    Dear USA Marists,

As we enter these most sacred Holy Days, I pray that each of us is given the grace to journey more deeply with Jesus—from the table of the Last Supper, through His agony in Gethsemane, to His Passion and death on Good Friday—all freely embraced as a gift for our redemption. May we awaken with joy on Easter morning, renewed in the assurance that there is nothing He would not do for us. In these days of the Triduum, may we hear anew His call not only to follow Him—but to live as He lived.

This week, we do not remember a distant story. We stand before the suffering Christ who is still present today—in the cries of young people burdened by anxiety and loneliness, in families torn apart by war and displacement, in those living in poverty and injustice, and in a wounded Earth that continues to groan. We cannot walk with Jesus to Calvary and remain unchanged.

One of the Calls of our recent General Chapter invites us to “promote servant and prophetic leadership.” Jesus shows us what this means—not in words alone, but in action—kneeling to wash the feet of His disciples. This is not a symbolic gesture; it is a way of life. It challenges us to ask: Whose feet are we being called to wash today? Where are we being invited to step beyond comfort, to stand with the vulnerable, and to be a voice of hope and courage in a wounded world?

During these holy days, I invite you to prayerfully place yourself within the Gospel story—alongside Peter in his weakness, Mary in her steadfast love, Simon in his unexpected service, or the faithful disciple who remained to the end. Let this encounter with Jesus move your heart—not only to reflection, but to action. The Resurrection we celebrate is not only a promise for the future; it is a call to bring new life to the world here and now.

With these few words, I hold each of you in prayer that these Holy Days may be quiet, reflective, and grace-filled. We are a Province blessed with many gifts and, at the same time, entrusted with a profound mission. May we move forward with boldness and hope, as true witnesses to the Gospel.

May Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Marcellin guide us as we continue to be Good News for young people, especially those most in need.

    With Gratitude and Prayers,

    --- Br. Dan O'Riordan '85, Provincial

These liturgies brought our community together for an important moment of reflection and prayer as we continue our journey through Holy Week.

Fr. Nicholas Colalella, Molloy’s Chaplain, served as our celebrant for both liturgies. In his homily, Fr. Nick proclaimed that Holy Week is an invitation for all of us to follow Jesus more closely. In addition, our Chorus and Liturgy Committee did a wonderful job in supplementing the Liturgies with an interpretation of Mary praying to Jesus on the cross. Two students assumed the roles of Mary and Jesus on stage while Aine Harkins ’26 and Alexander Lopez ’26 alternated performing in song. In front of a packed Jack Curran Gymnasium, the Class of 2026 took on Molloy's Faculty, who were coming off a big win last year and looking to make it two in a row!

The game was action packed from start to finish, with the seniors leading for the majority of the contest. The faculty took their time to get in a groove, falling behind by double digits in the first half. In the second half, however, they shrunk that 10-point lead to just a single point by the final minutes. The faculty had all the momentum as the seconds ticked away, but the seniors focused on defense in the final minute, ultimately protecting their lead and securing a slim 55-54 victory! At the sound of the final buzzer, the Class of 2026 poured onto the court in celebration, with the faculty offering high-fives out of respect for a great game.

In addition to the game, the evening featured dance performances by Katherine Sit '26, the Dance Team, the Cheer Team, and, of course, the Sassy Seniors at halftime. Molloy's Concert Band also performed throughout the game, with music teacher Mr. Dan Jones alternating between playing in the game and directing the band!

Proceeds from the game supported the Blue Marists in Syria, who provide assistance to thousands of displaced families through the distribution of food, hygiene products, clothes, and shoes. Molloy Appoints Darius Penikas as Next Principal

PRESS RELEASE: Briarwood, NY (July 2015) – Molloy President Richard Karsten has named Darius Penikas as the school’s Principal effective August 1, 2015. He succeeds Br. Thomas Schady, FMS. In April, the new Marist Provincial Br. Patrick McNamara announced the appointment of Br. Thomas Schady as Director of Marist Education working with all of the Marist Schools in the United States.

Most recently Mr. Penikas was the Assistant Principal for Curriculum, Instruction & Student Activities as well as the Summer Principal of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip. Earlier in his career Mr. Penikas was Dean, teacher and coach at St. John’s Preparatory High School and West Hempstead High School.

According to Archbishop Molloy President Richard Karsten, “Mr. Penikas has a proven track record in Catholic education as a teacher, coach and administrator. He will be a great asset to lead our exceptional faculty and to engage our community at large.”

“The search process was designed to include the leadership perspective of the Marist Brothers, School Board Members, Administration, Faculty and Staff,” said Marist Provincial Br. Patrick McNamara. “In the coming months, Marist and school leadership will work in concert to assure a smooth transition.”

In June, Br. Thomas expressed his thanks to Molloy and its community. “Working at Molloy has been a most rewarding experience. The message and mission of the Marist Brothers is alive and well here,” said Br. Thomas. “Molloy has the best students of any school I’ve been associated with. They are generous with their time, spirited, and ambitious. This comes from the guidance and direction of their teachers, coaches, counselors, and my fellow administrators.” Looking ahead, Br. Thomas looks forward to remaining engaged with the Molloy community. “I am looking forward to supporting my Marist administrative team and assisting their vision of new beginnings for the province. I plan to make myself available to Molloy as a resource to help however my expertise is most needed.”

