Dear Brothers and All USA Marists,

Continued Advent blessings to each of you. It is hard to believe that next week is Christmas. I pray that, in the midst of these hectic days of last-minute shopping, the final days of school before the break, and all the other tasks filling our to-do lists, we might somehow find a quiet moment amid the chaos to open our hearts to the Miracle that awaits us next Thursday.

As we embrace this third week of Advent, may the pink Candle of Joy not only shine brightly in our Advent wreaths, but also be reflected in the joyful witness of our lives and actions during these sacred days. Despite the many painful challenges and realities present in our world and in our own country, let us continue to strive to be true Marist Pilgrims of Hope. May we take to heart the inspiring words of Meister Eckhart: “What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the Son of God (many) years ago if I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my own time and in my own culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.” Each morning during this month of December, I have been using two key resources for my prayer: the daily reflections from our fellow USA Marists in our Province Advent Prayer book, and, Give Us This Day. I am deeply grateful to all our USA Marists who shared such thoughtful and powerful meditations, as well as to Kelly Latimore, the artist whose painting is featured on the back cover of this month’s Give Us This Day. Kelly’s depiction of the Holy Family of the Streets has been a central focus of my prayer. It reminds me daily that Mary and Joseph not only found no room or welcome at the inn, but that shortly after the birth of Jesus they fled to Egypt as refugees to protect their child from Herod’s massacre of the innocent. So many modern-day “Holy Families” live with similar fear, sustained only by the hope of providing a better life for their children. May God grant a peaceful and safe path forward for all such families throughout our world.

On behalf of our USA Province, I wish each of you a most blessed and grace-filled Christmas. May it be filled with family, friends, love, peace, joy, and hope. As we soon celebrate the gift of Emmanuel, may we do so by ensuring that each of us—like Mary—allows Christ to come into our world once again through the actions and witness of our lives.

    With gratitude,

Br. Dan O'Riordan '85, US Provincial

This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our Stanners have been busy traveling, engaging in service, and continuing to learn about and live out their faith. In November, Liz Canty ’26, Cameron Picarello ’26, Connor Picarello ’26, Kirstine Perez ’26, Matt Binay ’26, Emmerson Villaman ’26, Chelsea Joseph ’27, and Kaya Bednarczuk ’28 traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, with Dr. Prince, Ms. Kussman, and Mr. Costa to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference.

The three-day gathering brought together over 18,000 young Catholics from across the country for inspiring talks, workshops, liturgies, and activities. In a lively atmosphere, our students connected with peers who shared their faith, exchanging hats, clothespins with Scripture quotes, and meaningful conversations. A highlight of the conference was a livestreamed Q&A with Pope Leo, followed by a powerful closing message from Youth Minister Steve Agrisano: “Don’t worry about leaving and going back to ‘real life.’ This is real life.”

Weeks later, students traveled to Belize. Vanessa Guilfoyle ’26, Alex Gonzalez ’26, Oona Woods ’27, Lucas Lui ’27, Hannah Abenante ’27, Lilly Kacziba ’27, Emily Mussalli ’28, and Ovi Oke ’28 traveled with Marist Director of Integral Ecology and Sustainability Sam King, Dr. Alice Prince, Ms. Jennifer Federico, and Mr. Richard Costa for a week of service and learning focused on climate change and global sustainability.

During the week, our students joined peers from local schools for beach cleanups, where meaningful connections formed between the Stanners and Caribbean Belizean youth. Students also visited an inland school serving Mayan children, where they taught various subjects, played games, and helped prepare for the school’s Christmas pageant. Stanners also toured a cacao plantation, gaining insight into sustainable farming and daily life in Belize. Through these encounters, students reflected on faith, gratitude, and the difference between material wealth and spiritual richness.

These trips are part of Campus Ministry’s Project 153, which invites students to grow through experiencing the world around them. More trips will be available later this school year!

The Michael J. Cawley Memorial Foundation invites the Molloy community to its 23rd Annual Benefit in memory of the late Firefighter Michael J. Cawley ’87. Proceeds from this event support Molloy students through the gift of scholarship.

At Molloy, Michael was an active student, participating in retreats at Esopus, volunteering at summer special camps, and serving as a retreat leader. His dedication to service and retreats earned him a St. Marcellin Champagnat Service Award at graduation. After college, Michael remained drawn to the ideals of service and leadership, leading him to pursue a career with the FDNY. He primarily worked with Ladder Company 136 in Queens with time also served in Engine Companies 35 and 286.

On September 11, 2001, Michael bravely joined his FDNY brethren, boarding a Rescue 4 fire truck bound for lower Manhattan in response to the terror attack – this despite being relieved of duty earlier that morning. Michael unfortunately did not survive the events of that day. He is remembered for his kindness, selflessness, and friendship. Michael is forever honored in Molloy’s Stanner Hall of Fame.

