Storm Recovery Fund
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all of you as the recovery continues in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. We know that so many in our community have been greatly impacted by this storm, and our hearts go out especially to those who have been hardest hit. For many of us on the East Coast, our neighborhoods have been compromised in ways we never thought possible. Despite these challenges before us, there is hope for a return to normalcy.
Archbishop Molloy High School is focusing its efforts in the healing process by doing its part to address the very real and immediate needs of over 1,500 current students and their families. Our top priority is to ensure there is a safe and caring learning environment for all students, especially those whose lives have been altered significantly by Hurricane Sandy. The ripple effects of Sandy will be felt for months, and perhaps years until the last home is rebuilt. In this time of uncertainty, Molloy has established a Storm Recovery Fund that will help currently enrolled students and families who are most affected by the devastation. The goals of the fund are to:
– Offer tuition assistance for those students and their families most impacted by this unprecedented event.
– Provide the appropriate counseling services for Molloy students as they cope with the long-term affects Hurricane Sandy has had on their lives and the lives of their loved ones, many of whom are now emotionally and/ or physically displaced.
– Make available basic school essentials:
- Uniforms
- Workbooks/Textbooks
- School supplies
- Cafeteria Credit
The outpouring of support for our Stanners has already been inspiring. Molloy has been contacted by many within the community who are looking for ways to help – and the calls are coming from across the country. Father John Walls is just one example of this kindness. The Director of Campus Ministry at Marist High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Father Walls is spearheading a collection for the Storm Recovery Fund to assist Molloy students still dealing with the effects of Sandy. Similarly, our friends at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami are also sending donations to fellow Marist schools, including Molloy, throughout the northeast. Others here in New York have offered their homes, their wares and more. Through this adversity, we see the true meaning of the Marist tradition in the way of “Stanners in Action.” Alumni, families and friends are coming to the aid of those in need, and they deserve much thanks.

Molloy Is Open For You This Weekend
We would like to extend an invitation to everyone in our community. This weekend on November 10th and 11th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Molloy will be open for alumni, students, families and friends who are seeking a respite from the cold. We know that many of you are still without electricity, hot water and a warm place to stay – particularly after the more recent snowstorm. Light refreshments, reading materials, Internet access, and access to locker rooms will be available for anyone who wishes to have a brief change of scenery amidst these challenging times. Supervision will be on hand. We look forward to seeing you this weekend. Remember, Molloy is always here for you. If you have any questions please contact the Stanner Alumni Center at (718) 441-9210.
Thanksgiving Liturgy and Walk-A-Thon
This year’s Thanksgiving Liturgy will take place on Wednesday, November 21st at 10:30 am in the Jack Curran Gymnasium. All Stanners and family members are welcome. As we look forward to seeing you, we ask that you consider also taking part in our Walk-A-Thon. In response to Hurricane Sandy, the proceeds from the students’ annual Walk-A-Thon, which is an important fundraising effort for the school, will be reallocated from their original intention to the Storm Recovery Fund in support of Molloy’s students and families that have been most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Walk-A-Thon has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 21st, which is the same day as the Thanksgiving Liturgy. We are inviting alumni to walk with us as one community to help create awareness and raise money for our students and families in need.
Alumni interested in walking should please check in at the Jack Curran Gymnasium by 8:45 am (please use the doors near the track or cafeteria) and then plan to begin walking behind our students at 9:00am. Upon completing the walking route, alumni are then invited to return to Molloy and attend the Thanksgiving Liturgy at 10:30 am, which will give everyone an opportunity to come together as a community to recognize all that we have to be thankful for – a concept with renewed importance for many of us this year. Alumni will also be welcome to visit with available Faculty members during the day. Those who register online will receive a Walk-A-Thon shirt so that we all may walk in solidarity for one cause. In registering, we suggest a donation of $15 to help the cause. Walk-ins will also be accommodated, but shirts will be in limited supply and will be reserved for registered alumni first. If you have any questions, please call (718) 441-9210. We have more to be thankful for this year than any other, and we hope that you will spread the word and join us in an effort to help our Stanners in need.
Let us keep in our prayers all those who perished tragically during Hurricane Sandy, many of whom were members of our families, our friends and our neighbors. As communities look to aid one another in picking up the pieces, let us pray that God and the spirits of the deceased will stay with us and guide us during these challenging times.
We are saddened to share news of the passing of Thomas Kirwin ’65. Thomas, a resident of Lloyd Harbor, New York, held Molloy at the center of his life. In particular, Tom held dear his time playing for Coach Curran as part of Molloy’s All City Championship teams in the 1960s. Thomas is survived by his wife Barbara of 41 years (whom he met at a Molloy dance many years ago), and his son Damon. Memorial services for Thomas will be held at St. Patrick’s Church (400 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743) on Tuesday, November 13th at 9:45 am. Please pray for the Kirwin family.
