcomes Classes of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020

Wednesday, September 7th marked the first official gathering of Molloy’s entire Class of 2020, who will be the 17th coed class to graduate from Molloy and among the first generation of students to enjoy an iPad-focused curriculum. After a successful Freshman Camp in July, they are ready to embrace life at Molloy and all it has to offer. The Classes of 2018 and 2019 arrived on September 8th for their orientation – the former representing the first iPad class that will graduate from Molloy and the latter our latest batch of “wise fools”. Today our senior Class of 2017 returned after a restful summer. A year of college applications, Varsity sports, AP classes, and battling that dreaded “senior-itis” awaits them. The Class of 2017 is also the last class that will utilize paper textbooks. Today marked Molloy’s LAST EVER textbook distribution in the Jack Curran Gym! The 2016-17 school year also marks the 200th anniversary of the Marist Brothers Institute. In celebration, Molloy will join Marist schools around the globe by participating in several initiatives that we will publicize in the coming weeks. We encourage our alumni and friends to join in the celebration. If you are unable to attend events, we suggest simply taking time to reflect and remember to live Marist!

Class Updates

John F. Collins ’45 was awarded an honorary degree by Hobart and William Smith Colleges during a commencement ceremony on May 15th, 2016. John was one of five individuals who was honored because their spirit of service “enhances local, national and global communities.” John’s longstanding relationship with the Colleges, including as a staff member, volunteer, and benefactor, was recognized by the President of the Colleges, Mark Gearan (pictured). John grew up in New York City and served on the USS Fremont in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He also served as a member of the NYPD from 1953 to 1976. Congratulations on all of your success, John, and thank you for your service!

Tim Hutchinson ’86 has published a new essay under the name Scott Buettner and available for digital download on Amazon Kindle. September 11th, And The Times After… details the events of September 11th, 2001 in a minute-by-minute account as experienced by Tim, who was on Wall Street that day. The essay also describes the psychological pain that lingered in the months and years that followed. “How did I react? How did I deal with the horror? As the months passed, 9/11 caused me to reassess my life and goals as the fear of being a victim of another attack weighed heavily on my mind,” Tim explains. The essay may be a tough read for some, but hearing from survivor who has also experienced healing may provide a great deal of hope. Learn more: September 11th, And The Times After…

On the Set of Gotham and Beyond

You may have read about Ashley Wellbrock ’04 and her work on the set of the hit TV show “Gotham” in this summer’s Stanner Life magazine. Our article, Alumni: The Arts, featured only some of her comments, and we would like to take this opportunity to share her story in full.

Ever since she was a child, Ashley Wellbrock ’04 was enthralled by movies and the “magical” art form that makes them. She pursued her passion by studying Film & Television Production at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The program nurtured Ashley’s creativity and provided the skills needed to take the next step. “As I began developing my own films, I found myself focusing most of my energy on set dressing – the furniture and detailed accessories that create a character’s environment,” explained Ashley. Art Direction and Interior Design classes at NYU and Parsons led to her finding her niche in set decoration.

Getting a foot in the door in the film industry was challenging. “I took advantage of networking opportunities through NYU and worked on many student and independent projects. With long days and small budgets I was essentially a one-woman department,” said Ashley. Still, she was adept at building sets, prop shopping, and on-set dressing, which led her to an art department assistant job with the HBO production Taking Chance. “It opened many doors for me, especially since this was the same art department that was behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” She also sought unionization, ultimately becoming a “prop” in Local 52 after passing an intense practical and written exam. “It was a defining moment in my career,” said Ashley, who soon began working as a set dresser on a television series. She would work her way up to assistant set decorator.

As a set decorator, Ashley arranges the overall look of a film or television show. “The construction staff and the scenics build and paint sets that fit the tone of the story. We then furnish the environment with furniture, lighting, flooring, window treatments, artwork, and other details,” explained Ashley. “I work with the set decorator to achieve the designer’s vision. We source and shop set pieces that will visually enhance the set and assist in dressing said items into their final positions on set. I pay close attention to my fellow decorators and their creative processes. I’ve learned to always put myself in the character’s frame of mind so I can see how they would interact in the space I’ve created.”

Currently Ashley is working on the Warner Bros. series Gotham. “It has kept me busy. I’m often working long hours and not in a typical office setting, but I like having the ability to work on diverse projects. My job changes drastically day to day, and I thrive on that.” The Gotham crew was recognized with a nomination from and invitation to attend the Art Directors Guild Awards in Los Angeles in January 2016 (pictured left). “It was an amazing experience to be seated in the company of so many talented individuals, including talents who contributed to films like Amadeus and The Sound of Music. It was a wonderful reminder of why I wanted to be in this business and how far I have come in chasing my dreams.”

Ashley doesn’t know what will come next in her career, “but that’s the nature of Hollywood, isn’t it? I am enjoying this roller coaster of a ride and I am looking forward to the unknown. I hope that that includes decorating a musical, or maybe even working with The Muppets.”

We were recently informed of the passing of Antonio Gallego ’08. Antonio passed away suddenly in July. Please keep Antonio, his family and friends in your prayers.

We were recently informed of the passing of James J. Fogarty ’52 on February 26th, 2016. Please keep James, his wife of 57 years, Marian, and their family in your prayers.
