Molloy invites alumni, parents and friends to attend the next installment in its wine tasting series, hosted by in house wine expert Jim Sheehan ’75 and fellow wine guru Mike Garvey ’84. Our community has enjoyed this intimate event since 2012. Those attending will experience a professional wine tasting class in a casual and friendly setting. Seats are still available for this coming Tuesday, but the deadline to register online is Sunday, May 17th, so don’t wait to reserve your seat!

President Karsten Thanks Benefactors, Welcomes Over 50 Students to Special Reception

Part of St. Ann’s/Molloy’s rich history is the role our community plays in the success of our students. For over 120 years, alumni, parents, and friends have supported the educational efforts here at Molloy as volunteers and as philanthropists. Each act of charity goes a long way toward ensuring a student’s Catholic education in the Marist tradition, and some go even further. Many alumni and families have endowed scholarships at Molloy. These scholarships benefit some of the most talented students in New York City, but they also help students enduring extraordinary circumstances that could otherwise inhibit their enrollment at Molloy. Those students are often talented themselves and deserve the right to become a part of our Stanner family. It is thanks to the generosity of our benefactors that that experience becomes possible.

On Thursday, April 16th, President Richard Karsten ’81 invited over 150 individuals to a special reception here at Molloy. Guests included benefactors as well as many of the students benefiting from Molloy’s academic and named scholarship funds. Our benefactors met and talked with many students during the reception, in most cases those currently receiving the scholarship they helped to endow. In expressing his thanks, Mr. Karsten discussed the opportunities made possible by each act of kindness. “The famous comedian Milton Berle once said, ‘If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.’ For generations, Molloy has been that door to opportunity,” said Mr. Karsten. “We are a school that presents our student population with tremendous opportunities. Students have the opportunity to receive a lifetime of learning from a very experienced and nurturing faculty. They have the opportunity to excel academically with our Honors and Advanced Placement programs. They have opportunities for personal growth through programs like Peer Group and SMILE. They get the opportunity to grow spiritually through service programs, Liturgies and retreats, and they have access to an incredible network of universities through our college guidance department. Each student has the opportunity to look inside themselves and create their own unique path to success.”

Also speaking during the evening were a current student and a recent alum who have both benefited from the opportunities Mr. Karsten spoke of. The first presenter was Lillian Mangialino ’15, recipient of the William Barry Memorial Scholarship. “If I had not attended Molloy, what defines me now would be compromised. I would not know Molloy’s Peer Group and retreat programs, which have helped me grow into the emotionally intelligent person I am today. I would also never have known Molloy’s chorus and music programs, which have helped me to find the courage to sing in front of audiences,” said Lillian. “I want to make an impact on the world just as Molloy has made an impact on me.” Lillian then performed a song from Westside Story, Somewhere, to demonstrate the confidence she gained during her Molloy tenure.

The second presenter, Cara Salvatore ’13, enjoyed the Dr. Robert Englert Fellowship, which afforded her a summer internship at the Medicare Rights Center in Manhattan. She has only built on that experience since then. “The Fellowship is a unique opportunity for rising seniors at Molloy to assume a professional role in a major national nonprofit. The experience taught me to earn the respect and trust of my superiors as well as the fulfilling nature of a job well done,” said Cara. “In college, and particularly as a business student, it has become more apparent to me that being ‘the best’ means nothing if no one can vouch for you. Everyone needs a network of people who believe in and support them. To be a Molloy student is to be part of a huge network of successful professionals and former students who want to see you do well. Molloy is not just a building, it’s a family that you will learn from and contribute to for life.”

Lillian and Cara represent just two of the many success stories among Molloy’s 1,500+ students and network of 22,000+ alumni. The common theme is opportunity. Molloy creates opportunities for students to tap into their full potential, and the generosity of our community continues to make those opportunities possible. It’s a wonderful tradition that we hope will continue for generations to come. Thank you to all in our community who give the gift of education. Molloy Honors Three on its Track “Wall of Honor”

On Sunday, May 3rd, Molloy honored three notable individuals by awarding them a place on its illustrious Track & Field Wall of Honor. Brian Farley ’71, Dan McGrath ’01, and Coach Jim Redmond all fit the criteria for induction: athletes or coaches who have made outstanding contributions to Molloy’s Track & Field program or have gone on to achieve greatness in the sport beyond Molloy. The three men attended a special ceremony/reception hosted at the school with their families and friends. Brian, Dan, and Jim graciously accepted their individual honors, but also humbly paid tribute to a Track & Field program that boasts over 40 Intersectional “City” Championships and 24 CHSAA Indoor Track Titles.

