    Dear USA Marists,

Blessings as we recently celebrated the Marian feast day, Mary’s “Yes” to the Angel Gabriel and her openness to allow Jesus to enter our world through her.

As Marists, we are invited to live that same spirit each day: to be the Marian face of the Church, quietly and faithfully bringing Christ into the lives of those we encounter. In a world that so often feels burdened and uncertain, our simple presence, compassion, and faith can become a living “fiat,” allowing God to work through us in ways both seen and unseen.

As we are about to begin Holy Week, we are reminded that Mary walked with Jesus not only in moments of joy, but also through suffering, uncertainty, and loss. She remained close to her Son, trusting even when the path was difficult to understand. Today, so many of our brothers and sisters—especially young people—carry heavy crosses shaped by war, poverty, human trafficking, and other deep injustices. We are called to walk gently with them, to listen, to accompany, and, whenever possible, to help lighten their burdens with love and compassion.

The journey to Easter hope leads us through the sacred days of Good Friday and the quiet waiting of Holy Saturday. In these days ahead, may we remain close to the Lord, as Mary did—steady in faith, patient in hope, and open in love.

May Mary continue to guide us, inspire us, and remind us that even the smallest “Yes” can allow God’s grace to enter the world in powerful ways.

    --- Br. Dan O'Riordan '85, Provincial

The game was action packed from start to finish, with the seniors leading for the majority of the contest. The faculty took their time to get in a groove, falling behind by double digits in the first half. In the second half, however, they shrunk that 10-point lead to just a single point by the final minutes. The Beehive – 1/12/24

Posted On January 12, 2024
January 15th is a day we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and his contributions to the American Civil Rights Movement. A brave, intelligent leader, Dr. King fought for peace, justice, and equality. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Christmas Gift Challenge – THANK YOU!

With gratitude, Molloy is excited to announce that our recent Christmas Gift Challenge raised $190,000 thanks to the kindness and generosity of our amazing community. On behalf of the Marist Brothers, Administration, faculty, staff, and students we serve: THANK YOU!

We have a lot to be grateful for here at Molloy: amazing students, dedicated faculty, impactful service and retreat programs, an abundance of extracurricular activities, championship sports teams, and so much more. In addition, it is through our Needs Based Tuition Assistance program that we can keep Molloy accessible and affordable for so many students, so that they may enjoy such fulfilling experiences. Your generous support of the Fund for Molloy makes all this a reality.

Once again, THANK YOU for your stewardship and commitment to Molloy’s mission. Non scholae sed vitae.

Congratulations and Welcome, Class of 2028!

On behalf of everyone at Archbishop Molloy High School, The Beehive congratulates all of this year’s accepted students! Welcome to the Stanner Family, Class of 2028!

Earlier this week, Molloy shared a personalized congratulatory video and letter with each accepted student vying for a spot in the freshman Class of 2028. Molloy considered over 2,000 outstanding applicants for its 400 available freshman seats. Accepted students represent schools, parishes, and neighborhoods across New York City and Long Island. Molloy is excited to see its newest group of Stanners bring their passions and talents to Manton Street this fall. Before then, there will be a few events along the way that we hope will help our freshman class get further acclimated with their new school. These include our Winter Open House, the Spring Welcome Event, Freshman Camp, and more. We look forward to witnessing each step of this new journey.

Once again, congratulations to all accepted students, and welcome to Molloy!

Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85 Elected to 2nd Term as US Provincial

Congratulations to Br. Dan O’Riordan ’85, who was elected to his second consecutive term as the Marist Brothers’ US Provincial. This three-year term will extend through 2027. Br. Dan was first appointed US Provincial in 2021. In this role, Br. Dan works closely with each Marist school in the United States, providing encouragement and support for ministry leaders. He also coordinates many service projects, works with and supports Marist Brothers throughout the province, and represents the province internationally among the global Marist community. A Stanner Hall of Famer, Br. Dan was once a member of Molloy’s track and field team, a frequent volunteer at Esopus, and previously served as a faculty member at Molloy. Congratulations, Br. Dan!

