This school year, Molloy installed a saltwater aqu This school year, Molloy installed a saltwater aquarium in the Biology Lab, creating an exciting new hands-on learning opportunity for our students! Funded by donations from the 2024 Stanner-a-Thon, the aquarium began as an idea from biology teacher Mr. John Attard ’06. As a longtime saltwater aquarium owner, Mr. Attard saw the educational value of bringing a reef tank into the classroom, especially at a school that offers Biology, Marine Biology, and a thriving Biology Club.

The 100-gallon tank welcomed its first resident, a clownfish named Ack, in honor of late beloved Marist Brother and biology teacher Br. Aquinas Richard ‘48. Since then, the aquarium has continued to grow and now houses three fish, as well as coral, sea snails, hermit crabs, and other marine invertebrates. “We’re one of the very few schools west of Long Island to have a saltwater reef tank,” Mr. Attard shared. “We plan to continue adding fish and expanding the environment within the tank.”

Along with Mr. Attard, members of Molloy’s Biology Club are responsible for maintaining the aquarium. Every two weeks, students conduct water tests to monitor conditions and support a thriving environment. “It’s a little piece of the ocean in the Bio Lab,” Mr. Attard said. “I think it’s a great way for students to develop an appreciation for how delicate life can be.” With proper care, some of the fish in the tank can live for up to 30 years!

Although the aquarium is still in its early stages, Mr. Attard reiterated that there are plans to add more fish and marine life over time. In the future, it could be incorporated into Molloy’s Biology, Marine Biology, and advanced science classes. This exciting addition is already enhancing life in the Biology Lab, and we can’t wait to see how it continues to grow!

Earlier this month, Anna Kril, President and Found Earlier this month, Anna Kril, President and Founder of the breast cancer foundation SHAREing & CAREing, visited Molloy to speak with members of the Knitting & Crafts Club. During her presentation, she shared how the care baskets her foundation distributes to women undergoing breast cancer treatment during the holiday season each included a pipe cleaner flower made and donated by club members in October.

Anna recounted several moving stories that illustrated the impact of this small gesture, including the story of a young mother who, after receiving her flower, brought it with her to every treatment because it provided hope during a difficult time.

During her visit, Anna also presented Knitting & Crafts Club President Carrie Li ’26 and Vice President Kaylani Ramirez ’26 with certificates of appreciation, acknowledging how a simple act of kindness from Molloy students has touched countless lives in meaningful and lasting ways.

Ms. Dorothy DeNoto, moderator of the club, is in “awe of the amount of students, both boys and girls, who come to make crafts when they know it’s for service.” She is excited to continue the relationship with SHAREing & CAREing, and looks forward to seeing what the future holds for service opportunities that revolve around “caring in the Marist way!”

This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our This fall, Molloy’s Campus Ministry team and our Stanners have been busy traveling, engaging in service, and continuing to learn about and live out their faith. In November, Liz Canty ’26, Cameron Picarello ’26, Connor Picarello ’26, Kirstine Perez ’26, Matt Binay ’26, Emmerson Villaman ’26, Chelsea Joseph ’27, and Kaya Bednarczuk ’28 traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, with Dr. Prince, Ms. Kussman, and Mr. Costa to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference.

The three-day gathering brought together over 18,000 young Catholics from across the country for inspiring talks, workshops, liturgies, and activities. In a lively atmosphere, our students connected with peers who shared their faith, exchanging hats, clothespins with Scripture quotes, and meaningful conversations. A highlight of the conference was a livestreamed Q&A with Pope Leo, followed by a powerful closing message from Youth Minister Steve Agrisano: “Don’t worry about leaving and going back to ‘real life.’ This is real life.”

Weeks later, students traveled to Belize. Vanessa Guilfoyle ’26, Alex Gonzalez ’26, Oona Woods ’27, Lucas Lui ’27, Hannah Abenante ’27, Lilly Kacziba ’27, Emily Mussalli ’28, and Ovi Oke ’28 traveled with Marist Director of Integral Ecology and Sustainability Sam King, Dr. Alice Prince, Ms. Jennifer Federico, and Mr. Richard Costa for a week of service and learning focused on climate change and global sustainability.

During the week, our students joined peers from local schools for beach cleanups, where meaningful connections formed between the Stanners and Caribbean Belizean youth. Students also visited an inland school serving Mayan children, where they taught various subjects, played games, and helped prepare for the school’s Christmas pageant. Stanners also toured a cacao plantation, gaining insight into sustainable farming and daily life in Belize. Through these encounters, students reflected on faith, gratitude, and the difference between material wealth and spiritual richness.

These trips are part of Campus Ministry’s Project 153, which invites students to grow through experiencing the world around them. More trips will be available later this school year!