The achievements of our honorees are undeniable:

Brian Farley, a Cross Country runner, tied Jim McDermott’s Molloy record of 13:01.8 at Van Cortlandt Park. He set outdoor school records in the 2 Mile Run (9:24.4) and the Steeplechase (9:46.2). This also set the NYS Catholic record and was the 7th fastest time in the nation in 1971. Farley went on to be a member of Providence College’s 3rd Place NCAA Cross Country team in 1974 and holds the Molloy alumni record in the Steeplechase (9:01.8). Dan McGrath won the 1999 CHSAA Cross Country Championship by running 12:46.2 – the second fastest junior time in Stanner history. In Spring 2000, he ran a 9:46.2, winning the Outdoor CHSAA Steeplechase. Though an injury curtailed his senior year at Molloy, Dan went on to set Stanner alumni records at La Salle University in the 5000M (14:28) and 10,000M (30:08). Coach Jim Redmond has volunteered his time and talents to the Molloy and St. Francis Prep Track & Field programs for nearly 20 years. An impeccable motivator, Jim instills excitement and pride in Molloy’s young track stars. Though he presents himself as a gruff, retired police officer, Stanners quickly come to know him as a great mentor with a big heart. Coach Redmond embodies so much about what makes Molloy’s Track & Field program an important part of young people’s lives. His leadership is greatly appreciated, and his induction is long overdue. “It was an absolute privilege to be a part of honoring these three men,” said Alumni Development Director Craig Katinas ’93, who once ran in the very same program. “While their athletic or coaching achievements are commendable, their character and integrity is what truly defines them. They are wonderful additions to the Wall of Honor.” Molloy inducts individuals to its Wall of Honor every two years, while candidates are chosen by our dedicated coaching staff. Over 60 Students Chosen as Leaders for Frosh Camp

Mr. Brian Klimas ’98, one of the main coordinators of Molloy’s annual Freshman Camp, announced that over 60 students have been selected to act as leaders for this summer’s camp. Molloy’s faculty turned in a record number of recommendations – over 1,000 recommendations for 537 different students. “It’s quite a ringing endorsement for our student body,” said Mr. Klimas. Freshman Camp takes place annually each July at the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus and welcomes incoming Molloy freshmen for a week of fun and reflection. The camp gives our newest Stanners an opportunity to make new friends, meet some of their teachers, and get acclimated to the Molloy community before the start of the school year. A group of alums from the Class of 1964 recently got together for one of their frequent luncheons at Trinity Restaurant & Bar in Floral Park. Pictured left to right are John Digirolamo, Mike Honan, Rich Brew, Greg Spano, Barry Mastellone and Gene McParland. The photo was taken by Bill Kelleher. After enjoying their 50th Anniversary Reunion last November, these proud Stanners are excited not only to get together with each other, but to see more classmates annually too. “I try to schedule about four of these a year. All are welcome. We may change venues occasionally, but Trinity is a great Stanner establishment to get together,” said Greg. He encourages any Stanners from’64 who would be interested in getting together for lunch to contact him at netyank52@aol.com.

Maxine Sgouros ’06 (pictured far right) hosted an inaugural fundraiser in early May benefiting Esopus. The event, Esopus Rides: Cycle for Summer, welcomed over 30 guests and raised money for Esopus camp goers who may not be able to afford the cost of the camp themselves. “It is important to support Esopus because everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the wonderful camps hosted there. Everyone has the right to be a part of the Esopus family,” said Maxine. The event took place in a Manhattan cycling studio and featured a 45 minute cycling session. Other Stanners who attended the fundraiser included Jorge Mora ’06, Nicole Savva ’06, Christopher Murphy ’06, and Eleanor Yee ’04. The event raised over $1,300 for Esopus camp goers. George Harmel ’62 is enjoying life splitting time between Nesconset, Long Island and Oviedo, Florida. He is blessed by 14 grandchildren ages three to eighteen, and he calls his Florida residence the “Disney Home” for the grandkids. His law office in Central Islip, Harmel and Associates, has actively served the community since 1981 and continues to do so today. George also looks forward to supporting his daughter, Lara, who is preparing to run for office.

Vincent Clausen ’70 recently shared photos with the Stanner Alumni Center dating back to October 2014. Vincent was delighted to run into a handful of Stanners at a golf outing in Scottsdale, Arizona hosted by Ed Kurpiel ’71 (who was recently featured in The Beehive). The accompanying photos above and below feature members of Molloy’s championship baseball teams from ’69-’71 including Kevin Tennant ’69, Rich Kiselewski ’70, Carl Czurda ‘70. MIke Sparacino ‘70, and Tom Hopke in addition to Vincent and Ed. Also in attendance but not pictured was Ed’s brother-in-law William McGoldrick ’70. In fact there were so many Stanners at the outing that Vincent couldn’t even name them all! Credit goes to Ed Kurpiel for the photos. It’s great to see that our alumni are connecting all over the country and as far as Arizona.

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Kevin L. Rodgers ’69, brother of Richard Rodgers ’65 and brother in law of Vincent Clausen ’70. Please keep Kevin and his family in your prayers.