Lawrence, Massachusetts Service Trip

In December, five Molloy students took part in a service trip to Lawrence, Massachusetts! Over the course of two days, our students provided service at Lazarus House Ministries. They spent time serving and sharing a meal at the family shelter on the first night of the trip. The following day, the group assisted with restocking the food pantry, which serves over 1,500 people weekly. That afternoon was spent serving at the Lazarus House soup kitchen, eventually ending the day by dropping off toys for children on behalf of Project Bethlehem. After two full days of service and reflection, the group celebrated a Christmas prayer service with our friends at Central Catholic High School, a fellow Marist school. Our Stanners expressed gratitude for their experience and for the many blessings they have in their own life.

Special thanks to Erin Gilbert and Marist Brothers Communications for providing this information.

Model UN Club’s “Mini Conference”

Shortly before Christmas break, Molloy’s Model UN Club hosted its first “Mini Conference.” Twenty-five students attended, making up two committees that discussed refugee children and cybersecurity. Typically, our Model UN students travel elsewhere to attend conferences, but this event allowed student leaders Valerie Savage ’24, Daniel Giovanniello ’24, and Moises Bien-Nunag ’25, with guidance from moderator Ms. Hipkin, to plan and chair the discussions. It was also an opportunity for many participants to practice their Model UN skills in a formal setting for the first time! Participants Enda Connolly ’27 and Bryana Quintero ’25 won Best Delegate, Renee-Elizabeth Brown ’26 and Camila Burga-Alcon ’25 won Most Improved, and Laiba Ahmad ’26 and Jules Nohar ’25 won Most Professional.

Senior Duo Represent Molloy in CHSAA Captains Club

Seniors Deirdre O’Toole ’24 and Chris Dalton ’24 are making an impact here at Molloy and around Queens and Brooklyn through the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA). Deirdre and Chris represent Molloy in the CHSAA’s Captains Club, a league-wide group with members from each Catholic high school in Queens and Brooklyn. Club members attend meetings to discuss league policies and make recommendations to help keep the Catholic in the CHSAA. Deirdre is part of the club’s media relations team, while Chris has been working with peers at other schools to draft a formal mission statement for the Captains Club.

Earlier this school year, Deirdre and Chris launched two initiatives that would be celebrated by the CHSAA. First, they introduced a document called Code of Conduct, which outlines standards of fair play, sportsmanship, and respectful competition. Their second initiative was creating a prayer that teams can use prior to games. The Code of Conduct and pre-game prayer were designed as posters and can be printed and hung in gymnasiums around the league. More recently, Deirdre and Chris attended a luncheon sponsored by the CHSAA to honor their contributions and receive some insight from guest speakers and league officials.

At Molloy, Deirdre and Chris are part of the Sports Management Club, which has made great strides in improving Molloy’s ability to promote and report on all of its athletic teams. Club members create promotional flyers and graphics (including the bowling image in the preceding story), write game recaps and athlete spotlights, provide photography and video at games, and contribute frequent content to the wonderful @molloyhs_athletics Instagram account. Deirdre and Chris are leaders in the club and do a great job working with their classmates to get all the exciting sports news out to the public. The Beehive highly encourages readers to click the button below to visit the Instagram page and see their great work in action.

Congratulations Deirdre and Chris and keep up the good work!

Happy 99th Birthday, Coach Lou Carnesecca!

On January 5th, the legendary Lou Carnesecca ’43 celebrated his 99th birthday! Happy Birthday, Coach! When we think about Coach Carnesecca, we think of his participation in St. John’s University’s first College World Series. We think of his service in the U.S. Coast Guard (Pacific Theatre Operations) during World War II, and his coaching career at St. Ann’s Academy and Molloy. At Molloy, Coach Carnesecca helped lead the Stanners to an undefeated City Champion season in 1957-58 before passing the baton to Jack Curran the following season. We think of the incredible story Coach Carnesecca authored at St. John’s University both as a player and later as a long-time head coach. Once considered “Basketball’s Ambassador to the World,” Coach Carnesecca’s incredible legacy continues to inspire the Molloy and SJU families.

Inaugural Alumni Pickleball Night!

