HISTORY: The first Stanner Track & Field team competed during the 1924-25 year at St. Ann’s Academy. Since then, we have grown across two schools and won an immense number of team titles, gained national acclaim, and most importantly, built relationships that have lasted for life. This dedicated group of men and women – guided by generations of outstanding coaches – has built a family. We look forward to celebrating the legacy of the Stanner Track & Field community.

MORE ABOUT GIVING DAY: Last year we introduced our new Giving Day as October 28th, also known as Montagne Day. The significance of this day in the Marist world extends far beyond the walls of Molloy. Upon visiting a dying boy named Jean-Baptiste Montagne in 1816, Marcellin Champagnat realized Montagne had no education or faith. It was this cataclysmic event that set Marcellin on the path to forming the Marist Brothers. 208 years later, Molloy continues to live out the dream Marcellin Champagnat had, offering a quality Catholic education for the leaders of tomorrow. It is for that reason that we now celebrate Molloy’s Giving Day on Montagne Day.

Molloy Welcomes Nearly 3,000 Visitors to Annual Open House
Our 2024 Open House was a resounding success, as we welcomed close to 3,000 visitors to see firsthand what Molloy is all about! The annual event invited prospective students and their families to tour our campus and meet our faculty, staff, and students, all while learning about Molloy’s outstanding academic, spiritual, extracurricular, and athletic programs.
Visitors were first greeted by our Principal Dr. Darius Penikas, as well as exceptional seniors Jackie, Jake, Camille, and Moises, who all delivered speeches highlighting what Molloy means to them. Next, visitors followed student guides through the building, exploring classrooms and specialized spaces while learning about all the benefits of being a Stanner. The tour ended in the Capt. Anthony Marsloe Gymnasium, where the future Class of 2029 had the opportunity to meet representatives from different clubs and activities, as well as each of our sports teams, hopefully finding a place for themselves well before ever becoming Stanners! In addition to the tour, visitors enjoyed spirited performances by our Chorus, solo vocalists, and school band, as well as exciting demonstrations by our student scientists in our chemistry and biology labs.
Executive Director of Admissions Ms. Heather Green-Wresch said this year’s Open House was a “huge success,” and that it was “so nice to see and speak to the many families that came to visit our school and see what Molloy has to offer.” Director of Admissions Mr. Jonathan DiDonato ‘01 shares that he is “elated by the success of the event,” and that the Admissions Department “appreciated all of those that came down to Stanner High and experienced the warmth within the building given by our faculty, staff, students, coaches, and volunteers.”

Spanish Club Caps Off Hispanic Heritage Month With Homeroom Parade
Molloy’s Spanish Club recently participated in its annual Hallway Parade in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! Students were invited to walk through the halls during homeroom, waving flags and wearing shirts and jerseys representing their cultural backgrounds! The parade was held the same day as a Casual Day, in which all students that participated in the dress-down brought in $5 to be donated to the Marist school community in Venezuela.
The Hallway Parade capped a month of activities and celebrations hosted by the Spanish Club. During Hispanic Heritage Month, the club ran trivia during morning announcements, decorated the first floor bulletin board, and hosted an after school party full of music and food that reflected the beauty of many different cultures. Thank you to Spanish Club and moderator Mr. Little for all their hard work!
Marist General Councilors From Rome Visit Molloy
On Thursday, October 10th, Molloy welcomed two members of the Marist General Council, Br. João Carlos do Prado and Br. Ken McDonald, to learn about how we are living out the Marist mission every day. The Brothers, visiting from Rome, were joined by President Mr. Richard Karsten ‘81, Principal Dr. Darius Penikas, US Provincial Br. Dan O’Riordan ‘85, as well as other members of the Molloy community throughout the day.
During the visit, the Brothers enjoyed a tour of the school by Associate Director of Development Mr. Matt Rizzotti ‘04. Afterwards, the Brothers, along with Br. Dan, President Karsten, and Dr. Penikas sat down with Molloy’s Campus Ministry team to hear about all their new initiatives. Mr. Rich Costa, Director of Campus Ministry & Marist Mission, spoke about the start of Project 153, which represents a new approach to service trips this year, with Ms. Rose Haslbauer explaining in-depth one of those opportunities, as well as the in-house service held at Molloy. Mr. Matt Corrado, explained our retreat program, expanding upon the club and athletic retreats that we hold in-house at Molloy, as well as the weekend retreats at the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus. Br. João and Br. Ken also met with members of the Marists of Champagnat, discussing the ways in which they live out the Marist mission both in and outside of school. Their visit concluded with the praying of the rosary with members of our Catholic Culture Club.
ADULT FORMATION: The Marists of Champagnat is an adult formation program wherein lay Marists further the Marist mission of making Jesus Christ known and loved. During Br. João’s and Br. Ken’s visit to Molloy, faculty and staff that are a part of the Marists of Champagnat spoke to the Brothers about what it means to them to be a part of such a meaningful program. The group discussed what living Marist means to them; Science teacher Mr. Joseph Chowske ‘81 said that the the Marist Brothers did so much for him that he felt moved to give back to the Marist community, Social Studies teacher Ms. Abbey Hipkin said that she had been volunteering for the Marist community for years and so it felt natural to take the next step in becoming a Marist of Champagnat, and Assistant to the President Mrs. Merl Doyle said that she hopes to attend more retreats and seminars to become more involved in the program.