This new issue is a special edition highlighting the four goals of Molloy’s Strategic Plan. We are excited to share the many initiatives of the plan we have achieved as well as our ongoing progress in many areas. Additional articles will highlight aspects of the Strategic Plan in greater detail.

Molloy Receives Middle States Accreditation

Molloy proudly shares that it has received accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools!

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) is “a non-governmental, nonprofit, peer-administered organization of diverse educational institutions committed to ensuring that students in accredited schools are receiving the highest quality education.” A third-party entity, the MSA sent “objective, non-judgmental” fellow educators to observe Molloy and discuss various objectives and key concepts that will guarantee a top-tier education to all students.

Dr. Jonathan Mangar ’09, World Language teacher, acted as the internal coordinator for the re-accreditation process, and worked with the school community to gather data about Molloy’s academics, technology, Marist Mission, and many other aspects of the school. He shared, “I facilitated the team’s visit, and they were altogether pleased with us and our outstanding school!”

According to Principal Dr. Penikas, “It is important to get an impartial, professional, well-known and well-respected third-party to periodically evaluate Molloy to ensure that we are taking active and intentional steps to live our mission and be the best school we can be.” During the process, members of the MSA evaluated Molloy’s facilities, financial resources, technology, and other qualities of student and faculty life, as well as instructional methods, curriculum, and support services. Molloy met all MSA standards, marking it as an “Accredited Institution,” and then created action plans with the MSA team to continue serving our community to the best of our ability.

News From Campus Ministry

President Karsten ’81, Ms. Wilson, Mr. Corrado, and Mr. Dougherty ’91 join students prior to a screening of The Letter.
Marist Youth Encounter.

Earlier this month, students from Molloy joined five other Marist schools at the Marist Brothers’ Center at Esopus for a Marist Youth Encounter. The weekend served to strengthen students’ Marist faith and encouraged self-reflection and team-building.

On January 12th, Campus Ministry and I AM Green hosted a viewing of the film “The Letter.” Students were invited after school to view Pope Francis’s documentary about environmental awareness, which was a “call to action for climate change.” The Marist US Vice Provincial, Br. Owen Ormsby ‘74, also attended the viewing. Moderator of I AM Green Mr. Dougherty ’91 said of the documentary, “It was incredibly moving and powerful… funny at times. Bringing together four people from such different backgrounds with their common goals that were totally in line with the Pope’s historic call to action was both heartwarming and incredibly effective. Also, I was very impressed with the amount of kids that came and their responses in our discussion!”

Tyler Tabarovsky ‘23 had a fantastic time at the NYC Quantum Computing meetup. He was grateful for meeting the founder of The Coding School, Kiera Peltz, and one of the world’s top innovators and physicists, Dr. Zlatko Minev. He shared, “I liked that Dr. Minev talked about how he and his team were working on encryption in quantum computing and how quantum computers are going to affect cybersecurity and the way we live.”

Kaelem Bent ‘23 shared, “The visit to IBM was a good way to connect with other New York City students and meet our lab instructors in person. I’m glad we had a chance to discuss the future of computer science and all the challenges quantum computers will bring.”

“It was inspiring to talk to PhD students and scientists who are in the position you want to be in,” added Nico Dolengewicz ’23. “They reinforced my decision to study computer science and cybersecurity. I gained so much knowledge from this visit to IBM and am grateful for the opportunity.”

Introducing: Sports Management Club

Molloy is always looking to add new clubs and activities so all students can find something they’re passionate about. Several new clubs have been introduced in the 2022-23 school year, including the instant hit Sports Management Club! Moderated by Ms. Stephanie Staiano, the club allows for student involvement in documenting and sharing athletic information to the public.

According to Ms. Staiano, “The club was created for students who are interested in sports and want to get involved in the athletics program here at Molloy. Some of our members are on teams, and some are students who are interested in helping to manage the teams. The club members do sports photography, create sports media posts for social media, create graphic designs for sports content, keep statistics, report scores, broadcast games, assist staff on media days, and help with athletic events.”

Each individual sports team will have its own representatives from the club that will make sure all information is received and shared. Representatives include a reporter, graphic designers, statisticians, and broadcasters.

Co-president of the club Samantha LaTempa ‘23 shares, “This club builds support for the athletics program at Molloy and creates exposure for all of the amazing athletes we have. I love how anyone can be involved in this club and how you don’t have to be on a sports team to participate.” Co-president Anthony Romano ‘23 says he “enjoys working together with students from all grades to represent our athletes here at Molloy.”

Read our upcoming Beehives for more information about two other new clubs: Pre-Med Career Club and The Music Club!
