This school year, Molloy installed a saltwater aqu This school year, Molloy installed a saltwater aquarium in the Biology Lab, creating an exciting new hands-on learning opportunity for our students! Funded by donations from the 2024 Stanner-a-Thon, the aquarium began as an idea from biology teacher Mr. John Attard ’06. As a longtime saltwater aquarium owner, Mr. Attard saw the educational value of bringing a reef tank into the classroom, especially at a school that offers Biology, Marine Biology, and a thriving Biology Club.

The 100-gallon tank welcomed its first resident, a clownfish named Ack, in honor of late beloved Marist Brother and biology teacher Br. Aquinas Richard ‘48. Since then, the aquarium has continued to grow and now houses three fish, as well as coral, sea snails, hermit crabs, and other marine invertebrates. “We’re one of the very few schools west of Long Island to have a saltwater reef tank,” Mr. Attard shared. “We plan to continue adding fish and expanding the environment within the tank.”

Along with Mr. Attard, members of Molloy’s Biology Club are responsible for maintaining the aquarium. Every two weeks, students conduct water tests to monitor conditions and support a thriving environment. “It’s a little piece of the ocean in the Bio Lab,” Mr. Attard said. “I think it’s a great way for students to develop an appreciation for how delicate life can be.” With proper care, some of the fish in the tank can live for up to 30 years!

Although the aquarium is still in its early stages, Mr. Attard reiterated that there are plans to add more fish and marine life over time. In the future, it could be incorporated into Molloy’s Biology, Marine Biology, and advanced science classes. This exciting addition is already enhancing life in the Biology Lab, and we can’t wait to see how it continues to grow!

Earlier this month, Anna Kril, President and Found Earlier this month, Anna Kril, President and Founder of the breast cancer foundation SHAREing & CAREing, visited Molloy to speak with members of the Knitting & Crafts Club. During her presentation, she shared how the care baskets her foundation distributes to women undergoing breast cancer treatment during the holiday season each included a pipe cleaner flower made and donated by club members in October.

Anna recounted several moving stories that illustrated the impact of this small gesture, including the story of a young mother who, after receiving her flower, brought it with her to every treatment because it provided hope during a difficult time.

During her visit, Anna also presented Knitting & Crafts Club President Carrie Li ’26 and Vice President Kaylani Ramirez ’26 with certificates of appreciation, acknowledging how a simple act of kindness from Molloy students has touched countless lives in meaningful and lasting ways.

Ms. Dorothy DeNoto, moderator of the club, is in “awe of the amount of students, both boys and girls, who come to make crafts when they know it’s for service.” She is excited to continue the relationship with SHAREing & CAREing, and looks forward to seeing what the future holds for service opportunities that revolve around “caring in the Marist way!”

This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our Stanners have been busy traveling, engaging in service, and continuing to learn about and live out their faith. In November, Liz Canty ’26, Cameron Picarello ’26, Connor Picarello ’26, Kirstine Perez ’26, Matt Binay ’26, Emmerson Villaman ’26, Chelsea Joseph ’27, and Kaya Bednarczuk ’28 traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, with Dr. Prince, Ms. Kussman, and Mr. Costa to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference.

The three-day gathering brought together over 18,000 young Catholics from across the country for inspiring talks, workshops, liturgies, and activities. In a lively atmosphere, our students connected with peers who shared their faith, exchanging hats, clothespins with Scripture quotes, and meaningful conversations. A highlight of the conference was a livestreamed Q&A with Pope Leo, followed by a powerful closing message from Youth Minister Steve Agrisano: “Don’t worry about leaving and going back to ‘real life.’ This is real life.”

Weeks later, students traveled to Belize. Vanessa Guilfoyle ’26, Alex Gonzalez ’26, Oona Woods ’27, Lucas Lui ’27, Hannah Abenante ’27, Lilly Kacziba ’27, Emily Mussalli ’28, and Ovi Oke ’28 traveled with Marist Director of Integral Ecology and Sustainability Sam King, Dr. Alice Prince, Ms. Jennifer Federico, and Mr. Richard Costa for a week of service and learning focused on climate change and global sustainability.

During the week, our students joined peers from local schools for beach cleanups, where meaningful connections formed between the Stanners and Caribbean Belizean youth. Students also visited an inland school serving Mayan children, where they taught various subjects, played games, and helped prepare for the school’s Christmas pageant. Stanners also toured a cacao plantation, gaining insight into sustainable farming and daily life in Belize. Through these encounters, students reflected on faith, gratitude, and the difference between material wealth and spiritual richness.

These trips are part of Campus Ministry’s Project 153, which invites students to grow through experiencing the world around them. More trips will be available later this school year!

Thank you to Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. ’82, who spent the day at Molloy on December 10th serving as a guest speaker in several social studies classes. Sen. Addabbo shared that, prior to ever running for office, he started out simply by using his voice to try and help better his community. He encouraged students to use their voices to reach out to their local representatives. Sen. Addabbo also discussed his career in politics and the importance of hearing the needs of constituents, especially those of younger generations, whether they are of legal age to vote or not. Sen. Addabbo also took questions and engaged in a few spirited debates with Molloy’s Seniors. Thank you once again to Sen. Addabbo for visiting Molloy, and thank you to Ms. Diana Rayappa ’04 for coordinating Sen. Addabbo’s visit.

During her presentation to Molloy’s softball players and coaches, Victoria discussed the definition of a concussion, vulnerable populations, signs and symptoms, diagnostics, and treatments. Victoria also shared that she chose to pursue the physician assistant program because it allows for more flexibility in the medical field, although she would like to start her career in surgery. She will soon begin her medical rotations through the university.

Special thanks to Catie Massowd for providing information for this story. Pictured left to right: Lou Santos, Maureen Rosenbaum, Victoria, Catie Massowd ’07, and Julianne Keyes ’09.

In December, Billy Rabold ’13 and Derek Southerland ’13 made an appearance in The Tablet newspaper in a photo with Bishop Robert Brennan, the new Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Bishop Brennan was visiting his alma mater, St. John’s University, where he graduated in 1984. After celebrating Mass on campus, Bishop Brennan attended the men’s basketball game versus Fordham, where he would took photos with Billy, Derek, and other alumni.