Girls Varsity Tennis Wins 6th Straight B/Q Championship!
Congratulations to our Girls Varsity Tennis team, who recently captured their sixth consecutive Brooklyn/Queens Championship! The B/Q final was a thrilling match, which Molloy won 3-2. Christina K. ’26 won in a second singles tiebreaker, coming back from a 9-6 deficit in a ten point match to win 12-10. Emma P. ’28 won her first single tiebreaker 10-6. In second doubles, Vanessa P. ’26 and Angelina P. ’28 clinched the title with 6-2 and 6-1 wins. The team ultimately advanced to the State Semi-Finals against St. Anthony’s High School earlier this week. Congratulations to the team and Coach Ms. Edward on another wonderful season!
Stanner Athletes of the Week
Congratulations to our most recent Stanner Athletes of the Week! During the week of 10/7, Senior soccer player Olivia T. ’25 scored the only two goals vs. St. Francis Prep to come from behind 0-2 en route to a final 2-2 tie. Another senior soccer player Caleb L. ’25, is being recognized for his outstanding leadership as team captain. He works hard to keep his teammates motivated to play every game hard.
During the week of 10/14, Senior tennis player Kelly M. ’25 stepped up in two singles matches with clutch 6-2 and 6-4 wins against Msgr. McClancy. These performances helped secure a deciding point in Molloy’s overall 4-1 win in the B/Q Semi-Final. Meanwhile, sophomore cross country runner Mike M. ’27 had a strong week finishing 3rd in the B/Q Championships and 8th in the City Championships.

Ed Kull ’99, Former Molloy School Board Member, Named Vice President and Director of Athletics at St. John’s University

Congratulations to former Molloy School Board member Ed Kull ’99, who has accepted the position of Vice President and Director of Athletics at St. John’s University! Ed had been serving as Athletic Director at Fordham University for the past four years. He also served in various leadership positions at SJU earlier in his career, including Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Chief of Staff for the President.
During a press conference, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Oliva stated, “Our Queens native has returned home for some unfinished business at St. John’s. Ed and I worked together for nine years….I know what St. John’s needs right now, and Ed knows what St. John’s needs right now. His proven record of entrepreneurship, revenue generation, and leadership in college athletics are exactly what we set out to find.”
Speaking at the podium, Ed expressed his gratitude to the many people who supported him throughout SJU’s search and hiring process, as well as for his colleagues at Fordham. While reflecting on his path to this new challenge, he gave a special shoutout to his alma mater, Archbishop Molloy High School, including the late Coach Jack Curran, who inspired him a great deal, and the Marist Brothers, who he described as “a key piece of my life and development into who I am today.” Ed said he is excited to get to work and is “all in” on raising the profile of SJU Athletics campus-wide and beyond.
Congratulations again, Ed, and we look forward to seeing all your achievements and success at SJU!
Jim Sheldon ’88 Inducted Into Esopus Hall of Fame

Congratulations to our longtime science teacher and Freshman Camp Director Mr. Jim Sheldon ’88 on his induction into the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus Hall of Fame on October 19th! Mr. Sheldon and fellow honorees Br. John Dunning, Br. John Malich, Br. Damian Novello, Maureen Hagan, Kate O’Loughlin, and Sr. Pat & Sr. Pat’s Camp were inducted for the outstanding impact they have made at Esopus or the Mid-Hudson Valley Camps in service of so many people in the Marist community. Jim’s dedication to Freshman Camp and his impeccable leadership have helped to make camp an experience cherished by countless Stanners over the years. Congratulations again, Mr. Sheldon, and to all this year’s honorees!
Congratulations to the legendary Coach Lou Carnesseca ’43, who was recently honored by St. John’s University ahead of his upcoming 100th birthday! SJU’s “Sunday Supper with Looie” served as an opportunity to kickoff the new Red Storm basketball season, as well as to take a moment to reflect on the legacy and impact of one of New York City’s greatest coaches. Over 24 years, Coach Carnesecca led SJU to 526 victories while qualifying for 18 National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournaments and six National Invitation Tournaments. Under his leadership, the Red Storm enjoyed Final Four appearances in 1985 and 1989.
President Richard Karsten ’81 and Executive Director of Development Craig Katinas ’93 represented Molloy at the event, helping to bridge Coach Carnesecca’s impact at St. Ann’s / Molloy with his storied SJU career. Also in attendance were Ed Kull ’99 (VP and Director of Athletics, SJU) and James Shannon ’83 (Board of Trustees, SJU).

Congratulations to Henry Roubian ’85, who has been promoted from Investigator Sergeant to Investigator Lieutenant. He is now the Commanding Officer of the Sheriff’s Bureau of Investigations Internal Affairs Unit at the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department.
We are saddened to share the passing of Richard W. Jennings, father of Rob Jennings ’89, on October 16, 2024. Rob shared that it is because of his father that he attended Molloy’s Open House and ultimately became a Stanner. “My father became the biggest advocate for me attending Molloy. He talked me into it, and I’m so grateful that he did.” Please join us in prayer for Richard and the Jennings family during this difficult time.
