Molloy Connects Benefactors with Scholarship Recipients
On Wednesday, March 6th, Molloy held its annual Benefactor Celebration, in gratitude for the generosity of our wonderful benefactors. The event gives our benefactors the opportunity to speak to current Stanners who benefit from their philanthropy, seeing how their donations impact their lives and support the many enriching programs at Molloy.
Molloy’s President Mr. Richard Karsten ’81 began the night by thanking everyone in attendance, especially the benefactors who “put their trust in us with their unwavering support of the students at Molloy.” President Karsten shared that their generosity has helped to grow Molloy’s Named Scholarship program to over 80 funds, transforming the lives of so many students. The evening’s program continued with a celebratory dinner, as well as presentations from three unique facets of school life at Molloy: Campus Ministry, the Stanner Players (Theater), and the Murphy Scholars (Experiential Summer Program). Benefactors spoke with the student presenters, asked questions, and learned first-hand the amazing opportunities available to students within the halls of Stanner High.
A highlight of the night was the speech given by Caroline Rozmus ‘24, a star Stanner who directly benefits from the generosity of our benefactors. Caroline shared with all in attendance her appointment to the United States Naval Academy and her decision to attend. “Molloy has been such an amazing place for me,” shared Caroline, “It is a place where I discovered my passions and my potential and has helped me create the person I am today.” Caroline praised Molloy for setting her up for success by introducing her to a love of selfless service. Caroline, as well as all of the student volunteers present at the celebration, are all examples of what benevolence and philanthropism can accomplish.
In the words of President Karsten, “The evening was a celebration of support and a great example of what I call ‘Molloy-alty!’” Thank you to our benefactors, student volunteers, the Stanner Alumni Center, and everyone who helped make this wonderful night possible!
Molloy Celebrates the Lenten Season
The season of Lent calls for us to reflect on and evaluate our relationship with God, others, and ourselves. The 40 days are usually marked with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, with many people celebrating in their own personal ways. However, three proactive Stanners – Kristen Mussalli ‘25, Alyssa Bisono ‘25, and Christina Sbano ‘25 – came up with a way to incorporate Lent into the everyday fabric of Stanner life in a fun and interactive way!
The three Stanners approached Ms. Rose Haslbauer, Molloy’s Campus Minister for Service, with the idea of “Lenten Challenges,” a five-part series of week-long challenges that are “made to connect students with each other, make new friends, get to know the faculty, and spark their creativity.” Each challenge concludes with a reflection relating to Lent, sent out to the entire student body, faculty, and staff.
The first Lenten Challenge was titled “Simply Finding Nemo,” which reminded students to see God even if he feels hidden from us. The second challenge, “Digital Bingo,” allowed students to see how all of their backgrounds, stories, and Molloy experiences bring them together. “What Do You Meme: Stanner Edition” during week three encouraged students to look at life from different perspectives. Week four’s challenge is still underway, getting students to better know the faculty around the school. Week five is still a mystery, but at the end of Lent, prizes will be given to the top three students with the most points!
Ms. Haslbauer shares, “A lot of the time we think of Lent as a period to reflect on suffering and sacrifice, but it can be a time of joyful reflection as well.” We thank her and the incredible Stanners who are always looking for innovative ways to incorporate our faith into fun activities that all students can participate in together!
Model UN Attends Prep MUNC Conference
Earlier this year, fourteen members of Molloy’s Model UN attended the Prep MUNC Conference with moderator Ms. Abbey Hipkin. Despite fierce competition from at least five other local schools, Madeline Accardo ’24 and Valerie Savage ’24 were awarded Second Honorable Mention in their committees, while Moises Bien Nunag ’25 and Avinash Harpaul ’26 were awarded First Honorable Mention! Congrats to all Stanner delegates on a job well done as they prepare to attend two more conferences in Manhattan during the coming months to close out the 2024 Model UN season!
The Coding School Interviews Stellar CS&E Stanners!
Earlier in March, Mr. Trent Peltz from The Coding School (TCS) visited Molloy to interview Principal Dr. Darius Penikas and four incredible Stanners: Ashlyne Costin ‘25, Shlok Dharia ‘24, Gisele Habibulla ‘25, and Gurpreet Heir ‘25! Molloy is one of six schools across the country (and the only one from New York!) to be interviewed by TCS, as we have been selected as one of their exemplary partner schools.
Computer Science & Engineering Chairperson Ms. Edit Boral shares, “Molloy has been a partner school with TCS for the last four years. The school offers a range of programs focusing on skill-building and workforce development in cutting-edge technologies such as Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data. Through this collaboration, students at Molloy benefit from access to innovative educational opportunities designed to prepare them for success in the evolving digital landscape.”
During the visit, Stanners were questioned about their experience in the TCS partner course, being prompted to share what their favorite topics were, why they think the course is important, or what being an AI leader means to them. Keep an eye out for TCS’s full interview in the upcoming weeks, and read our full article about the visit at www.molloyhs.org/news/
In other CS&E news, teachers Ms. Edit Boral and Mr. Alex van Winkel (pictured above) recently had the privilege of attending a Generative AI professional development session at Google. This invaluable opportunity allowed them to delve into the latest advancements and techniques in Generative Artificial Intelligence, gaining insights that will enrich our curriculum and benefit our students’ learning experiences. We commend their dedication to staying abreast of emerging technologies and their commitment to providing high-quality education at Molloy.

Br. Eugene Birmingham Enjoys Counselors Tour in Scotland
Guidance Counselor Br. Eugene Birmingham embarked on an exciting tour of Scotland from February 25 to March 1, 2024, during which he visited the University of Glasgow, University of Stirling, and the University of Aberdeen. Before the tour began, Br. Eugene stayed with the Marist Brothers in Glasgow.
The aim of the Scotland Counselor Tour is to provide counselors with an in-depth understanding of the Scottish higher education system, as well as the key benefits on offer in Scotland for US students. Through presentations and meetings with key university staff and students, participants experienced firsthand what campus life is like in Scotland. Seminars covered topics including Student Support and Scottish Enlightenment, and the National Centers for Sports Training also presented. The three universities included on the tour each offer distinct options for students, ranging from the ancient to the modern, large to small class size, and big city to smaller campus-style experience.
Br. Eugene enjoyed the overall experience and came back with valuable new perspectives on different student experiences. He hopes this new knowledge will guide him in his continued work counseling Molloy students.