Br. Pat Hogan Fund: Gift Challenge Through 8/31

Br. Pat Hogan stands with Ryan Peeters '07 and Ian Fitts '07In June, Molloy announced the establishment of the Brother Patrick Hogan Fund thanks to the generosity of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen ‘71 and Linda Matteini. Br. Pat, an inspirational teacher, coach, and guidance counselor at Molloy for over 50 years, has dedicated his life to educating young people in mind, body, and spirit. “Being a Marist Brother gives me the opportunity to interact with young people, to motivate them to do extraordinary things in their lives,” said Br. Pat. “It’s a life that I chose and have never regretted. The influence I may have on kids is often returned as they have a profound influence on me too. It’s very rewarding.” (Pictured: Br. Pat Hogan stands with Ryan Peeters ’07 and Ian Fitts ’07)

This summer, Br. Pat Hogan has been busy working up at Esopus, tending to the needs of the disadvantaged individuals at several special camps. Br. Pat deeply appreciates taking part in these kinds of service experiences. “I’ve been working at camps for needy children and young adults at Esopus since 1973. I get more satisfaction out of these experiences than I give, to be honest. Every time I work with the campers, I realize how lucky I am as an individual to be able to go to the camp. I also realize it is an important part of my ministry, but I am personally driven to bring young people to the camps and give them this great experience of service. They might be unsure at first, but after working with the campers they gain great perspective and learn how fortunate they are in their lives.”

The goals of the Brother Patrick Hogan Fund are:

  • Grant a four-year scholarship of $2,000 per year to one student in the incoming Freshman class. As the fund grows, it is our hope to see increased amounts awarded to deserving students. Qualifications for the scholarship include financial need, strong academic standing, and involvement in extracurricular activities.
  • Award a $1,000 grant will be awarded annually to a junior/senior or alumnus/na who has previously participated in service programs to remain connected and involved with future opportunities with the Saint Marcellin Champagnat Society.

Mr. & Mrs. Matteini have also announced a special gift match challenge in support of the Brother Patrick Hogan Fund. Gifts made to the fund through August 31st will be matched dollar for dollar by Mr. & Mrs. Matteini, meaning your gift of $1 becomes $2. Your gift of $25 becomes $50. Your gift of $250 becomes $500. The Matteini family will match up to $100,000! It is a wonderful gesture by the Matteini family and an opportunity to allow this fund to immediately impact a student as early as the 2015-16 school year. You still have time to make a gift to the Br. Patrick Hogan Fund, so don’t wait to do your part to help change lives here at Molloy! Visit www.molloyhs.org/donate or call (718)441-9210 for more information.

Renovation of Student Lockers Part of Several Summer Improvements

A number of capital projects are going on during the summer months at Molloy. There’s always something going on here at Molloy – even during the dog days of summer! This month, student lockers throughout the building are undergoing work to restore and revitalize their look and functionality. Each locker is being improved with a fresh coat of electrostatic paint (inside and out) as well as with refurbished hardware. The third floor lockers in particular will offer a new aesthetic as they have been painted a beautiful light shade of blue. Other lockers around the building will feature a color similar to the previous look, but the new paint is bit brighter with a glossier sheen. In addition to the lockers, several classrooms are seeing improvements with new electrical, acoustic drop ceiling tiles, and energy-efficient LED lights. Later this summer the roof above the Curran gym will be replaced, while the parking lot will receive lighting and paint upgrades, making it a brighter, safer lot. Much of the work around the building this summer has been made possible by the generosity of our students and their families in support of the 2014 Walkathon, as well as our alumni community through their continued charity to The Fund For Molloy. Everyone at Molloy is deeply appreciative of the care you show our school and students every day. Be sure to check The Beehive in September to see the finish products!

Lacrosse Alumni Participate in Fundraiser for Veterans

Coach Alison Scalice (center) poses with Lacrosse alumni.A group of alumni who previously played Varsity lacrosse at Molloy recently participated in Long Island’s “Shootout for Soldiers” event on July 17th. Eight Stanner alumni, including five from the Class of 2015, joined head coach Alison Scalice for the event. They took to the field at Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa at 2:00am (you heard that right) to participate in the challenging 24 hour lacrosse tournament. Proceeds from the event benefited the Wounded Warrior Project and several other Veterans organizations. Scalice was fortunate to play with some of her own former teammates as well. “I got to combine all of my lacrosse worlds, playing at 2am with some of the girls I’ve coached at Molloy and at 4am with the girls I have grown up playing the game with, and all for an amazing cause,” said Scalice. Jack Curran Memorial Camps in Full Swing

Jack Curran Memorial CampEach summer, Molloy’s Jack Curran Memorial basketball and baseball camps offer a great opportunity for young boys and girls to get daily exercise while having fun and making new friends. The instruction these young athletes receive comes from several of Molloy’s hard-working coaches as well as young alumni looking to lend their own experience and advice. “I’m very pleased with the camps so far this summer,” said Athletic Director Mike McCleary, who is the main organizer of the camps. “We’ve already had several hundred kids in the camps to this point, and I expect a nice number of walk-ups when our next baseball camp begins next week.” For more information, visit www.jackcurrancamps.com.

Alumni Updates

Zachary Kurre '15Zachary Kurre ’15 is among seven students from Queens to be accepted into U.S. service academies. He was nominated by Congresswoman Grace Meng. An outstanding student at Molloy, Zach was also a member of the Stanner track & field team for four years. U.S. service academies typically look for candidates who exhibit a mix of strong academics and athletics as well as those who show a propensity for getting involved through extracurricular activities. Zach clearly met all of the desired criteria for selection. For more information you can read about Zach in this recent Times Newsweekly article.