Friday, January 5th marked a new opportunity for Molloy Alumni to get together. “Pickleball has been a great new way for people to focus on fitness, healthy competition, and community building. Now, we hope to bring that same energy to Molloy,” said President Richard Karsten ’81. A few alumni, faculty, staff, and family members have already gathered to play, but there there will soon be more formal opportunities for everyone in our community to sign up. As the program rolls out, there will be opportunities for participants to learn, compete, and have fun playing pickleball here at Molloy. Alumnus and former School Board Member Robert Wu ‘72 will help to lead the charge. Mr. Wu is a certified instructor and official USA Pickleball Ambassador. Look out for upcoming announcements soon!

Alumni Gather for Two Sports Reunions

Molloy is excited to share two sports reunions that took place in the last two weeks! First, on Friday, December 29th, former members of the varsity swim teams joined in the fun of the current team’s annual Relay Carnival 🏊🏼‍♀️. Every year during Christmas break practice, the team competes in wacky relays. Our alumni took first place in the competition! Pictured with the swim team from left to right in the front row: Rebecca Wagner ‘14 (current coach), Kaleigh Gilroy ‘18, Casey Gilroy ‘21, Madison Capria ‘21, Thomas Anich ‘21, Max Ortof ‘22, Mark Haynes ‘23, Abby Man ‘23, Emma Wresch ‘20, Brianne Rosa ‘08, and Dylan Haynes ‘16.

Molloy was also happy to welcome our alumnae back for a special Girls Basketball Reunion on January 3rd! 🏀 Our alumnae cheered on as Molloy’s girls basketball teams faced off against Nazareth High School. It was great to see everyone!

Recent Alumna Visits Linguistics Class

Alumna Autumn Hill ‘22 recently visited Dr. Jonathan Mangar ‘09 and his introductory linguistics class to speak about the importance and usefulness of studying linguistics. Autumn took the linguistics course, titled “Language, the World, and Us,” when it was first offered in the spring of her senior year at Molloy. She is now a sophomore at St. John’s University studying Speech Pathology and Audiology. Autumn enthusiastically introduced Dr. Mangar’s students to these areas of study and spoke about her involvement with clubs and jobs on campus.

“I had so much fun providing high school juniors and seniors with valuable information that they can continue to use in the classroom and the real world,” said Autumn. “I also loved getting to know all the students and hearing about their future endeavors.” Thank you, Autumn, for taking the time to visit and speak to our current students!

Virtual Enterprise Welcomes Alumni Speakers

Back in December, Molloy’s Virtual Enterprise classes welcomed real estate broker Eric Berman. Eric spoke to our senior entrepreneurs about the client experience, sharing real-world stories about how to interact with and engage customers. Topics included cultivating relationships, the ever-changing market, being thoughtful and intentional during client interactions, and more. Molloy alumni JP Mussalli ‘22 and Anik Amin ’22 also returned to contribute to the presentation. Thank you, Mr. Touzin, for organizing this workshop for our students!

Alumnus Receives Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

PRESS RELEASE – Winter Park, Fla. (December 11, 2023) – Rollins College senior Andrew Persaud (AMHS Class of 2020) has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship. Molloy is saddened to share the passing of Stanner Hall of Famer Clarence Davis ’59. Clarence was an exceptional basketball player at Molloy and was part of its undefeated 1957-58 varsity team, playing under Coach Lou Carnesecca ’43. After graduating from Molloy, he enlisted in the US Marine Corp, serving for six years before leaving to attend Long Island University on a basketball scholarship. He earned a degree in accounting and later worked as a Certified Public Accountant. Clarence had a wonderful career, becoming one of the first African Americans to be a partner in a major accounting firm, Oppenheim, Appel and Dixon. He later opened his own consulting firm, Clarence Davis Enterprises, through which he served businesses ranging from television studios and sod farms to the American Red Cross. In the late 1980s, Clarence generously supported Molloy as the Ralph DeChiaro Center for the Arts was first constructed. Today, this extension houses Molloy’s Chemistry Lab, Biology Lab, and Theater. Clarence’s name resides on a plaque on the front of Molloy’s stage as an acknowledgment of his kindness and generosity. Please join Molloy in praying for Clarence and his loved ones. | Click Here for More Information