Molloy and the Michael J. Cawley Memorial Foundation carry on Michael’s legacy through an annual Named Scholarship, The Firefighter Michael J. Cawley Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship has helped many deserving students to attend Molloy, affording them the opportunity to enjoy the enriching environment and service and retreat programs that Michael once loved. You can help continue to strengthen this legacy by attending the foundation’s annual benefit on April 5th. Visit https://www.ffmichaeljcawley.org/ to learn more.

Molloy Celebrates Beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Prayer Service

On March 5th, Molloy celebrated Ash Wednesday by holding a prayer service for all students, faculty, and staff. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, which is the 40-day preparatory period before Easter.

Ash Wednesday acts as a reminder of our need for reconciliation with God. The season of Lent is a time for connecting with God and growing closer to Him. In a message to the US Province, Provincial Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85 shared, “Ash Wednesday is the beginning of a time allowing each of us to embrace the Gospel and not only mark our foreheads with ashes in the sign of the cross, but also to be true witnesses to others and recognizing how we are all called to be a modern Simon in helping others to carry their crosses.”

Happy Pi Day From Our Math Department!

Happy Pi Day π! March 14th is an annual celebration of Pi, a limitless mathematical constant beginning with the digits 3.14 that measures the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. As an exercise to illustrate the infinite nature of Pi, students in Ms. Pizzo’s, Ms. Jones’s, and Ms. Keyes’s math classes graphed and decorated a total of 486 digits of Pi! The digits have since been hung along the third floor hallway, extending from one end of the building to the other!

It was a full team effort by the Math Department, beginning with the students first plotting coordinate points and designing the digits. Ms. Jones then ordered each of the 486 digits that were created, followed by Ms. Pizzo decorating the hallway. “We are so happy with how this project turned out,” said Ms. Pizzo, who serves as Molloy’s Math Department Chairperson. “The project was fun and gives the students some tangible idea about the concept of an irrational number – non-terminating and non-repeating.”

Molloy Hosts Welcome Event for Incoming Freshmen

On March 8th, over 400 families from the incoming 9th Grade class visited Molloy for the Freshman Welcome Event! Students from the Class of 2029 and their families had the chance to visit an array of tables representing different departments, including Academics, Admissions, Freshman Camp, Finance, Athletics, and more! Additionally, the incoming freshmen took their ID pictures, had the chance to purchase apparel, and enjoyed some delicious snacks! Welcome, Class of 2029, to the Molloy family! STEAM Club Visits Intrepid Museum

On March 10th, 13 members of Molloy’s STEAM Club took a field trip to the Intrepid Museum! The group had the opportunity to explore the Hangar and Flight Decks of the USS Intrepid, a World War II-era aircraft carrier that has since been decommissioned and repurposed as a museum dedicated to honoring various sea, air, and space innovations and accomplishments.

Club moderator and Physics teacher Mr. Chris Autera ‘16 shared, “We saw eyewitness artifacts from Armed Forces members who served in WWII and the Vietnam War. In a ‘hands-on’ exhibit, students were able to explore models of various aircrafts, sit in pilot’s areas, and see what life was like for the service people on board.”

On the Flight Deck, students took a close look at many different types of aircrafts used throughout the 20th century, as well as some views of Manhattan and New Jersey. In an indoor exhibit, they walked underneath and around the Space Shuttle Enterprise, a first-of-its-kind prototype from the 1970s, which paved the way for the orbital flights of later shuttles.

Mr. Autera exclaimed, “This engaging trip brought in all five key components of ‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and the students enjoyed our time at the Intrepid!”

Athletic Teams, Clubs Enjoy After School Retreats

Teams and clubs at Molloy have the opportunity to participate in group retreats after school, run by our wonderful Campus Ministers. On February 25th, the boys varsity lacrosse team took part in their first ever athletic team retreat. The theme of the retreat was “Unity” and how our Marist pillars can support us as members of a family/team. The afternoon was filled with prayer, team building experiences, and reflections on the importance of fostering unity on and off the lacrosse field.

On February 27th, the boys varsity baseball team took part in their first ever athletic team retreat. The theme for this retreat was “Family and Being Selfless,” and the team spent time in prayer, participated in team building challenges, and reflected on how they can collectively create a team culture where the focus is not necessarily on the individual, but rather on the team and the idea of family. Team members walked away with a better understanding of what it means to be a team, as well as how the Marist pillars can support them in their endeavors as student athletes.

On March 3rd, members of the Molloy Baking Club gathered to take part in a retreat with the theme “Gathered Around the Table: Social Comfort in an Environment of Warmth, Food and Caring.” Guest speaker and AMHS Board Member, Mrs. Nan Doherty, joined participants and shared about her love of baking, how she embraces Marist hospitality, and how she brings God’s love to her community through the gift of baking. Stanners were inspired by the connections between their love of baking and our shared Marist values.

He reflected on Christ’s birth in a humble stable rather than in comfort, reminding us that Jesus is never afraid to enter into the chaos of human existence.

On behalf of Molloy’s Liturgy Committee, we hope everyone has a fun and restful break!
